  1. Just listening to 'Extensions' the other day and that one is a killer which has withstood the test of time superbly - and IMO one of the best albums ever recorded on ECM. Kevin Eubanks and 'Smitty' Smith are 'magic ingredient X' on it, for sure. I had the priviledge back in the day of witnessing a performance by this band whilst stood at the back of the stage right behind Eubanks and it brings back real good memories. The Dave Holland Quintet performance at the Bath Festival a couple of years ago was pretty damn good too. Played to a packed house and got a great reception (for Bath).

  3. Yes, it looks as if they are now filling the 'Appleby' slot of old. It's been running for a fair while though - 21 years this year.
  4. Ah - the FOPP Covent Garden. That's the one on Shaftesbury Avenue isn't it? Picked up a copy of the ECM tome by Steve Lake there only last week for £10. Reduced from £45.
  5. I too am sorry to hear of Frank's poor health and wish him luck with this. He sure has given a lot to jazz !
  6. No surprise. Paul, the octopus, is skyrocketed to No 2, just after the Spain. Overall, he will be the next CEO of FIFA, a huge leap forward after Blatter. A totally useless creature, Sepp, put him in a zoo, next to the monkey cage..and BTW don't feed the animal. Can't agree more ! I'll bet the expat octopus has done big things for the balance of trade in Oberhausen. Great marketing by the Burgermeisters !

  8. Fopp is great for £3 to £5 specials. Really miss the Bath store, where you could pick up much of the Blue Note/Capitol catalogue and CBS/Sony stuff for £5. Got some truly great deals there. At least the Bristol store up by the University is still operating and doing the £3 deals. Not quite as accessible for me though.
  9. If only we'd been blessed with a Peter King visit! Swanage is definitely worth checking out this year. The ubiquitous Alan Barnes as usual (premiering his 'Swanage Suite') plus interesting performers such as Back Door Too, Jim Hart Quartet, Keith Nichols, Liam Noble, Denys Baptiste, John Law, Gilad Atzmon, Dave Stapleton and Tina May - as well as Stan and Peter. A veritable cornucopia of UK jazz and right by the seaside too ! Looks like it's pretty well sold out: Swanage Jazz
  10. Meanwhile, in the wacky world of FIFA rankings, England moves up to No. 7. Words fail me !

  12. Stan's playing twice at Swanage - with his Octet and trio. There's also Peter King with his Quartet, so some real good stuff on down there.
  13. Gladys Fred Signor Tamponini
  14. I'll be hopefully seeing Mark Nightingale in performance with Stan Tracey's Octet this weekend at Swanage.
  15. Yeah, but hardly anyone else played such a bad WC... There was no worse team than France I can think of one...
  16. Anyone picked up a copy of that new 'We Want Miles' book ? - seems to have been published in French as part of the Paris exhibition, now in an English imprint. About 35 euros - saw a copy at the weekend. Looks to have details of much of the memorabilia on show in Paris - although the copy I saw was sealed so couldn't check it out.

  18. What a pain !
  19. No kidding ... I switched over to 'Top Gear' A legend in his own lifetime - and top performing Brit at the World Cup.
  20. Wasn't that one of the sets affected by the Mosaic 'disaster'? In which case, a lot less than 5000 probably sold. I'm sure there must be a few on here who have the set, even so.

  22. Happy Birthday. Sounds like a great way to spend it !
