How do you compare this pressing with the Mosaic? Interesting question - I'll report back later . In general I find that the 2-eyes have slight edge sonically, although they are noisier than Mosaic. I think I haven't got any 2-eyes around here, not sure. Much of later '360 stereo' instead, mostly rock, usually excellent sound. I'm lucky I guess in that I have all of those Miles late-60s albums in the 2-eyes versions. No mention of '360 stereo' that I recall. Got them as a near-mint batch at a great price. Pretty well all of the Monks too. Just playing the Mosaic '65-68' of 'Tout de Suite' and 'Filles'. I have to say that it sounds really good. There's not much to choose between them. The original LP has the bigger, broader soundstage I guess but the Mosaic has precision and detail. Both excellent ! The UK CBS Miles from this period are also consistently good. The 'Quiet Nights' UK mono is my favourite of that title.

Miles Davis 'Filles De Kilimanjaro' (CBS 2-Eye Stereo). More Teo Macero production.
-
Woody Herman 'Jazz Hoot' (UK CBS stereo). A fine production by the late Teo Macero.
-
Lonnie Smith 'Turning Point' (BN Liberty, stereo) Milt Jackson 'Invitation' (Riverside original mono)

Somewhere I've got what looks to be a private issue LP by Al Grey with Jimmy Forrest from the 1970s signed by both of them. It's a live performance - will have to dig it out. From what I recall of seeing Mr Grey live around 10 or so years ago he was a great showman and certainly knew how to work up a crowd !

All remaining Miles LP sets riding off into the sunset

The awesome '65-68' set now moves into 'Last Chance'. Buy now or forever hold your peace ! -
Thanks for posting this, Brownie. Didn't realise he had been so ill, very sad news of course. His legacy is assured though thanks to the fantastic and highly creative production for Davis, Monk etc and not to forget his recordings of the 1950s. The work with Davis - especially from the early 70s - seems to get more and more recognition as the years go past. Nice to see you posting again and hope all is well.

How's side 2 of LP3?

That one is beyond cool. I picked up a great original vinyl of that one for about £8 last year on UA. Worth it for the cover alone. The music is also much better than one would probably expect at frst glance.

Yes - 'Hum Dono' it is. Part of my publicity campaign to get it reissued !

Happy Birthday ! Tjader's Blackhawk LP is going on the platter !

And they are two of our most illustrious musical exports to the US - along with Victor Feldman the ony ones who 'made' it in the USA, before Tubby Hayes. Whereas Shearing has high profile over here, that of Mrs McPartland should be higher !

I too prefer the later Roulette material to theVerve stuff but must re-aquaint myself with the Verve Mosaic set. The Count was on TV the other week in a program playing duets with Oscar Peterson in London, back around 1994/95. Amazing how modest Basie was in his chats with Oscar but with a very impish sense of humour. A very likeable character !

Uhhh... the J.J. Johnson box? Maybe? Man, I sure hope not!! Maybe the Mobley set is next? UP with this thread. The Mobley box is still available, after all this time. Incredible !

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Venuti/Lang set, CD1. Great sound quality on these recordings, considering the vintage ! -
Wow - brings back memories, will have to dig the CD out again. Saw Frisell on his North American tour just after that CD came out. A strong period for him !

Cosmic Eye 'Dream Sequence' (Regal Zonophone. stereo) Must get some joss-sticks lit !

They certainly don't do history teaching like they used to do. My first history teacher was phenomenal - and graphic. Images of 'snotty nosed anglo-saxon kids huddled around fires in storm-blasted huts whilst outside the Conqueror's men went on the rampage harrying the North'. Those images remain with me vividly ! Those early lessons took history from the time of the Sumerians and Ur through to the Middle Ages in great and glorious detail. Do they do that now?

Should be no problem getting the 'Disco 3000' CDs. In fact I may pay a visit to Honest Jon's this weekend to pick one up on CD (have the LP). That high-priced offering must have been for an original LP.

Total cloud cover over here. Non-event.
