Quincy Jones 'Birth Of A Band' (Dutch Fontana stereo). Pretty well the same material as on concert 1 (filmed in Belgium) of the 'Jazz Icons' DVD.

The two late 80s/early 90s Blue Notes ('Eternal Spirit' and 'But Not Farewell') are also really good, if you can find them. Both typically thoughtful and somewhat under-rated recordings (featuring Greg Osby and Bobby Hutcherson).

Great little writeup - its been too long (25 years ) since I was last in Paris (driving into town Mitterand's - or was it Giscard's - limo drove past me, no less). Must make plans too to get over there on the Euro-star ! It would be nice to check out Paris Jazz Corner in person too, instead of just the website. The trouble is, I would probably come out of there totally broke..

Just checked the latest (January 2007) brochure and there's a writeup in page 3.

I was interested in the point made in the book that 'Caramba' was the third best selling Lee Morgan Blue Note and even made the R&B charts (high hundreds). Strange that second hand copies of the LP are not so numerous ! For me its one of the best of the later sessions, along with 'Sixth Sense'. Nice mix of groove and adventurous material. I'd tend to agree with the comments about 'Charosma' though. A bit of a 'rote' session.

Major find - looks like the largest neolithic settlement ever found in the UK. Very innocuous spot, if it is next to the 'Woodhenge'. These days the whole of Salisbuty Plain is wind-swept and barren but 5,000 years ago with the milder climate it must have been an Eden.

That's exactly the question that cropped up in my mind from what I read so far. If it was a case of complete loss of teeth then it's incredible that Morgan could recover such technique. Especially in those days before the likes of implants were available.

Looks like Tony Williams 'Million Dollar Legs' will be a shoe-in for this label. Not to mention the Chick Corea 'Smurfs' LP. However if it gives them the working capital to keep the 'real' Mosaic boxes and Selects rolling off the press ad infinitum then I am for it. Especially with all of the current problems at EMI.
