  1. Really shocked by this news - yes John, terrible sums it up. I saw him less than 2 weeks ago at Swanage, playing superbly as per usual in Peter King's Quartet (must have been his last gig I guess). My impression at the time was that he looked fine (Peter made some quip about him taking forever to set up his kit - but that was the mark of the technical perfectionist/master) - his playing if anything was even better than the previous time I'd seen him at Swanage and was typically precise and very driving (they played Chick Corea's 'Inner Space' to start things off, at a cracking pace). It was stated by the festival host in the intro that he was the 'best time player in the UK' and there were no arguments whatsoever with that statement - spot on. First time I saw him was in the late 70s in the Ronnie Scott Quintet, at Scotts, along with Dick Pierce, John Critchenson and Ron Mathewson. Saw that group quite a few times at the club. RIP and my sympathies to his family - and many thanks for some great playing over the years.

  5. Last time I was at Ray's jazz in Foyles Bookstore they had the box in the glass case at the back of the sales desk. Couldn't check out the price though. I was hoping they might have had the Patton instead !

  8. I'm quite fond of that pressing - with its Sonny Lester reverb and Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve !
  9. Last time I hade some of the real stuff I think was at Ferranti Systems, Bracknell, back circa 1981. They were trying to attract new Elec Eng graduates. Now long since sold up/hived off/liquidated !

  13. Great set to start on. Could be the start of an expensive but excellent habit !
  14. And for this box set, I can't find The Complete On The Corner Sessions at a decent price, I didn't even see one at Amoeba's yesterday. I'm tempted to do a Amazon download for $40.00, though I would much prefer the real box -- I'm old and cranky, and don't like this new fangled computer stuff. You also get the new artwork from Corky McCoy with Miles as a goat-hooved devil playing the tambourine. Unmissable ! :rsmile:

  16. Would you recommend this box set Brownie? (for a Cecil 'moderate' who likes his Blue Note sessions but listens to the free-er stuff in small doses ). I would not recommend it to anybody who is hesitant on Cecil Taylor. These are 10 CDs of often abrupt music. I personally am an immoderate fan and love these performances! Thanks. I'll see if I can check out some samples.

  23. I think ANSL77 is seeking some of these.
  24. I've seen them in the shops and I may well be tempted by the Lockjaw, Hawkins and the Byrd. Usually not keen on these Lonehill-type issues though.
