  1. The two-eyes are generally of a mid to late 60s vintage (after about 1963ish I think). 6-eyes were before that. The 6-eyes also had deep grooves, which were missing on the two-eye pressings. Both can be very good. I like the two-eyes LPs of Miles 60s quintet and Monk, for example.
  2. George Braith 'Soul Stream' (BN NY USA mono) and 'Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge At Th Opera House' (Verve Trumpeter DG mono)
  3. Big John Patton 'Boogaloo' (BN Rare Groove Edition ie. the only one)
  4. And they will ship these overseas, if required. The list of what is available is on their site.
  5. True words. Last time I was in there I came out with two nice Norgran Tal Farlows. Like a moron though I passed on the Billy Bauer 'Plectrist'. Regretted it ever since.
  6. Nice one. I have a copy of the UK CBS version of that one. Great band ! Now spinning Grant Green 'Carryin' On' (BN Liberty stereo). Kicks ass in the vinyl version.
  7. Yep, when it comes to this earlier material, Mr Wenzel is The Man. In the past I tended to avoid the early jazz sets but there's a great sense of discovery with sets such as this - and the inner anorak in me just loves the scholarly and completist presentation.
  8. Nice cover ! Looks like one by 'Harvey'.
  9. 'Jazztet Complete Argo/Mercury' CD1
  10. I agree with Mike's comments Al and would probably sell the grandmother before parting with this particular Mosaic. As well as the fantastic booklet with nice Francis Wolff session shots, I particularly like the track ordering of the Mosaic. For example, CD 1 starting off with 'Land of Nod' is an amazing 'declaration of intent' that sets the scene for the rest of the set. I find the sound of the CDs OK too - don't have any of the RVGs/Conns to compare only vinyl for these sessions. If I want high-end sonics I dig out the LPs. For back-to-back non-stop Hill listening pleasure, the Mosaic's the one.
  11. And to accompany the set, don't forget to pick up the OJC 'Limited Editions' of 'Groovin' With Golson', 'Gone With Golson' and 'Gettin' With It'. Originally on New Jazz and two of these by a Jazz-tetish quintet with Curtis Fuller, one ('Gettin') a quartet with Tommy Flanagan. Well organised sessions with an informal feel and grade-A Golson solos.
  12. Brilliant album though this is, I wonder if this might have the ladies pulling their hair out? Something lighter perhaps - maybe one of Woody's more ballad-oriented quartet albums perhaps? 'In My Own Sweet Way', perhaps?
  13. Wasn't unusual for him to take bookings personally and fill out the reservations. Happened to me a few times but I never got any jokes !
  14. Orange juice.. (preceded by a pint of Wadworths 6X)
  15. Sat through evenings of his one-liners. Always the same stuff but delivered in impeccable style. "At the Club next week we have Joe Henderson" (room goes silent all of a sudden). "That's Joe "Piano" Henderson".. and in a similar vein: "Next week at the club we have MILES..." (huge gasps of awe and shock, people spilling their drinks etc - it was 1979). "Sir Bernard Miles". and one of his perenial favourites- "Why don't all you people sitting in the front row hold hands to see if you can contact the living".
  16. Couldn't find a copy of this anywhere in London today ! .. and whilst sipping a coffee by the window in 'Rays Jazz' a whole army of cyclists went past naked.
  17. 'Bud Freeman. Esq.' (Fontana, mono) Grand total of £3.50 with 50% discount. One of my greatest ever bargains..
  18. Very sad to hear. It was a full room last time I was in there - with the whole set of 'Free America' on display.
  19. A couple of OJC 'Limited Editions'. The Barbara Lea 'Lea In Love' for £3 and Benny Golson's 'Gone With Golson' for £5. Also picked up the Chick Corea 'Comple Is Sessions' Conn for somewhat more.
  20. Some nice videos on there. That Miles 'Calypso Frelimo' is particularly good.
