  1. Globe and Mail obituary Jeff Healey RIP
  2. Tragic news - I also wasn't aware he was ill and had read about those up-coming tour plans. Lets not forget also the great work he's done assisting Mosaic Records with his collection of 78s and expertise on some of the early jazz box sets (for sure, a real expert when it came to early jazz). He will be missed - RIP.
  3. Johnny Hodges '56-61' set, CD3 Oliver Nelson set, CD3. 'Sound Pieces'
  4. Thanks - ah, yes - Ra is looking a bit younger.
  5. A few Mosaics on deck today: Herbie Nichols LP set, LP1. Then the Miles Davis 'In a Silent Way' LP set. Followed by the Hodges LP set.
  6. Thanks for posting this - bet there were more than a few drinks spilt when this was transmitted (mid-80s?). Too bad they cut it off for commercials just when the band were hitting the groove.
  7. Bangers, mash, and Dick Heckstall-Smith! Indeed - a great cover (and a nice album musically too). Much jazzier than most of Bruce's output at this time. Dick Heckstall-Smith sounds like a cross between Rollins and Kirk, with a bit of his own R&B madness thrown in.
  8. Bangers, mash, and Dick Heckstall-Smith! Have you read the Dick Heckstall-Smith autobiography, Blowing the Blues? It's a pretty good read, plus it includes a CD of unreleased music, the best of which are two long cuts by the group DHS$. I've read a copy of the original imprint at a library - a really good read. Some fascinating reminiscences about Graham Bond, the Colloseum years with Jon Hiseman and about Mike Taylor. Is it now available in re-print with CD? (in which case I'll get me a copy pronto).
  9. But it is a 'jazz holy grail'. It says so on the sales pitch ! VG+ cover too..
  10. Miles Davis 'Star People' (Dutch CBS, stereo)
  11. Maynard Ferguson 'Alive and Well In London' (UK CBS stereo) and 'The World of Maynard Ferguson' (UK CBS mono)
  12. That Pathe film is a gem, like much on that particula archive. 'Bits and Pieces' - brings back the memories, just about the earliest bit of pop music I remember beeing played on radios as a nipper.
  13. and of course Bill Evans and Gil Evans really were of (at least part) Welsh descent. It's an interesting theory that it added to the lyricism of their music, perhaps? Daffs are out in bloom in the front garden, even though a hurricane is blowing.
  14. Kenny Wheeler 'Around 6' (ECM)
  15. That's how I got high at a Foreigner concert. In 1987. It's the only time I've ever been high and, hell yes I inhaled! Happened to me at an open-air Tony Williams concert !
  16. Jack Bruce 'Things We Like' (Polydor)
  17. Victor Feldman also played drums with the Woody Herman Orchestra! Sat in with Glenn Miller's AAF when he was only 10, too, didn't he, Bill? I think I've seen a photo of him with Miller somewhere. Indeed, he did! Check out 'The Artful Dodger' on Concord Jazz. That's the young Feldman with Miller's band featured at the end of 'Haunted Ballroom' !
  18. Gordon Beck Quartet 'Experiments With Pops' (Major Minor, stereo)
  19. mike - keep an eye on that Amazon UK marketplace. It may well come up again !
  20. 'Gerry Mulligan Quartet' (Pac Jazz 10" mono). 'Carson City Stage' material on 1 side, tracks with Lee Konitz guesting on the otherside. Nice fat DG sound, if a little crackly.
  21. Damn - one of the things I miss about not living in North America is access to the BMG club. Bought stacks on that years back (including that Steely Dan box for about $20 Cdn). Why don't they do something for us Europeans?
  22. Only a matter of time before a bargain appears on UK Amazon market place (hopefully).
  23. I've got a fair bit of the Rich on various UK vinyls - a Verve double called 'Strike It Rich' and also a UK Philips LP with Mike Manieri, which is really nice. The music is very hard swinging. Lots of great Sonny Criss on the Verve material.
