  2. Whitesnake Tawny Kitaen Chuck Finley Chuck Findley Billy Cross Crocodile Dundee
  3. Pouring down outside and Glastonbury is a mudbath again ( ) so its: Mike Gibbs Orchestra 'Just Ahead' (Polydor 2LP promo copy) Miles Davis 'Bitches Brew' (UK CBS 2LP - first press)
  4. Tiny Tim Mini-Me Pee-Wee Marquette
  5. One of the major causes was my parents picking up a Buddy Rich UK Liberty LP called 'Mercy Mercy Mercy' in the early 1970s - cool cover of Buddy in kaftan. At the time I was taking brass instrument lessons and this one got me hooked on both big bands in general and Buddy in particular (if I recall right the LP was in the bargain rack at Woolworths for £0.50 ). I also recall reading in the notes about Art Pepper making a comeback of sorts on this LP and marvelling at his fantastic alto playing - he was pretty well a forgotten man at that time. From there it was into delving through a jazz-mad uncle's record collection with Charlie Parker 'Pick of Parker' on Verve, Wardell Gray Memorial Album Vols 1 and 2 on Transatlantic and the rest is history.. (within a year or so of this there were major reissue series over here on Prestige, Milestone and Impulse and my record collection started to fill up).
  6. Just checked my Record 5 side B. No defect visible or audible. My copy is either 785 or 985 (can't decipher Cindy's writing ) and must have been one of the last copies - bought at (T-1) days.
  7. A belated Happy Birthday !
  8. He was also with George Coleman's Octet back in the 1970s and there are some recordings of his work with this group - on Ronnie Scott's 'house' label and Affinity, I think (got them somewhere - will have to check).
  9. Caught them live at a festival over here a few years ago. Interesting, not quite my thing.
  10. Yikes - nasty 1970s BN blue label flashbacks !
  11. This is one of the few Mosaic LP sets I haven't managed to put my hands on yet. The other ones are the Lee Morgan, the Master Jazz piano, the first two Commodore sets and the Basie Studio Roulette.... How good is this set, Bob? Pretty good Yves - if you are a fan of Nat's trios (it weighs a ton though - it's the size of a Commodore). The 'Master Jazz Piano' is another one that I have been giving a spin of late - that one is well worth getting hold of too with some real piano finds from this enthusiasts' label of the 60s/70s. The 'Basie Studio Roulette' is probably my all time favourite Mosaic - along with Thad & Mel. Superlative !
  12. I like the record too. Mobley's tone is a bit thin (the lung problems were evident by then I think) but it is a very lyrical date. For once the 'Rainbow Series' cover art on the original LP with a shack under snow in what looks like Siberia was spot on.
  13. Stanley Turrentine 'Dearly Beloved' (BN NY USA mono)
  14. Thoroughly enjoyable - like just about every other Turentine Blue Note (I can't think of any bad one he did in the 60s). I have a copy of this on the vinyl. This is the one credited to 'Little Miss Cott', of course.
  15. Just come across this - probably ancient history by now. I have the 'Black Giants' 2LP set (a very nice compilation from CBS) and the track 'Grasshopper' is indeed included. Very nice, typical mid-50s Quincy and if the rest of the tracks are up to this standard it is well worth an issue. Sound though I think was in 're-channelled stereo' - they should have left it in mono. Horace Silver is indeed on piano and he features strongly on 'Grasshopper'. What a shame that it is not listed for the forthcoming Quincy Mosaic set - although a 'Single' release could be a possibility I guess.
  16. Happy Birthday Gents ! The Euro-hosted birthday early warning system must have failed today !
  17. Best wishes for a speedy recovery !
  18. Or the build it yourself $1 submarine..
  19. I'd buy it ! Have heard bits of the Watson albums but never bought them. Always regret not buying that Watson/Blakey Big Band album on Timeless (I think) - had a nice version of 'ETA' on it.
  20. I think we all need to club together and hire an Executor to draw up priced inventories of Blue Notes/Mosaics/rare miscellaneous others before the heirs cart it all out to Oxfam.
  21. My Miles 63-64 box was pranged on arrival too but Mosaic were spiffing and sent out a replacement pronto.
