  1. Very Happy Birthday !
  2. Hmm - how did this get from Mosaic to steam trains?
  3. And got your recommended minimum exercise requirement by having to get up every 10 minutes.
  4. Lou Donaldson/3 Sounds 'LD + 3' (Music Matters stereo 2LP 45rpm)
  5. Got it. Nice to know my schoolboy French wasn't wasted !
  6. Great programme - series 2-4 are some of the funniest TV ever. Series 1 has its moments too - although it is a bit 'darker'. Highly recommended !
  7. At the time I had pretty well switched to the new fangled CDs so didn't see the point - I was hoping they did CDs. What a moron !
  8. It was at the O'Keefe Centre - quite a big venue. As part of the Toronto Jazz Festival. John Gilmore and June Tyson were still in the band (Gilmore looked a bit winded at times) but Sun Ra looked (and played) pretty good. Sticking mainly to piano. The Horseshoe Tavern was not in existence I think during my time in that city - I recall that the 'Top O' The Senator' and 'Bermuda Onion' were the main clubs (both now long gone) and the 'Cafe des Copains' did excellent shows mainly with solo piano/duo acts. The Senator and Bemuda Onion got some really great US groups in - often their first destination after NYC as part of American tours. Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Joe Henderson, Red Rodney, Louis Hayes (with Charles Tolliver), Mongo Santamaria, Pharoah Sanders and Elvin Jones come to mind (caught all of these ). At the 'Cafe' I remember seeing John Lewis, Pat LaBarbara, Cedar Walton, Sir Charles Thompson, Jay McShann and Joanne Brackeen. Still kicking myself all those years later for not buying a box full of LPs at that Ra gig.
  9. British label, mainly Classical, that did some very good modern jazz (Michael Garrick, Norma Winstone etc). Part of the Decca group.
  10. Mole put it out as a bootleg, along with the Surman album that became Way Back When. They were available some years ago at about $100 a pop. What the heck is '+/- 10 copies'? Does that mean these are anti-matter versions? Can't say I ever recall the guys at Mole shiftily handing over packages from under the counter in brown paper bags.
  11. Yes - I use a Dynavector moving coil. I recommend the Dynavectors - the moving magnets are also recommended, and work out good value considering performance/price.
  12. Same here. First time particularly memorable, in Toronto. It seemed to go on for an eternity - but was brilliant. Middle bit had Ra on solo piano playing Fletchers Henderson. There were also quite a few Disney numbers with vocals, which caused a lot of audience mirth. The whole orchestra put 300% in. The second occasion was about 6 months later in Boston - not quite so good.
  13. Mulligan/Monk 'Mulligan Meets Monk' (Riverside DG mono)
  14. Art Pepper 'Complete Village Vanguard' set, CD1. So nice to have all of the music from this 3-day engagement on one set. Good audio quality too ! I see from above posts that about half of the board membership took advantage of the Newbury deal.
  15. Can't believe I didn't get the Blue Mitchell. I've got a copy of the original LP. DOH !! That Gene Krupa Plays Mulligan was a pleasant suprise. Will definitely check that one out.
  16. Geez ! Some people have all the luck..
  17. Can't forget either 3 gigs by Miles in the 80s/90s. Hammersmith Odeon in 1982, Royal Festival Hall in 1985 and Massey Hall Toronto 1990. The last was particularly good (front row seat ).
  18. It's posts like this that make me wish I was 10+ years older ! Sadly I never did get to see Horace at Ronnies - somehow I always seemed to miss that one, although he used to do annual residencies in the 70s I think. Another great player I saw for the first time at Ronnies and have subsequently caught quite a few times since is George Coleman. First time I saw him (in fact my very first visit to Scotts) he had Hilton Ruiz, Herbie Lewis and Billy Higgins in his group. A lovely evening that was. A year or two later I caught his Octet there with Frank Strozier, Harold Mabern (I think) and Danny Moore. As for Billy H - he seemed to be at Scotts semi-permanently, with various groups by Coleman and Cedar Walton around that time. A great spirit ! Gil Evans British Orchestra was another memorable one I saw there - never thought I'd ever see that.
  19. Go for it !
  20. Bobby Timmons 'Sweet and Soulful Sounds' (UK Riverside mono)
  21. It'll probably win.. Eurovision Sng Contest
  22. Don't have any photos but in the back garden this morning the wrens were making an absolute racket ! Amazing amount of noise for something hardly bigger than a moth. Badgers turfing up my lawn looking for worms - usually also a sign that the tail-end of Winter is nigh and Spring is round the corner.
