  1. It's Bl*$$dy fantastic ! :rsmile:
  2. Eddie Diehl George Benson Sonny Greenwich
  3. It should be - it's taken from my LP ! But then again, I'm somewhat biased on this issue.
  4. Charlie Parker Colonel Parker Parker (of 'Thunderbirds')
  5. Art Farmer Quintet 'The Time and the Place'. What a discovery by Mosaic ! Great live set at MOMA and the version of Jimmy Heath's 'Far Away Lands' is particularly good.
  6. Tubby Hayes/Ronnie Scott - The Jazz Couriers 'The Last Word' (Japanese Tempo mono)
  7. I've got the original digipack per the lower photo - bought around 1989/90. There were a few of them in that format - Billy Hart's 'Enhance' for example.
  8. Oh dear . It's on its way (hopefully) from Dusty along with Japanese 'Before Dawn' ( ) and that elusive Sahib Shihab 2LP ( ). I've got the 'Last Word' Japanese Tempo by the Couriers and it sounds fine - although I did find it a bit 'shrill' until I put it through the VPI machine and then it started sounding good. I've an original Tempo of 'The Jazz Couriers' so this will be a regular-play backup. To be honest, I was stunned with what they achieved with 'The Last Word' - a virtually exact facsimile visually (same grade lam cover etc., better than the real thing) and sonically it sounded up to standard. I was hoping for the same thing with 'The Jazz Couriers'. Postscript - Just put 'The Jazz Couriers' on to double-check and it sounds great - nice, fat sound. Doesn't sound like a vinyl-drop either. Probably better than the real thing.
  9. Yes, I believe that is the case.
  10. Yes, a good article. Pt 2 is significantly better than Pt 1 I think. And some real rarities listed there (Chitinous Ensemble, Phil Seamen Live, Gyroscope). Sadly though, the article (which seems to have had the input of BGO and Dutton-Vocalion as advisers) indicates that a reissue of Hum-Dono is still not on the horizon. I wonder who will be putting out 'Windmil Tilter'. BGO?
  11. Here's a pic of the LP with the balloon in-situ:
  12. That would be the Jazzprint one -CORRECTION!!! CORRECTION!!! CORRECTION!!! Not Jazzprint, mea culpa, but Hux ! Catalogue Number: HUX095 - only difference other than the lack of bonus tracks is that the cover is not the original version. Just picked up the Hux CD today of McNair's 'The Fence'. It has the Val Wilmer sleeve notes and the photos - straight reissue of the original B&C LP (although they didn't include the front cover envelope and red balloon from the LP ). An interesting fusion session with McMair on Varitone and a young Keith Tippett on (straight-ahead) piano. Well worth hearing (I'm always a sucker too for anything with Tony Carr on drums or percussion). Shame though that the sleeve notes don't cover the actual circumstances of the recording session - Val Wilmer does though provide a good potted history of McNair. I'm informed that the other 'Fence' CD issue has been withdrawn as a result of legal action from Hux. That one will be one of the shortest lived ever British jazz reissues. Incidentally, reading through this months' issue of Record Collector and the article on British Jazz vinyl pt. 2 there's mention that Kenny Wheeler's 'Windmill Tilter' will be reissued on CD this year. False dawn perhaps? - hopefully not. May be time to get the champagne out, Roger !
  13. John Dennis Ada Moore Alonzius Levister
  14. And a bit more info: "99. Sun Ra Nuclear War Music Box SMB 40242 (Greece, LP and cassette) Y RA 2 (Italy, LP, 1984) Side A: Nuclear War (Ra) Retrospect (Ra) Drop Me Off in Harlem (Ellington) Sometimes I'm Happy (Caesar-Youmans) Side B: Celestial Love (Ra) Blue Intensity (Ra) Nameless One #2 (Ra) Smile (Chaplin) From the Variety Studios sessions of 9/82 (see previous two items). Y Records in England planned an album from these sessions -- to be titled Rays from the Outer Tomorrow -- but went out of business before it could be released. The same sequence of tracks appeared on this Greek LP and cassette licensed from Y Records and on the Italian Y release. Drop Me Off In Harlem is the only track not released on either Saturn. [Webber and Trent; thanks to Corbett for information on the Italian Y release] " Sound quality on the Music Box LP is extremely good ! (suprisingly). Anyone have the cassette?
  15. Doesn't Ventura play bass sax on one of Dizzy's Philips dates from the early '60s? Memories from school days. Yep. 'Dizzy On The French Riviera'. A nice cameo spot for Ventura. Included on the Mosaic Dizzy set.
  16. Neil Ardley/Don Rendell/Ian Carr 'Greek Variations & Other Aegean Stories' (UK Columbia Lansdowne, stereo)
  17. Just listening to 'Nuclear War' on the Greek 'Y' Records. If my memory is right this was due to be released by them originally in the UK but the company went bust beforehand so the limited copies that got out were from the Greek pressing plant. A nice slice of early-80s Ra though - and the title track vocal is a 'period classic'.
  18. Not sure of the exact figure but I was hit with around £7-8 service charge and £10-12 tax on one package. Ouch !
  19. I've been hit hard by DHL so avoid them like the plague ! Really? Tell me more! So far so good for me, touch wood... I've been 'dinged' by them in the past on occasions when International Airmail, for the same size of packet, comes through scot-free. It probably depends where in the country you live. DHL don't have a local office near me either - I prefer to go to the PO (about 50 paces away ).
  20. Sun Ra 'Nuclear War' (Greek 'Y' Records) Not a neighbour-friendly LP with all those 'MF' references in the vocals ! Important to crank the volume down after the Tubbys.
  21. Tubby Hayes/Ronnie Scott - The Jazz Couriers 'The Last Word' (Japanese Tempo TAP26 facsimile LP, mono) Tubby Hayes/Ronnie Scott 'The Jazz Couriers' (UK Tempo TAP15, mono)
  22. Clinton and Dubya would come well down the pack compared with these guys.
  23. Appalling - only in Times Square ! I've visited that store a few times - it was a good source for VEEs and Conns in the past. Also Japanese imports. Much preferred Tower Records though.
  24. Very true. As for the LT's, I find the sound a bit on the 'thin' side and the high-end roll-off can be noticeable.
  25. Ah, those Supercaps Yep, porcy - I'm sure it's helped. I'll pop on the LT-series vinyl and see how that one sounds too a bit later. I remember when that one came out on LP around 1980 it was difficult to source over here as (unlike the first of the 'Rainbow' series which were also UK pressings) - it was only available as a US pressing. So I didn't get to hear this one, 'Mother Ship' and 'Medina' for some years afterwards. Only the specialist shops here had a very limited stock of these titles.
