  1. Part of the appeal was that they were ‘2 for the price of 1’. A not inconsiderable factor back in the early/mid 70s when they started to appear. Over here it was the Fantasy/Prestige/Milestone series originally, then Columbia, Vogue Jazz Doubles and UA/Blue Note got in on the act. I have dozens and dozens of them and still pick the occasional one up to fill gaps.
  2. CD1 Una Mas - rarely sounded better.
  3. This one again - an important release for this band and a bit of a revelation !
  4. Sounding very Horace-Silver Quintetish in parts
  5. Great compilation.
  6. I wish they would do a Tone Poet of that one !
  7. That should be a good one - his latest album sounds strong. Coming up at Scott’s in London soon too.
  8. He must have been stocking up pre-gig with provisions at the Tesco on Camden High Street !
  9. Last disk of this great box, recorded at Marlow Football Club !
  10. This is very sad news, especially so as he was still active musically. It was around 2003-4 that I got to see him at the Jazz Cafe in London with Lou Donaldson. Very glad that I did. RIP, sorry that he is no longer with us. One memory implanted in my mind is of him coming through the main door into the gig with a couple of Tesco carrier bags. Surreal. Also the beaming face of Steve Winwood stood next to me digging Lonnie’s playing.
  11. Bought that from Mole in the deletions rack over 40 years ago ! I have that one but find it a bit over-sickly with the souped-up synth, I’m afraid. Correction to say I’m thinking of ‘Sweet and Lovely’.
  12. Lee Morgan ‘Complete Live at the Lighthouse’ LP 6. One of these days I’ll get round to LPs 7 to 12 !
  13. Saw him solo on one occasion. Still playing great back then !
  14. Those Hutcherson Columbias seem to have passed me by too. Never heard them.
  15. Didn’t try them. Nice concept though ! (i’m assuming they had pies - certainly plenty of coffee and cakes). The ‘Quiet Kenny’ sounds fantastic on first listen, very big sound. Certainly trounces my OJC so the hype is justified in this case.
  16. salvaged today from a ‘pie and vinyl’ emporium, obviously overlooked in the racks. Minor miracle !
  17. Yes, Van also has a home in the Frome area I think. Pee Wee was patron of Bristol’s Jazz and Blues Festival and usually put in an appearance with his band.
  18. Sad to report that saxophonist/arranger/bandleader Pee Wee Ellis has just passed away. For many years he has lived here in the UK in the Frome, Somerset area in the SW of England, active in and very supportive of the local scene and will be very much missed. RIP.
  19. Working my way through the Clifford Jordan box. Too bad there weren’t any more Strata-East big boxes.
  20. I sure miss Cedar Walton’s annual weekly visits to Ronnie Scott’s from back in the day ! Been listening to some of those ‘Magic Triangle’ releases over the past few days. That Walton/Higgins combination was unbeatable.
  21. Good soundtrack album.
  22. Heck, at the time this CD came out (mid 90s) I was just glad to see the music out on CD. Herbie could have appeared in a Batman suit for all I cared..
  23. Still very much active, playing with style/power and hitting the high notes. I was impressed !
