  1. Just checked my copy of this one, which I think is a stereo original. Laminated sleeve with 'Product of Am-Par' on the back, ABC-Paramount liner and the orange/black '4 logos'. Looks like glossy labels. Good excuse to give it a spin ! Woops - sorry, I'm thinking of Impulse A-1. 'Jai and Kai'.
  2. Likewise, John. A pretty astonishing deal, considering it's from HMV. I was in one of their branches today and they were asking £61 for the Miles 'On The Corner' set, would you believe !

  5. Fabulous deal on the box coming up from HMV UK: Ayler Box
  6. It seems to depend a lot on the speakers. The ones I have are best at a straight right angle to the wall but there are some which benefit as you say from a degree or so of 'toeing in'. Setting them up level on the stands also makes a difference in terms of soundstage/focus.
  7. Hi Dan - Jimmy Smith Mosaic has arrived in record US to UK delivery time, in great shape and beautifully packaged. Many thanks and hope things sort out for you real soon.
  8. Really? What don't you like about it, jazzbo?
  9. Harry Beckett 'Flare Up' (UK Philips, stereo). Great session from the early '70s with John Taylor, Mike Osborne, John Surman etc.
  10. I think the first time I saw George at Ronnie Scotts was either just before or just after that 'Amsterdam After Dark' LP was cut - the quartet played most of those tunes. Pretty memorable it was too - George's circular breathing was astonishing. Either the next time or time-but-one he was at Scotts it was with the Octet (Frank Strozier, Danny Moore, Mario Riviera etc). They cut a disk that week on Ronnie's own label - not sure if it was the 'Big George'.

  13. I think the story was that he had at least some of his teeth knocked out in the late 60s - and getting the embrochure back was a real challenge. Must have been around the time of the 'Taru' session. That Fresh Sound Baltimore track is just great - must get hold of that CD.
  14. A good one. I found my copy of that gen in a discount sale too - also in excellent condition. As the great Sun Ra once said when he saw this box set in a shop window - 'He wasn't frustrated at all !!

  18. A lot of them are a bit like that. Almost as if there was some excessive filtering of the recordings, especially at the top end. They always seemed to sound better to me on cassette !

  23. Yes, the matching is crucial. Superline is only OK with MC cartridges and matches very well with the top Dynavectors/Aro (unlike Stageline 'S' for example) using just the resistive plugs. I believe 'special' plug 453® is the one to go for. Cartridges like Akiva seem to like some capacitance. You get a bag of standard resistive and capacitive plugs to match with your setup but in my case the 'special' will be required to optimally load, although 500® works pretty well.
