  4. Should be a good chance that this one will show up in Europe as a 'Euro-Mosaic' I would think ('OP's Complete Verve/Clef Concert Band Recordings' )

  6. Yes indeed! I didn't know that he was under-rated in Britain. In the US, his name is unknown. Very much so ! He does the occasional gig but rarely features here in the jazz press, unfortunately. That particular Philips LP is a classic though and remains something of a 'cult item'. Very much a straight-ahead session but tastefully done, with a mixture of small group tracks (in a Kenny Burrell vein) and Harry South arranged big-band charts. The influence of Scott Walker is quite prominent throughout too, in the general 'vibe'.

  8. Didn't the lineup for 'If' include that excellent and under-rated guitarist Terry Smith? This album of his is very highly recommended - Scott Walker production recorded for Philips:
  9. Get right on over to the Music Matters site and correct that problem with a 2x45 rpm. Sorted !

  14. Here in the US, Morrisey was best known as the leader of If, which many felt was the best jazz-rock band of the late 60s-early 70s. I had the pleasure of meeting him twice. Very nice guy. Yes, I've heard from people who knew him that he was a very nice guy. The nearest I got was circa 1980 when working over a college vacation at research centre in a small coastal resort town. Morrissey/Mullen were playing a gig at the local dance hall and somehow I damn well missed it. At the time their soul/R&B releases got quite a popular following.
  15. I remember seeing it about 25 or so years ago at a London art-house cinema who were screening jazz movies as part of a season. Very lo-fi and the print was lousy but entertaining, nevertheless ! Yep, quite a lot of comedy interludes in it, as I recall.
  16. Have a great one !

  18. Some very good arranging work from Graham Collier for 4 horns on his 1960s Deram albums which I particularly like - 'Deep Dark Blue Centre', 'Mosaics' and 'Songs For My Father'. Post bop with almost a 'film noir' mood influence. Gotta mention the Don Grolnick Blue Notes for quality of arranging for the bigger group too.
  19. Sadly - no. Still looking for an (affordable) vinyl !

  21. Yep, my Pathe Macaroni LP was one of these. Subsequently signed by Sam on the front ! The session was also included in that excellent 'Involutions' twofer in the BN 'brown bag' reissue series.
  22. A big favourite is the 'Another Story' session with Thad Jones. A real low-key gem, that one..
  23. It's a problem shared with the UK too. Some improvement over the past few years though on these lead-times (there ought to be, considering the billions poured in by Brown ). I wonder if waiting times in the Edmonton area have been adversely impacted by the big influx of people into Alberta in the last 5 years or so? As I remember it, there didn't seem to be too much of a problem with places like the Royal Alex.
