  1. Nope, didn't know that. Not suprising to hear though, based on what I heard of his playing on 'Black Saint'. The boundaries were very fluid between jazz, pop, folk, experimental over here especially around 68-72. Harold McNair and Danny Thompson are two good examples of musicians who keep appearing in all sorts of contexts in this era and there are quite a few others.
  2. She's sometimes to be seen at gigs around these parts Porcy - especially when hubby Keith is giving one of his piano recitals.
  3. Bobby Hutcherson 'Waiting' (BN Liberty blue label stereo)
  4. I've always thought that the Hubbard/Shaw Blue Notes were under-rated. Very nice listening on these - and Kenny Garrett proves to be an excellent foil. Nice tune selection too ('Desert Moonlight', 'Calling Miss Kadija' etc)
  5. You didn't get hold of a copy, Yves? Then SS1s cover art is appropriate I guess.
  6. He's also been out of the country in the US for so long that the idea of a Knighthood probably sounds pretty good. Same sort of effect on non-Brits given honourary gongs such as Gen. Al Haig (for services to the Falkland Isles), Clinton, Pinochet etc.
  7. At least they got the spelling of 'Johnny Griffin' correct !
  8. Humph was actually born into the aristocracy - which may possibly have had an inflence on it. Agree that he's very much worth a 'K'.
  9. Hopefully over the next few years they'll finally get round to giving Stan Tracey a gong. That one is well overdue. At least Mike Westbrook has an OBE - that one needs upgrading though too. Too many Brit artists still need the official recognition of 'services to jazz'. Michael Garrick and Graham Collier come immediately to mind.
  10. (pangs of jealousy ) Just playing: Mike Gibbs Band 'Just Ahead' (Polydor 2LP stereo - recorded at Ronnie Scotts) and Mike Westbrook 'Celebration' (Deram stereo)
  11. Haven't his balls dropped yet?
  12. I think I agree with you there. Fabulous playing by Hutch - and superbly recorded by Contemporary too. Another one well worth checking out from the late 60s vintage is Archie Shepp's 'On This Night'. More exploratory in style.
  13. Incredible that Buster Williams and Courtney Pine are on that list. Just for starters.
  14. Oliver Nelson Orchestra 'Full Nelson' (Verve)
  15. The Olympic Chairman has just declared that he loves the 2012 London logo ! IOC Then it's official - it must be crap.
  16. And I'm currently wearing the 'New York Is Now' tee. I really like them - but they would have benefitted from thicker grade cotton and bigger sizing (or maybe I'm getting fat?)
  17. Hopefully she isn't a secret jazzomaniac and logging into boards like this !
  18. Better get that Lee Morgan cover ready !
  19. Sometimes, being wife-free has its uses.
  20. Jeez - didn't see it ! Quite a delay before Her Maj got round to it..
  21. Just announced by the Beeb that George Shearing has been knighted. Often these things go to the most undeserving bums, stiffs and freeloaders but in this case - thoroughly well deserved. Congrats to Sir George !
  22. Nice album of the fine mainstream clarinetist Sandy Brown, with early appearances by McLaughlin and Wheeler. Pretty it aint though.
  23. Never heard of them ! Wonder if this is a boot? (there again, what isn't these days).
