  1. A gem !
  2. Saw him 'in action' back in 1999-ish. Conducting a jazz ensemble with strings playing some of his arrangements. Think I might even have photos of it somewhere.
  3. Yes, it was very good. I'd always thought she was extra-ordinary but from what I heard on the show she deserved a medal or three. An outstanding individual. Didn't realise that Monk was so ill in that last decade either. I remember him going low-profile and retreating to the room but the severity of the illness was kept quiet. First time I heard also that he got electric shock treatment in the late 60s in San Fran and that the doc who was on hand when he was brought in was Eddie Henderson ! The Monk 'Jazz 625' was pretty nice too - good to see that group with Rouse, Gales and Riley in action. As for future stuff - sadly there don't seem to be any more 'Jazz 625s' on the listings for next week.
  4. Sorry to hear it. Aggie's advice on the scotch was good - I'd be shaking in that situation too. All the best !
  5. The Vertigo spaceship label pressings are fine - I have 'Alleycat' in that one and it sounds great. Now, at last, spinning Ric Colbeck 'The Sun Is Coming Up' (Fontana, stereo).
  6. Got my copy signed by Kirk Lightsey a few months ago. He mentioned that both he and Roy Brooks ended up high-tailing it backwards and forwards that week from Atlantic City (where they had a gig that week) and Mr Carpenter apparently treated them OK.
  7. Happy Borthday, your oldness
  8. I think that one came originally with a 'swirl' but still - good find.
  9. Noddy Big Ears Mr Plod
  10. Yeah, it's so good that I'm going to give myself a repeat showing tonight. Just wished they'd included the whole of the 'San Francisco Arts 1968' show - but I guess most of the tracks are included (30 minute show?) It would also have been nice to see the whole of that Bernstein/Schuller symphonic performance. Apparently Eric Dolphy was in the lineup !
  11. Read the label ... Yeah, I did, of course. It's just that when I see Roulette I think 'Teddy Reig' anyway - back to the late Ms C..
  12. Good move - I'm sure you'll enjoy it. First thing I did after watching it was put on the CD of 'Electric Bath' and crank the volume up.
  13. Flash Gordon Babs Gonsales Babs Windsor
  14. Roulette? A Teddy Reig production? Egads..
  15. Verdict - definitely a thumbs up. Especially so for any of us Don Ellis fans. The main feature is a well made and balanced documentary with some very nice and rare film footage. Ellis with Leonard Bernstein and symphonic orchestra in NYC in one of the Third Stream concerts (Orchestra USA? - also in film - Benny Golson and Richard Davis). Some nice semi-psychedelic tracks from a 1968 San Francisco arts TV show around the time of the 'Shock Treatment' LP and also footage from the 'Underground' tour taken at Tanglewood, with vocalist Patti Allen. Sadly, no footage of the 'Tears Of Joy' band, although some nice 35mm slides of this band touring are shown in the documentary. The special features include a truly wild version of 'Turkish Bath' taken from that 68 San Fran show, more interview footage from Milcho Leviev and others and a nice little performance by an Ellis Alumni band filmed at 'Whisky A Go Go' in LA back in 2005 led by Leviev and playing 'Pussy Wiggle Stomp' and 'Indian Lady'. A nice tribute DVD !
  16. Hope all goes well with this - good luck and best wishes.
  17. Where is it available? My local jazz CD specialist shop had one copy on the shelf. Looked intriguing so I went for it. Must have been a special import for it to hit the shelf over here. Update - click on link on the first post. Amazon UK seem to be selling it for about £15.60
  18. Am I allowed to say that I really like that session?
  19. Just picked up the DVD of this (apparently 220 minutes, with special features). Will post thoughts once I've viewed it.
