  1. What's with the pipe? 'The Life Aquatic' is catching !
  2. Hpefully every 10th squirt theres a bit of hot mustard residue in there. Plonkers !
  3. Lou Donaldson 'Good Gracious !' (BN NY USA mono) Priceless cover !
  4. Congrats !
  5. The track from the 'Singles' is an excerpt from the performance on the Art Yard. The music settles down a bit after that great spacey start. I have the LP and like it - will be tempted by the CD if it includes more music.
  6. There's always gunk left from the production process. Even Mosaic vinyl I usually clean on this machine before first use. Certainly makes a difference in terms of definition !
  7. Yes, he's definitely worth seeing. Still a potent force on the tenor ! Caught his show at NorthSea last year, a tribute to his old friend Clifford Brown. Worth also checcking him out on the move 'The Terminal' - if you can get hold of a copy of the DVD.
  8. First reactions on hearing this album for first time in a fair while (years) are that it would make quite a good candidate Mosaic Single. Petition to Mr Cuscuna, perhaps? 'Hawkman'
  9. Art Blakey Jazz Messengers 'Gypsy Folk Tales' (UK Pye stereo)
  10. I picked up this one on LP when it first came out (UK Pye) and have always liked it. At the time it seemed to herald the start of a new phase of intensive recording and touring by the Messengers after several 'quiet' years (apart from those two Sonet LPs with the Giants of Jazz and Sonny Stitt). Very much a sophomore effort for Bobby Watson as arranger I think - and a very good one. 'Time Will Tell' I think is probably the most memorable track on this album. Dennis Irwin and Blakey lay down a heavy groove. There was a bit of a debate in the UK jazz press at the time about the subject matter for 'Ronnie's a Dynamite Lady'. Mathews or Scott?
  11. These are a favourite of mine. Have UK pressings of the NYAQ 'Mohawk', Brand 'Anatomy', Bley 'Touching' and Russell 'Outer View'. Also both of the Cursons - one on UK Fontana ('Tears') and the other on Japanese Fontana. Never seen the Levitt or Redman on either Dutch or UK Fontana though (suspect that these were 'Dutch only').
  12. A 'certain site' has some nice videos of her taken from German TV - one with Rhoda Scott.
  13. Would be perfect for the Cheltenham Festival, in this country.
  14. She has at least one fan overseas ! Caught that group with Ray Anderson on one occasion and it smoked pretty good. Something quite German Gothic in her playing though which sometimes comes through, very quirky and I like it.
  15. Jimmy Smith 'Groovin At Small's Paradise Vol 2' (BN 47W63rd DG mono)
  16. I got the first of these two sets the other day , like you say proto-mosaics. very nice, . Didn't realise there was a Volume 2 , I'll look out for it Released in the US only Clunky - so any copy over here would be an import. Vol 1 was released in the UK as well as the US. I bought Vol 1 after one of the BBC Radio 2 jazz programmes ('Sounds of Jazz' I think) played one of the Roy Porter tracks with Dolphy. All of the Lateefs by the way are excellent. Two of my favourites - 'Morning' and 'Gong'. Both in great sound.
  17. I see he's been touring with David Weiss and the 'Cookers' group ! Fabulous player and a highlight of many a late-60s Blue Note session. (especially the Hubbards and my favourite of his, Sam Rivers 'Dimensions and Extensions'). Happy Birthday to Mr Spaulding.
  18. Powell set, LP2 - followed by 'Complete Herbie Nichols Blue Note', LP1. Both sublime - and very well re-mastered.
  19. Bud Powell Complete Blue Note, LP1
  20. Any plans to bring this band to Europe, David?
  21. The 'Black California' and 'Black California Vol 2' are gems - Dolphy with Roy Porter etc. Proto-Mosaics before their time!
  22. Some really nice things in that LP series ! I would single out: Donald Byrd 'Long Green' John Coltrane/Wilbur Harden 'Tanganyika Strut' Pepper Adams 'Pure Pepper'.
  23. Slide Hampton Orchestra 'Two Sides Of Slide' (Charlie Parker Records mono). Really nice music but what did Doris Parker do to make the sound so bad?
  24. Saw one of them in a shop wall display a while back at £20, near mint. And passed on it (DAMN !)
