  1. I might be tempted with the Braxton and Cecil - travel arrangements permitting.
  2. Hadn't previously seen that title before ! Makes me think immediately of the man on the left.. Oh - I see they changed the name. Perhaps just as well.
  3. Freddie Hubbard 'High Blues Pressure' (Atlantic, stereo). Very under-rated, this one.
  4. Just noticed that for any yurpeans amongst us, zweitausendens.de have Vols 3 and 4 boxes of the set in stock.
  5. Very Happy Birthday, Bertrand !
  6. Truly depressing news to end the day on. Just glad I picked some of those 'limited editions' in the Concord (spit) sale of a while back - wished I'd got more. Time to put the Prestige/New Jazz/Riverside/Contemporary vinyl in a safe.
  7. i was curious about this album when i saw it a couple years back ... any recs for it? thanks. A bit late to reply to this but yes, it's good. Typical Clarke/Boland/Sadi fayre of the period and - as per usual - well recorded by SABA. I like it (wish I could find a vinyl).
  8. No kidding ! Ronnie-Scott-itis is spreading. I guess they are gouging the punters now to pay for the refurb. Personally I prefer the days when you could pay less than £10 to see Miles Davis AND get free off-metered parking for the car right outside the RFH !
  9. Gene Ammons 'Jug' (Prestige Bergenfield DG mono)
  10. Not to forget Helen Merrill 'Mixes' either. That was a 2LP set that had one LP of Helen and the other LP with great bop sides by Wardell, Stan Getz etc.
  11. Hank Jones is again in the lineup for NorthSea next month. Almost an institution there now.
  12. 'Visions' LP now next in line on deck, by way of celebration.
  13. Tyrone 'Trainwreck' Washington 'Natural Essence' (BN Liberty stereo)
  14. Duke Pearson 'Now Hear This !' (BN Liberty stereo)
  15. Some of them are better, to my ears. Exhibit A - Booby's 'Happenings', where there is distortion on the mono pressings (at least every one I've heard). The stereo NY USA is great !
  16. Joe Harriott's 'Personal Portrait' on UK Columbia was a definite attempt at 60s MOR crossover with so-so string arrangements but is redeemed by some nice playing by Joe. Not his greatest Columbia though. Similarly the Decca albums by Shake Keane - 'Dig It' and 'With the Keating Sound'.
  17. It has to be put into the context of the time, I think. After all, John Handy had big sales to the disco fraternity with his 'Hard Work' LP around this time and maybe the pressure was on for Jackie to deliver more of the same. Maybe they were hoping for major airplay on the decks at Studio 54.
  18. George Braith 'Soul Stream' (BN NY USA mono). Signed on back by George !
  19. When was this recorded and what label was it on originally? AMG isn't helpful. Vocalion LAE 587 - Issued in UK in 1964 on this Decca subsidiary label.
  20. It is particularly satisfying taking out the mutt..
  21. Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland 'The Golden Eight' (BN NY USA mono)
  22. I would say if you like 'Deeds, Not Words' on Riverside you will probably like this set.
