  1. When I saw Humph's band around 1978 I think they were back in the lineup, along with Kathy Stobart. A fine front-line !
  2. Amazing how elusive that one is. Only ever saw one copy come up - and that had the cover bent !
  3. Yep, they are good. I have seen both with their separate lineups - Bollani as a solo artist at Bath a few years ago and then Rava with his quartet at Cheltenham a year or so later. Enjoyed both so - as you say - should be good.
  4. Hi DrJ - Nice to see you back on the site. I'm interested - mail on its way.
  5. Chico Hamilton 'The Further Adventures of El Chico' (UK Impilse silver/black mono). One of the few examples of 60s UK Impulse.
  6. 'King Pleasure Sings, Annie Ross Sings' (Prestige Bergenfield DG mono). Another great-sounding Prestige LP !
  7. I like this one ! Teddy Charles on Atlantic are very interesting ! And the earlier "Tentet" is fine, too. Yep, totally agree. I have the 'Tentet' on black label Atlantic too, will dig it out a bit later. Very cool cover on that one !
  8. Looks like these guys will be playing the Cheltenham Fest this year in the UK. Should be good.
  9. Teddy Charles 'Word From Bird' (Atlantic black label DG mono)
  10. All my sets have arrived from Newbury (in a large blue sack ). Bill Evans 'Last Waltz' (at long last), Pepper 'Vanguard' and the spare of the Henderson. All sealed and pristine apart from neat black marker through bar-code. One happy camper !
  11. Peter A posted the list on previous page: "The Al Grey albums on Argo are also great fun (often with Billy Mitchell, Bobby Hutcherson and Dave Burns): LPS 653: The Last Of The Big Plungers (1959) LPS 677: The Thinking Man's Trombone (1961) LPS 689: The Al Grey-Billy Mitchell Sextet (1961) LPS 700: Snap Your Fingers (1962) LPS 711: Night Song (1962) LPS 718: Having A Ball (1963) LPS 731: Boss Bone (1964)" The only time I ever saw Al Grey live was as part of a Dizzy Gillespie 'Reunion' big band for a 1-day fest. The 'bone' lineup also included Jimmy Clevelend, Slide Hampton I think and Melba Liston (sadly not playing) was guest of honour. Trumpets included John Faddis, Bobby Bryant and Art Farmer. The saxes included Jimmy Heath. I remember Grey doing at least one vocal spot and he was prominently featured on solo trombone.
  12. With regard to George Melly TV programmes, my favourite of his was that one from a few years back called 'Jazz Dives' where he goes round the country in an old van checking out places he played or stayed at back in the 1950s on his tours of that time. Much is no longer standing but some interesting 'cellars' were uncovered. Soho and Manchester seem to feature prominently. By that time George already had his eye-patch but his humour was very much compus-mentis.
  13. Also cartoonist - wasn't it he and Wally Fawkes who were the original Trog? MG I think you're right !
  14. Love it, big Prestige sound for a big tenor session. Yeh, you've nailed it porcy. Lovely big sound on this one. My favourite Ammons !
  15. Fascinating ! BBC have just repeated the documentary 'George Melly's Last Stand', about his final struggle with cancer and dementia, even filming through to the last few days. A totally unique character - musician, music/food critic, angler and general all-round bon-vivant. His last gig was at 100 Club, 100 Oxford Street, not very long before he died.
  16. 'Artie Shaw & His Gramercy Five' (Clef, mono)
  17. Gene Ammons 'Jug' (Prestige Bergenfield DG mono)
  18. That's good news - I want to check this one out. I see that the second RCA Neon album 'Brotherhood' is out now on CD too.
  19. Great set - I'm pretty sure you won't regret it.
  20. Miles Davis '65-68' LP set. LP10 - 'Filles' sessions.
  21. A good example also is his recording 'Tangence' - recorded with Robert Farnon and Orchestra. To my mind, one of Johnson's most emotional recordings.
