Some years back at a film session hosted by Ken Poston in LA I saw what was obviously a rare B&W film clip of Harry Babasin on cello in something of a 'chamber' setting. I wonder if that was the Jazzpickers?

Just given 'Moonscape' the nth spin since picking it up and I can say you won't be disappointed. Not often I get a spare vinyl on new releases but I have for this one. I've heard exerpts from the 'Flexi-Sex' and it is hilarious. Basically recitations of dirty mac brigade letters sent in to porn mags back in the 70s. Trunk also did a limited T-shirt with exerpts from some of those letters but it sold out fast. Wear that one at your peril ! There's a £4.99 10-year anniversary sampler just come out with tracks from the 'Dirty Fan Mail', 'Moonscape' and the Herbie - must get that one.

Hmm. Thanks for that. It will be a case of checking sound samples before picking up this one I think.

Yes, and the 'Speak Like A Child' cover is of him and his new wife, I believe.

Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton Together, then Ornette
sidewinder replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Yes, you are right - it was Acoustic Ladyland - who got rave reviews at Cheltenham and Bath a few years back. Of the two groups, I think I prefer the 'Polar Bear'. I would have like to have gone to last night's Ornette gig but logistics ruled against it. Did see Ornette's gig with Denardo and the two acoustic bassists a couple of years ago at Cheltenham though. -
It's on 'Ye Olde Trunkeshoppe'. Link Here

Anyone go to the Ornette show? -
I've got Lexingtons with the white parchment-style paper and I think one of the Horace Silvers has a rice-paper inner. Will have to check.

Didn't Leo Records issue that Braxton 2004 (which I missed) - in which case maybe they can do the Taylor/Braxton on CD? I think the Taylor/Braxton lasted just less than 2 hours total (they came on around 8.30 I think) so - yes - 'Jazz On 3' are likely to cut some of it. I have to say - a couple of days after the event now - that Braxton's playing on soprano was some of the greatest playing on that instrument I have ever heard. As for Polar Bear it's the second or third time I have seen them and the Sunday show was their best of these I think (I didn't like their TV appearance with Jools Holland BTW). Definitely a first for the 'playing' of a rubber balloon at a jazz gig I have been at. -

i'm a big trunk fan and have a good number of them, but this one has me baffled. can you expound on this date, side? 'Moonscape' was recorded by Garrick back in 1964 prior to his Argo albums and done as a private issue - 99 copies only on 10" LP. Johnny Trunk got hold of one of these rarities and with master tapes gone and with Garrick's OK - has reissued the session on CD and limited 12" vinyl (500 copies). It's a nice date, not unlike his Argo trio on 'Cold Mountain' I guess but with a 'fresher' feel typical of the early 60s. In that respect it reminds me of the Rendell/Carr 'Shades of Blue'. The original LP was recorded and issued by the obscure Airborne label - sound is not the greatest I guess but I find it quite adequate.

The level of energy was so high that at one stage towards the end I thought they would collectively levitate off the stage ! Not an easy listen though. It was a challenge for me at times and I wonder how many people came along expecting maybe some bebop. Funilly enough though, the one guy who was for me the easiest to listen to was Cecil Taylor ! Incidentally, to echo JohnS's earlier comment, rarely have I had so much trouble getting to and from a concert in London as this one. The plan was to drive in to the SW area around Twickenham, dump the car and catch the train - turned out there was a major damned Genesis concert at Twickenham Stadium ( ) with traffic and people puring out of the place and this lost me nearly 15 minutes of the concert thanks to the mayhem. Fortunately it didn't jeopardise the 'main act'. Every time I come out of London these days I need a week to recover. -
Anything Johnny puts out on vinyl is as good as sold to me. Just noticed this on the Trunk site - looks very interesting indeed. The Garrick 'Moonscape' LP is only out for a week or so and already sold out on Trunk's site. That one is a beauty so snap it up if you can find it.

Definitely not. A jazz-free zone for about 50 square miles. Correction - my neighbour was at a local Pat Metheny concert I went to a few years back so its not so bad..

Yep - to be broadcast this week. A good chance that it will also appear 'on the other site'. -

Interesting to read those thoughts - it was indeed a great concert. Very theatrical entrance from stage left by Cecil, shaking his beads and dancing like a colourful whirling dervish to the piano stool. Wish someone had filmed that ! That first duet (or pair of them, I guess) with Oxley kicked things off superbly. The thing that struck me about Cecil's playing was the incredible precision - not a note out of place. He was on form in a big way, I think. The music reminded me quite a bit of his playing on 'Conquistador' - and definite 'cakewalk' sections thrown in there as well, delving well back into jazz's early history. Some of Cecil's piano runs here were suprisingly delicate. Pure genius ! William Parker's solo bass feature was brilliant too. First time I've seen him - hopefully not the last. Lovely big sound he got with the instrument bowed (and with a lot of pitch manipulation by bending of strings). First time I've seen Oxley too - looks quite impassive at his (huge) drum kit. He sounded good with Cecil (although I always think that Taylor is a very self-sufficient player, more than happy to stay solo) but in the quartet and in tandem with Parker he went from good to fantastic. The quartet set seemed to go past for me very quickly - mesmerising effect I think - Cecil upped the ante and energy level even more and Braxton (first time I've seen him) met the challenge with great spirit. Not to forget the maelstrom of sound thrown into the mix by Tony Oxley and William Parker. It would have been easy to underestimate Parker's input here but on the quiet he was working up a storm of propulsive power. The whole thing built up so that when the final 5 or so minutes came the intensity was astonishing. Cecil firing runs in from the left and Braxton responding (most notably I think on the soprano) in an incredible dialogue. As Red notes in his blog, that final Taylor solo was something else - certainly some of the most astonishing music I ever heard in that last 5-10 minutes (and I'd add Cecil's playing in the duo to that too). It's a shame that there was no encore - the band left the stage pretty quick. Must have all been exhausted though - the whole thing passed far too quickly. Nice set from Polar Bear to kick off proceedings too. A hard act to play before but the guys sounded good - particular credit to Pete Wareham for some fine 'out' tenor to get in the spirit of things. -
Here in Europe, Pathe Marconi did the first issue as a DMM with the same cover. It also came with one of those round Blue Note decal posters. I prefer the TOCJ.

This sounds interesting . Does anyone know if Vol 1 with Joe Henderson is still available?
