  1. He was in fairly rough shape but it didn't affect the music or his playing. My memories of 2 consecutive nights at Ronnie Scotts during Summer of 1980 are getting hazy these days but seem to recall him being assisted to the piano on at least one occasion and it could have been by Helen Keane. Listening to the Mosaic vinyl brought back vividly the intimacy of the gig and of the repertoire of that time. On one of those nights there were only 15 or so fans left in the audience for the 1am late show and you could get seated right up front. Almost like a private recital. His playing was significantly better on the late shows.
  2. Many thanks ! Those Jasmine reissues are great. And they don't cost £1k a pop like some of the originals.
  3. Wow - didn't realise that this one was also out on vinyl.
  4. Yep - and it can be very annoying ! The problem seemed to start from the late 60s Liberty era onwards - some of those 'Division of Liberty Records' pressings can be particularly prone. It's a shame BN didn't continue using Plastylite right through to the 70s.
  5. Hope they don't head inland ! Batten Down The Hatches
  6. John Surman composed and performed in tandem with a French dance company back in the 1970s I believe - not sure if it was ballet.
  7. Arrived today? Good listening! MG Thanks ! So far through to disk 3 and there's some stunning playing on there. Just spinning disk 1 of the Joe Pass. Malcolm Addey has done another great mastering job and the music is great too. Two excellent sets !
  8. At least the title of the LP and the artist name are both visible. Jeez - can it get worse?
  9. The Amazing Randi The Amazing Mets Amazing Grace Gracie Fields Joe Fields WC Fields
  10. Related to the Prince of Darkness?
  11. Same thing happened to me. Liberty mono copy in shrink-wrap that had apparently sat in a cupboard somewhere in the States for eons before being bought by a London store dealer.
  12. So how is the 'Prairie Dog'? Picked up the 'Dedication' CD not too long ago - I'd held off that one for quite some time. Well worth getting hold of IMO - there's always something of interest in all of the DP sessions that I have come across.
  13. Lots of Stitt on the go amongst the board membership at the moment. Just spinning disk 1 with the Johnny Richards material. So far this set is a winner ! Will follow up with some Joe Pass.
  14. That's my favourite of the Mulgrew Novus albums. A very good one ! I caught the band with Wallace Roney and Steve Nelson when they were touring this material back in 91/92ish. Good, thoughful compositions and a class band.
  15. I got a copy some years ago for £5 (blue cover) and have yet to read it !
  16. They seem to be taking a while to get over the Atlantic at the moment Clunky but don't worry, I'm sure it will turn up. Just been notified that my Stitt and Pass are at a main branch P.O. on the South Coast via Sweden with some customs to pay ( ) but at least I should be able to pick them up tonight. It'll be a Stitt-tensive weekend..
  17. What's a Scorpio reissue? MG I think it's one of those current US BN vinyl reissues that you see a lot of in the shops over here for £10.99 or thereabouts. Never heard one though.
  18. One of the few brass players to find great inspiration in and to build positively and individually on the legacy of Booker Little ! Still playing very nicely at NorthSea this year, in tandem with Norma Winstone. Hope they tour the UK again soon.
  19. Wynton Kelly 'Kelly Blue' (Riverside stereo)
  20. Sad news. Saw him just the once with Mingus Dynasty and he held the fort pretty well indeed. RIP.
  21. Wonder when they're due back? Preserved finds of trees, protected by sediment, are not uncommon finds by divers along areas of the South Coast, providing evidence of this ancient land bridge. In fact certain areas such as Isle of Wight were connected by land bridge until much more recently, I believe.
  22. Interesting... surely not TP originals in mint? Very scanty information, suspect these must be TPs of Classic reissues, perhaps? A few photos would have helped in the listing. Anyway, I'm broke.
  23. Scorpio Killer Frank Serpico Al Pacino Al Porcino Don Rader Bill Chase
  24. Yep Daniel, I don't think this one had 'ear'. My 84231 is NY USA but no ear, hence from the 'Liberty' period. Sounds pretty nice tho'
