  1. That Juma Sultan archive site is very interesting. Watching a clip of Hendrix playing the Monday morning gig at Woodstock on the TV yesterday, noticed that he is in the line-up as one of the 2 percusionists and is interviewed on the programme. My first reaction on seeing this was 'that must be Juma Santos of Bitches Brew fame' and this thread put me right. From wiki it would appear that Juma Santos passed away some years ago though from complications of malaria. Only 59.

  3. My opinion from reading the UK paperback imprint back in 1975/76 - hope the sleezy bits were fiction and not for real ! Having said that - an amazing book. Not one to leave around on your coffee table..
  4. Gil Evans Orchestra in 1978 at Bristol Colston Hall due to snow drifts affecting all roads. Finally got to see him about 5 years later.
  5. I thought I was on the Hoffman Forums for a minute when I read that..
  6. The beauty of vinyl is that one does not need to be constantly upgrading.
  7. Hank Mobley 'A Caddy For Daddy' (BN NY USA, stereo)
  8. On Spotify then presumably? Thanks, I'll check it out.
  9. Wow, truly dreadful cover! Love the music inside, though. Worth buying just for the cover (a 'Rainbow; series classic). Excellent music !
  10. Gene Krupa/Harry James Capitol Set. Disk 7 - Harry James plays Ernie Wilkins arrangements.
  11. Agree that the Jazz Crusaders is a really good one. Looks like I need to get the Herman set for sure and likely also the Hackett. Thought I had it but it turns out I hadn't ( ). Any thoughts on the Bobby Hackett?
  12. Recorded evidence from the UK confirms that he was playing in fine form in the 'Up at Mintons' style up to at least 2 years before his passing. Highly under-rated in later years IMO.
  13. Philip Larkin? Jim Godbolt? For me - I guess Chick Corea comes in to this category. After the first ECM Return To Forever LP. Having said that, I've enjoyed him live in the times I've seen him over the years but the CDs/LPs have left me a bit cold.. Also Blue Mitchell after 'Boss Horn' (although 'Mapenzi' was a return to form).
  14. That's where I saw him and he popped up all the time - very versatile. Didn't he start out on mellophonium in the Kenton band?
  15. William the B**tard John Major Terry Major-Balls
  16. No, I'm alergic to X-Factor and party political broadcasts of all persuasions..
  17. Why the h*ll we always have depressing Scandinavian dramas this time of the year beats me. What we need in this weather is some corrupt cop drama set on the beach in Rio in the middle of Carnival season... Didn't know Paul Morley did Scandi detective acting..

    Terry Smith

I've got a copy of that Terry Smith/Tony Lee Trio LP. It was put out on the tiny Lee-Lambert label, don't think it has been reissued on CD (although Vocalion have reissued some of the Lee-Lamberts, including the Martin Drew). The rare 'Fallout' LP on Philips was also reissued on CD by Sunbeam. Should still be available.
  20. Some big hailstones in the Somerset area yesterday. I saw that storm from a distance and have never seen a day-time sky so dark, with the exception of a near-total eclipse. Not a good day to be standing on the Cobb at Lyme Regis either !
