  1. Mine’s arrived - sounding on the whole pretty good, considering the circumstances. Really like the way that Elvin’s drums are captured. Shame that Coltrane in particular is so off-mike though.
  2. Sold to me ! Thanks for the clarifications - a no-brainier when it hits the street. I’m sure it will be brilliant. I love those old ‘Jazz Today’, ‘Sounds of Jazz’ and ‘Jazz in Britain’ shows and it is always good to hear Peter Clayton, Charles Fox et al, guys who really knew their stuff when it came to jazz of that era and who weren’t BS-ing with trendy pontifications. Never got to hear enough of these shows back in the day. If I remember right, ‘Jazz Today’ interfered with school hours and ‘Jazz In Britain’ went out at some god-forsaken hour when everyone was fast asleep ! Additional plus - the BBC FM stereo transmissions when recorded reel to reel sound pretty damn good. That was the case with the BT box so no doubt will apply too here.
  3. Thanks ! Will be happy with the CD.
  4. Talking of Mosaic ‘slicks’, I’ve got the Larry Young Complete Blue Note cover framed on one of my walls. One framing project still to complete is of a Coleman Hawkins French LP that I was meaning to put up. It is signed on the front by Hawk, Roy Haynes and Jimmy Jones - during one of their early 50s Paris visits.
  5. Yes, listening to that Australian broadcast, sensational was the word. Might even prefer it to the original ! How is the vinyl? Optimal pressing, presumably ?
  6. My CD of this one is out for delivery tomorrow. Bundled in a spare and super-cheap 2CD copy of Tubby Hayes ‘Grits’.
  7. Latest Trunk 2CD compilation. Plenty of jazz - rare Mark Murphy, Karin Krog (with Don Ellis !), Michael Garrick, Kenny Graham, Dudley Moore, Basil Kirchin....and Mike and Bernie Winters.
  8. The drummer looks like Chris Karan.
  9. Good read. I remember seeing that mid 70s Humph band with Bruce Turner, Mike Pyne and - with relevance to this thread - Kathy Stobart. Ms Stobart was very impressive on both tenor and baritone. Mike Pyne playing cornet on a feature rings a bell too. I’d forgotten that.
  10. Good that Mr Abate is back in his second home. Things must be starting to normalise. Mr Barnes is in this neck of the woods with Dave Newton and Art Themen I think in the not too distant future so I think I feel a gig is imminent.
  11. I’m sure I would have remembered if Walter Bishop Jr had been with Woody when I him but don’t think he was. First time seeing Woody in 1978 it was Lyle Mays. I saw him again at Ronnies in 1980/81 (a performance which was live televised) but can’t recall who was on piano.
  12. Hails from Devon I think. As does another fine altoist - Roz Harding, featured in current Mike Westbrook groups. Roz’s dad used to sell me LPs.
  13. Dizzy Gillespie, mid 1970s? i think I’ve seen May too but for the life of my can’t recall who with. It wasn’t in the UK though.
  14. Alas no (and not a ‘London type’) but I’m hoping that their deferred Swanage Fest slot is rescheduled for 2022. That should be a blast ! Even better if they make it West of Heathrow even sooner.
  15. Yes, it was an amazing coincidence that they were filming at the time of that one-off concert. Garrick’s liturgical works remain unique and undervalued ! Face not clear on the film but it must be a young John Marshall on the drums and I assume Coleridge Goode is on bass.
  16. Indeed they are !
  17. £70 on Amazon UK, which is roughly the same as the Barbara Thompson set. Having missed most of these broadcasts the first time round, it will be great to finally get to hear them.
  18. There’s a whole load of really excellent players over here not yet mentioned - who are not improv but more mainstream jazz. Trish Clowes, Amy Roberts, Laura Jurd, Tori Freestone, Kate Williams and Karen Sharpe come immediately to mind.
  19. Good stuff ! For a long time (at least since the 70s) Garner’s music wasn’t exactly overflowing in the racks here. I only recall that Savoy double LP ‘The Elf’ in addition to the omnipresent Columbia Concert by the Sea. I guess his manager Martha Glasser must have put the kibosh on things. Amazing to see that they have included a cassette in the package. It will be wire tape recordings next !
  20. I thought 12 CDs of the Barbara Thompson material would be too much but the box has been on very regular repeat play on my player, all of it. Musical quality and sonics very impressive so if the Nucleus is comparable it will be a no-brainier. If, like the Thompson the sources are good reel to reel from BBC stereo FM then it should be great. Not to mention that Roger F. Is doing the notes !
  21. I see the 12LP version seems to have become available to N. America purchasers through Amazon at a reduced price of $250. Apparently...
  22. Another essential purchase by the looks of it.
