Just spinning Disk 5 of the Stanley T. Mosaic box, what a great session this is. Stanley's version of 'Stella By Starlight' is exceptional. You get a very tangible impression listening to this album that the classic era at Blue Note was coming to an end and albums such as this would soon be no more. Of course, Thad Jones was also on a major roll back in the late 60s. Very consistent.

Excellent session with Andrew Hill and Jim Hall. Strange how this one passed me by in the past, especially with Andrew on board.

There's also a pretty nice video recorded in Germany from Shaw's latter years recorded for TV in Koln I think (Subway) which features him with Johnny Griffin. I have the feeling they play 'Star Eyes' on that one too.

Nathan Davis 'Peace Treaty' (SFP)

We get that in about 5 minutes on a 'dry' day.. Case in point - torrential stuff pouring down over Bristol last night on the flight back in. Continental Europe was - of course - completely dry.

My attention in the Cheltenham booklet was drawn to: "Martino Unplugged' (Pittville Campus, University of Gloucestershire (they have one?), 7.30pm 30th April. Free - ticket required). 'In Ian Knox's fascinating film 'Martino Unstrung' Neuropsychologist and Author Paul Broks travels America in search of the soul of legendary jazz guitarist Pat Martino who was brutally silenced by memory stripping brain surgery. They join us for a screening, followed by a Q&A session.' " I'm going to try to combine that one with the Martino/Arguelles double-bill on Friday (that one also has John Abercrombie) and try to get to the Henry Grimes/Dunmall/Cyrille on Saturday. Some good stuff coming up. Not checked out the Bath lineup yet but I'll likely go for the Dave Holland.

Checked out 'The Collector' - touristy hype place in the Bourse area, way overpriced and condition of many of the LPs not so great. And much of this stuff not at all rare either (they seemed to have lots of Prestige blue labels, Riverside/Milestones etc). Joke prices e.g. 25 euros for some of the Pathe Marconi DMMs e.g. Horace Parlan and 35 euros for run-of-mill Japanese Toshibas. There was a Belgian guy next to me frantically snapping stuff up like there was no tomorrow. As for me, I didn't buy a thing. I was wondering if we were in the same shop? 'Discosold' was quite a nice place for CDs and had one Verve Elite Edition CD that I could see (Quinichette) and a Dexter Blue Note box for 75 euros. Still pricey though - better for CDs and the vinyl generally sucked. My conclusion - when in Brussels save the jazz dollar and spend it on food and beer instead. Looks like I'm off to Munich in about 3 weeks though so things may be better there..

When I started buying it around 1974, it was literally the only monthly jazz periodical that could be tracked down to purchase here in the UK (and even then it was difficult to find in the shops - I had to order via my newsagent). Needless to say it was eagerly awaited every month, almost like a Tablet of Stone from Mt Olympus. Jazz Monthly had ceased to be some years before and I don't think I ever saw an import copy of DownBeat. So - much credit to Jazz Journal for providing me with lots of information during those early years.
