  1. I recall that Turtle itself had a somewhat interesting history and was very short lived. A spin off by producer Pete Eden after leaving Deram (and right at the runt end of the 1960s British jazz 'boom' when things started to go pear-shaped financially). They were produced in very limited numbers with limited distribution and (naturally) sold poorly in the UK. I suspect there were probably more copies distributed to Continental Europe.
  2. Ah yes, FMR - that's the one. Why do I always think of it as 'FMP'? Nice CD re-master - as you say the packaging could have been better (including getting the cover art in focus !)
  3. 'Tristano, Konitz, Marsh' LP 1
  4. Did you get to see anything good on your trip? Hopefully so - although tthe listings looked a bit on the thin side for last weekend last time I looked. Not that easy for me personally to get into London these days, living over 100 miles away. Feels like an expedition (and a mighty expensive one) every time I do it !
  5. Dig her work with RRK on 'Other Folks Music' (on piano). And on 'El Hombre' of course. I see there's an article on her in this months 'JazzTimes'.
  6. Very Happy Birthday, Noj !
  7. Bill Barron/Ted Curson 'Now Hear This !' (Audio Fidelity)
  8. Even back in the day I don't think Ogun LPs were distributed that widely - even in the UK only the jazz specialists like Mole stocked them.
  9. I've got the Turtle of the Osborne (that one and the John Taylor 'Pause and Think Again'). The 'Outback' by the way did come out on CD (FMP?) - not sure if it's still in print.

    Joe Newman

I'm sure you're right. Not sure I ever heard any opinion from Mingus on Joe Newman but he was a known fanatic over Thad Jones, another player who could straddle the idioms. I've also been impressed with Newman's playing on the Buck Clayton Jame sessions Mosaic. Good reminder to dig that one out.

    Joe Newman

I'm a fan. Love his work on those 60s Quincy Jones and Oliver Nelson big band sessions. If ever a trumpeter bridged the gap between swing and bop it was Joe Newman !
  12. Maybe ask him to consider Tony Williams 'Tokyo Live' whilst he's at it?
  13. Now there's dedication for you ! Glad things have gone real well with the trip.
  14. That Milt Jackson/Lucky Thompson 'Second Nature' twofer is a real gem. Excellent sound quality too - which goes for much of this series. Currently spinning George Benson 'Weekend In LA' (Warner Brothers 2LP)
  15. Wonder if this was from the recital he gave with Archie Shepp at the QEH from around that time? (seems like longer ago than 2002 though). If so, I was there that night (Hill did about a half-hour solo recital as well as the duos with Schepp). Thanks for the heads-up. I have the programme somewhere and will check the date.
  16. I wonder if the title of this thread 'Fantasy nerds..' will attract a whole army of nerdish Googlers?
  17. I've got these two albums on the original Libertys as well as the Mosaic and like 'em both. Don't even mind Althea Young's vocals - worth hearing for the spacey (and very sympathetic) backing from Larry. 'Second MG's comment on 'Majestic Soul' also. These two albums are worthy of reissue. Is that Althea on the cover of 'Heaven On Earth'?
  18. I've mentioned it before but the early 1990s Sunset Boulevard store kicked ass. Picked up the TOCJ Tyrone Washington 'Natural Essence' there one one good day.
  19. John Goodman Fred Flintstone Barney Rubble
  20. I thought I was doing well with my $20 copy of the LP ! 'Iron Sheep' turned out a bit pricier though.
  21. Shocking news. May he RIP. Will give Kirk's 'The Seeker' a spin later.
  22. Did you ever get to your destination with that one spinning? First 2 cassettes I ever got were actually Blue Note/Libertys of 'Sixth Sense' and 'Caramba'. Mail order deletions - someone must have arranged a shipload of them over here from NYC. First Blue Notes I ever saw !
  23. Buy, Buy, Buy ! Two excellent and rare UA albums on there. 'Way, Way Out' (wonderful session with strings) and 'Year of the Iron Sheep', quartet with Jaki Byard plus some other goodish material (previously unreleased) with Byard and John Mancebo Lewis. A very fine twofer ! It is well OOP by the way. It already was when I picked up my own copy. Eventually I came across it, totally unexpected and at discount, at a small shop on the Isle of Guernsey.
  24. Giving the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh Atlantic LP set a spin.
