  1. Gearing up for Pat Martino this week with: 'East !' (Prestige, purple label stereo) 'El Hombre' (Prestige blue label, stereo)
  2. Yeah, I remember that one at 'The Pavillion'. Had a ring-side seat for it. Is that the concert where you mentioned you set fire to your book?
  3. 42/- was £2.10 at a time when a student paid £3.50 for a week's accommodation with meals and could live comfortably for a ten-week term on a grant of £60. Pretty pricey for a record! No kidding ! So the £100 original Blue Notes of today are cheap then.
  4. I'm half-tempted to check out that gig in Stroud on Sunday. I'll be passing through the place numerous times over the next few days to get to Cheltenham so one more trip probably won't go amis. If I'm not already exhausted by then, that is.

    Eric Dolphy

There's quite an interesting documentary produced of this session, with original film footage of the sessions and interviews with Bennick, Mengelberg etc. 'Eric Dolphy - Last Date'. Put out by Rhapsody Films I think. (Ah - I see you've mentioned it in your last sentence).
  7. They have a duo gig coming up in the Gloucestershire area (home turf) in the very near future - not part of the Cheltenham Jazz Festival but same timeframe. According to 'Jazzwise' it's on at the 'Subscription Rooms' in Stroud on the 3rd May.
  8. I've got the feeling my 'Gene Norman Presents' of Frank Morgan is on UK Vogue. Will have to dig it out (if I can find it).
  9. Yep, the 70's Prestige twofer 'Green Haze' mentions this in the sleeve notes, I think.
  10. My copy of the Parker/Gillespie/Powell 'Massey Hall Concert' is on the UK Vogue 12" imprint. The one with the infamous pack of cards on the cover. Considering that it is over 50 years old now, it is still in amazing nick. Another favourite on UK Vogue is the Art Pepper 'Plus 11 Plays Jazz Standards'. Excellent sounding disk. Similarly, another very good sounding one is the Lyle 'Spud' Murphy.
  11. Sun Ra Arkestra 'Sun Song' (Delmark mono)
  12. Al Aarons Snookie Young Wendell Culley
  13. Home-made Chicken Madras curry with hot chilli peppers, basmati rice, lime pickle and naan bread Sticky Chocolate sponge pudding and cream for desert and a pint or two of Old Speckled Hen !
  14. Freddie Hubbard 'The Atlantic Years - The Art Of Freddie Hubbard' (Atlantic 2LPs, US) Charles Mingus 'The Atlantic years - The Art Of Charles Mingus' (Atlantic 2LPs, UK)
  15. Dual A-side EP with 'Eat That Chicken'?
  16. A few late night long distance drives coming up on Friday night then. Thursday is also no better for me, with the Pat Martino film do. Flask of coffee for the car methinks !
  17. Not a great fan of this label. Invariably noisy vinyl and the cover art must have cost 3 1/2 p to put together back in the day ! Having said that, they got some rare stuff out (Booker Little, Herbie Nichols Bethlehem etc) back in our last depression so maybe it's time to resurrect this label !
  18. That's my experience too. The Charity Shops are usually well and truly cleaned out by the 'crate digger' brigade (they even collect the 'TOTP' albums ). Some of the bigger Oxfam shops, especially the ones in the wealthy areas, filter out their collectable vinyl (e.g. Rendell/Carr) and have lists of the rare stuff that you can peruse. They use book value though so there are absolutely no bargains to be had. Having said that, it's a good way of donating to charity.
  19. Remmington Steele Victor Kiam El Viktor
  20. Good move. I've been very pleased with my VPI. Try using it with 'L'Art du Son' record cleaning fluid from Germany - gives impressive results.
  21. Many of the Pacific Jazz sessions were issued in the UK on Vogue. Initially on 10" put later on the 12" format (with a lime coloured label). They are usualy pretty nice pressings (assuming they haven't been trashed by use of a heavy cartridge/record changer).
  22. It's very late in the day but I finally picked up the Sue Mingus 2CD reissue of the 'UCLA' concert at Royce Hall. I have to say that the CD issue in this case works much better for me than the LPs and having to change the side over after 10 minutes or so of Mingus chat. The music (especially Hobart Dotson) is of course spectacular. The Mingus cartoon strip in the notes reproduced from 'Village Voice' is a hoot too. Message to Mr Brownie - did you cut out the coupon and send it in to Mingus with a PO for your LPs?
  23. Chico Hamilton 'El Chico' (Speakers Corner)
  24. Ainsley Harriott (are they related?) Gordoon Ramsay Anthony Worrell-Thompson
