  1. Caught one of his 'DJ' shows in Cheltenham some years ago. Two enormous decks on the stage and the place packed with under-25 hip-hop groovers and assorted posers/chavs. All credit though that he featured Harry Beckett's Quintet with Chris Biscoe on stage for a set of mainly Mingus material before the vinyl action kicked off. His Brit Jazz vinyl collection must be astonishing !
  2. Unusual example of a Brit getting a session on ESP. Used to hear him a lot on BBC Jazz Club sessions back in the day - his wife Pepi was featured quite a lot too.
  3. Great session but total lunacy. Think of all the Jasmine reissues of this one you can buy for this money ! (about 200 ).
  4. Nice find! Yep - Sounds great. It's one of those old Columbia 'factory samples' so the sound is spectacular. After years of living with the CD, the clarity is a revelation !
  5. Michael Garrick 'The Heart Is A Lotus' (UK Argo stereo). With Norma Winstone.
  6. Yep, these are worth having - also way better than the DMMs. Look out for 'Wally' scribed in the runout groove. I've got quite a few of them - Mobleys, Shorters, Hutchersons etc. Especially good for the previously unreleased (apart from Japan) sessions.
  7. Michael Garrick 'Home Stretch Blues' (UK Argo stereo)
  8. And there's me, thinking this was a thread about Dick Morrissey !
  9. Joe Harriott 'Abstract' (UK Columbia Lansdowne mono)
  10. 'Oscar Peterson Collates Vol 1 and Vol 2' (both Clef 10" mono)
  11. Next up - Horace Silver 'Blowin' the Blues Away' (BN 47W63d DG mono). Appropriate !
  12. Les McCann Ltd 'On Time' (Pacific Jazz stereo - yellow vinyl )
  13. Reports I'm hearing are that an unusually strong Atlantic jetstream are causing something of a 'funnelling' effect. Can't believe the TV footage I've just seen of a woman completely blown off her feet in Central London.
  14. Hang in there !
  15. Wow - Germany seems to have got it bad, although the reports I've read are that the UK got the worst of it as usual. That's very unusual for the mainland to see Atlantic storms of that ferocity (major damage even in Bavaria, I believe). 12 killed in Europe total so far today, 7 in the UK. A friend of mine in the North of England smashed from falling roof tiles. The wind was howling here in the SW from about 4am but although strong, the winds haven't done any major damage. About 50mph average. Major chaos on roads, trains and planes..
  16. I remember hearing Peterson's show on Capitol Radio around 1982/83 quite regularly. That was the first time I heard the Wilkerson Blue Note material - a track from 'Shoutin', I recall. This led to the 'Blue Bop' etc vinyl releases. First heard tracks from Tina Brooks 'True Blue' on that show too. Very rarely heard in the UK before then, I guess..
  17. Excluding travel in the UK I guess, unless you want to stand the whole journey in the john like a sardine just to get a 'seat'.
  18. Interesting !
  19. I can recommend the Japanese Impulse reissues (MCA) - I have a few of those from Mr Tanno and they sound great ! The domestic/US MCAs are from the 1970s/80s I think and tend to be not so great - I seem to recall that the ones from the 80s are DMM. UK 70s Impulses and Red/Black US second pressings are both worth having though.
  20. CD3 Track 15: "15. Mambo Tittoro"
  21. For some reason the 'Blue' labels seem to be rediculously overpriced in Europe. In North America they seem to be readily available around the $20 mark but are routinely twice that in UK and France, for example. High prices in UK probably as a result of not many copies making it over here (the country was bust in the 1960s and early 70s ). Not sure exactly when the switch to blue label happened but must have been around 1967.
  22. New Tubby Hayes box set on the way (end of this month) with early (Tempo) material. Looks tempting !
  23. Damn ! My chance of a cheap copy of Bill Evans 'Last Waltz' has probably bit the dust. Good while it lasted though..
