  1. UK United Artists
  2. More byeways of Herbie. From the Big Box.
  3. These guys (different ‘East’ though). And this one..
  4. Also one by Mel Torme at this obscure venue I think.
  5. Just spinning that one. ‘Daffodils’ Rare example of a US Blue Note on UK Vogue. 10” LP from 1955.
  6. You are missing out on that Nathan Davis - it is very good ! Of course, it is a shame that it has not been put out on CD - or download. Personally I am more than happy that they are giving us the vinyl option, for those of us who have a strong preference for it given the setup that we have. Long may it last !
  7. Cheesy and sleazy !
  8. That one needs its own lifting and handling jig !
  9. Mono NY label, ear.
  10. I have that one on a blue label. Obviously a fan of Harold Wilson. Nimbus 3LP. Just in from Barcelona. A bit wild but good stuff !
  11. I remember reading Philip Larkin’s book of Daily Telegraph jazz reviews back in the 70s and really enjoying it. It gave some good pointers, was a highly entertaining read and the stuff he slagged off (e.g. Miles and Coltrane) was an indication to check it out. Many of the issues were even then already deleted though. The Max Harrison et al ‘Essential Jazz Records Vol 2’ was the go-to bible as well. Again, frustrating as much of it was deleted at the time.
  12. Wasn’t it Phil who was phoned up when on the air by Miles Davis during the Miles reclusive lay-off period? I think the ‘Miles Ahead’ film covered it.
  13. Mine is 766 (shame it isn’t 666). That is interesting concerning the Amazon UK fulfilment. No mention of it coming in for distribution from the US, might have been Europe. From the Hoffmann Board it would seem that not all Amazon UK preorders were fulfilled. Seemed pricey at the time but maybe I got a bargain?
  14. Sorry to hear this sad news, RIP. I tuned into his weekend show a couple of times when driving in NYC and found it entertaining and informative. Friends to jazz like Phil are hard to replace. Hope the tapes and archives get recovered and stored OK.
  15. In contrast, I enjoyed it. Maybe Wild Bill isn’t to everyone’s taste and the playing time is a bit short. UK Verve mono sound quality on my copy is good though.
  16. I remember buying this one that year on CBS, with its late appearance by Eddie Jefferson - and enjoying it. For me though, the release year was dominated by those Blue Note/UA ‘Jazz File’ releases.
  17. Pure Pleasure LP. Better than the real thing !
  18. Great memories of seeing Mnsr Solal, both times in Bath. Total class ! Sorry that we will not get the chance here to see him again.
  19. Indeed, it was a surprise just how strong many of these alternate takes are. The whole thing is musically very strong and probably my favourite ‘live’ box set since the Miles Plugged Nickel. Some great live releases of late, taking into account the recent Roy Brooks as well. I’ve hardly touched the surface of that one yet and I need to put that right !
  20. Yes, ‘in your face’ is a quality I would also offer up for the sound on the LP version but in a good way. Has presence and immediacy.
