    Eureka - of course ! BFT #43 Disk 1
  4. Sorry to hear that - I can sympathise. Bottom line, no-one was hurt. Isn't it odd how these things always seem to happen on Sundays ?
  5. I'm interested to hear about this one. How much of it does *not* duplicate the giant Mingus Debut box? I hesitated to get it because I wasn't sure there was much that I didn't already have on that one. How is the Mingus Debut box, for that matter? I think that is the only major hole in my Mingus collection. I like it. Debut was Mingus's own label (he operated it with Max Roach), so he had complete control over what he recorded there. He did some very interesting things. I'm particularly fond of the records he made with trombone choir. Mingus had a life-long fondness for trombones, and as an old trombonist, I sorta like that. It's a big box, though--12 cds worth! It's also an older box, so the remastering probably isn't as good as a more recent effort would be, but it sounds good to me, and it has one of those marvelous, big-format Fantasy-Prestige booklets. Essential Mingus for the Mingus-o-phile !
  6. I'm interested to hear about this one. How much of it does *not* duplicate the giant Mingus Debut box? I hesitated to get it because I wasn't sure there was much that I didn't already have on that one. Much of the material is in the 12CD set but there are also things in this box which don't have Mingus in the lineup e.g. a track from Lonnie Levister's unusual orchestral LP and material by Kenny Dorham and John La Porta. The 'duplicate' material is a nice precis of the 12CD set.
  7. John Dankworth Orchestra 'What The Dickens !' (UK Fontana stereo) Kenny Wheeler with John Dankworth Orchestra 'Windmill Tilter' (UK Fontana stereo) Tubby Hayes 'The Orchestra' (UK Fontana stereo)
  8. John Dankworth Orchestra 'The Zodiac Variations' (UK Fontana mono). With Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer etc.
  9. 10. Immediately recognised Clark Terry. It's with Oliver Nelson's Orchestra and is on that Verve 'Jazz Masters' CD compilation I think (and no doubt also the recent Mosaic I guess). Not sure of the tune but definitely Kenny Burrell on guitar. In a word - schmokin ! 11. Piano lead into trombone-heavy front line. Almost Ernie Wilkins-ish arrangement for the Basie trombone section (Grey, Powell etc.) Other than that I haven't a clue ! 12. Accordion lead with a 50s West Coast group. Must be Shorty Rogers on trumpet. Not sure about the accordionist or the album. Interesting ! 13. 'Alf Herbert and the Marijuana Brass' ? It's got to be Bud Shank on one of his World Pacific 60s LPs. Jack Sheldon on trumpet. Star Treck choir on vocals? Liked this one more than I thought I would. 14. Ah - an easier one. Thad & Mel from one of their A&M Horizon LPs ('Live In Munich' I think). This one needs to be back out on CD. Not the greatest of recordings, sounds like it could be Gregory Herbert on tenor. 15. Basie-ish big band with a polished, West Coast feel. Sounds like it could be Phil Woods on lead alto. Live performance - possibly Juggernaut? 16. Another live performance (in Texas?) - Again, I've heard this before. Could it be Carla Bley and cohorts with Carla doing the vocal? Good fun in any case. Many thanks for a fine compilation !
  10. First of all, this is a great little BFT disk - enjoyed it very much. It also had me tearing my hair out because so much of it is familiar and likely in my LP racks but I can't pinpoint it. 1. 'Round Midnight' live performance by tenor plus rhythm section. Tenor player reminds me a bit of Clifford Jordan. 2. Piano trio - very European feel, almost prototype EST. I'm certain I have this in the racks - could it be that Steve Kuhn MPS album with the Scandinavian guys on bass and drums? (Palle Danielsson and Jon Cristiansen are the ones I'm thinking of). The title I think is 'Watch What Happens' but I can't find the damn LP to check it out ! 3. Don't know the track but for sure it's Gary Burton on vibes ! Quite enjoyable. 4. 'I Remember Clifford' - Haven't a clue re: the tenor player or the group. So-so for this one. 5. Lovely piano intro - Hank Jones or Oscar? Trombone feature - whoever it is is playing a huge bore trombone. The technical flurry at the end reminded me a bit of Bill Watrous but I don't think the sound is Bill's. More of a 'mainstream' player. Very faint guitar backing in the background (Herb Ellis?) 6. Must be Sam Rivers on tenor - 'trademark' phrases from him. Isn't this a tune that is also on the 'Fuchsia' album? Not sure about the rest of the band. Sounds like a 70s/early 80s recording. 7. Big band blues with prominent vibes. Again, I'm damn sure I have this one. Teddy Charles Tentet? (sounds like Art Farmer on trumpet). Lovely stuff. 8. 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again' - Sounds very much like Dave Brubeck with some Ahmad Jamal-ish inflections. Not over-sold on this one. 9. Very nice straight-ahaid guitar with trio in a Wes Montgomery style. My first reaction was to suggest Emily Remler but on second thoughts it sounds more like Louis Stewart. Fine performance with an interesting chord progression.
  11. Ronnie Ross - 'Cleopatra's Needle' (UK Fontana stereo)
  12. Organic white tea with natural blackcurrent flavour. Next up - Nettle tea.
  13. Awesome - almost like Candid-period Cecil Taylor.
  14. Just got my dental implant put in - went better than I could ever of expected (although they seemed to be using the mother of Black-and-Decker drill bits at one stage ). Just a bit of jaw swelling after the 'op', easily remidied with pain killers and cold packs. As long as you get a good surgeon and the pre-surgery assessment goes OK, I recommend this treatment. The only inconvenience is no hot food or dairy products for 5 days and stitches in situ for 10 days. Can handle that !
  15. A very rare 'New York Press-ing'
  16. Miles Davis Horace Silver Hank Mobley Wayne Shorter Don Rendell & Ian Carr John Coltrane
  17. To paraphrase Dr. Johnson - "A man who is tired of the Jazztet Mosaic is tired of life.." That Capitol Set is a good one. I have it on vinyl so will prise it off the shelf (with fork lift truck) later.
  18. 'The Debut Records Story' (4CDs) will be doing its thing at my place this weekend. Nice supplement to the big Mingus set and dirt cheap courtesy of zweitausendeins.
  19. Ingrid Laubrock gets my vote. Great player too !
  20. Doesn't Billy sing on Donald Byrd's "Slow Drag"? luca Yep, on the title track. Very cool and quite hilarious it is too !
  21. Certainly is ! I find myself digging into this set on a regular basis, so much great stuff in there. Apart from the obvious like 'Power To The People' and the Lighthouse stuff with Woody Shaw there's gems such as 'Black Narcissus', the Luis Gasca latin material ( ) and the guest slots with Flora Purim. Still one of my favourite boxes and I've had this one for well over 10 years.
  22. A belated very happy Birthday !
  23. It got me - and it took 2 weeks to recover from it. The worst bit was all the joint pains..
  24. Listenable? Just spinning Joe Farrell 'Sonic Text' (Contemporary)
