    Sam Noto

May have seen Noto (not 100% sure, failing memory ) in the lineup for a Dave McMurdo Orchestra performance at Art Gallery of Ontario. If my memory is correct the MC that night might have been board member Ted O'Reilly !
  2. Picked up the German issue a few weeks ago in (real) near mint for £5. I was a happy man.
  3. 'Henri Renaud et son orchestre' (Fresh Sound reissue of the Blue Star/Barclay) Do you have an original of this one, Brownie?
  4. The notes for the Parker Benedetti Mosaic for sure (work of art) and Roswell Rudd's notes for the Herbie Nichols are also great but I've also a great soft spot for the notes to the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Anita O'Day, Larry Young and Jackie McLean. And quite a few others . Commodore Vol 1 and Nat Cole are outstanding too in their craftsmanship ! Very honourable mention too to Michael Cuscuna's notes for the Woody Shaw. Written with great feeling.
  5. 'Curtis Fuller with Red Garland' (New Jazz) Sonny Fortune 'Long Before Our Mothers Cried' (Strata-East) Dick Grove 'Little Bird Suite' (Pacific Jazz stereo) Buddy De Franco/Art Blakey 'Blue Bag' (Joy)
  6. That would be Joe Hunt (who is on some of the Riversides and the 'Live at the Five Spot').
  7. Lee Morgan 'The Sixth Sense' (BN Liberty stereo). Very under-rated IMO !
  8. Looks great ! I notice that there was a poster for an Anita O'Day gig on one of the clips. Must have been one of her last performances? From those pictures it looks as if the area where the stage is at present day is where they must have had the bar in the old times. The old stage area must have been over towards the kitchen/washrooms. Look forward to picking this up when it comes out.
  9. Just spinning: Jackie McLean 'It's Time' (BN NY USA mono) and Frank Foster 'Manhattan Fever' (BN Liberty stereo)
  10. Johnny Coles 'The Warm Sound' (Classic Records). In 'stereorama' sound..
  11. I have that one on London Records. It is the UK issue of the UA soundtrack.
  12. A very happy birthday to you !!
  13. Mose Allison Trio 'Back Woods Suite' (Esquire mono)
  14. Norma, John and Kenny Surman too But no way Tubby..
  15. I can recommend the Japanese Impulse reissues (MCA) - I have a few of those from Mr Tanno and they sound great ! The domestic/US MCAs are from the 1970s/80s I think and tend to be not so great - I seem to recall that the ones from the 80s are DMM. UK 70s Impulses and Red/Black US second pressings are both worth having though. Got my first Japanese Impulse reissue.(MCA). I bought the Oliver Nelson 'Blues and the Abstarct Truth' and I am very very very pleased with it. Thanks for the info, Bob. Shame they are difficult to find and a bit expensive as well. No problem ! I'll bet that one sounds great. Funnily enough my first copy of that LP (a mid-70s UK reissue) sounds pretty good too. They must have been working from very good tapes. I'll dig out my Japanese MCA of Shepp's 'Magic of Ju Ju' sometime over the weekend.
  16. Indeed, I'd forgotten about that one !
  17. Howdy Doody Roy Rogers Trigger
  18. That is the British way - start a new club..
  19. It all started turning to rat shit when they started discussing the merits of Stacey Kent..
  20. First rate BN session - I'll dig out the King Records pressing this weekend.
  21. Within a few years he was being featured on David Essex albums (which was the first place I heard him) !
  22. No snow as yet but it's getting cooler. Snow predictions in parts of the UK for later this week. So far it's been damned mild this Winter...
  23. I've never heard of any other version of 'Natural Illusions' other than the Applause LP and CD, compared with the original vinyl release. Those Applause issues were the all time pits as far as Blue Note reissues were concerned. In the dark ages before Conns and RVGs they would regularly turn up for 50 cents or so in five and dime stores. Usually avoided them. Nice though if you were into dung brown Reid Miles cover art. Indeed they were so bad that one day they will probably be collectable !
  24. I have the Johnny Coles 'Warm Sounds' on order and will post thoughts when it arrives.
