  1. I saw Joanne at the old ‘Cafe des Copains’ in Toronto and she was brilliant. I think it was with bassist Don Thompson and tenorist Pat LaBarbera. My guests were very impressed too and they weren’t into jazz.
  2. Looks like there is a 6LP box of the Complete Ornette Coleman on Blue Note in the works (6 Tone Poets). At least according to one Dutch vinyl shop..
  3. Superb ! Excellent performance, well recorded and in a great atmosphere. Several of us on the board were patrons for that release.
  4. Mike W. hates it ! Personally, it is one of my favourites from him.
  5. Tigon. I have the film on HDD from a TV recording. Rare musical outing for the Ondes Martenot.
  6. I have this two LPs ready for spinning on or around the 31st
  7. Very true. They certainly made/make sense in Canada - saved freezing to death in the transit between shops. A whole alternative universe in fact ! Having said that, I lost my car in those places on at least one occasion, necessitating a search circuit or two.
  8. Cracking open this 20LP behemoth..
  9. And added bonus - often with very good new sleeve notes.
  10. Part of the appeal was that they were ‘2 for the price of 1’. A not inconsiderable factor back in the early/mid 70s when they started to appear. Over here it was the Fantasy/Prestige/Milestone series originally, then Columbia, Vogue Jazz Doubles and UA/Blue Note got in on the act. I have dozens and dozens of them and still pick the occasional one up to fill gaps.
  11. CD1 Una Mas - rarely sounded better.
  12. This one again - an important release for this band and a bit of a revelation !
  13. Sounding very Horace-Silver Quintetish in parts
  14. Great compilation.
  15. I wish they would do a Tone Poet of that one !
  16. That should be a good one - his latest album sounds strong. Coming up at Scott’s in London soon too.
  17. He must have been stocking up pre-gig with provisions at the Tesco on Camden High Street !
  18. Last disk of this great box, recorded at Marlow Football Club !
  19. This is very sad news, especially so as he was still active musically. It was around 2003-4 that I got to see him at the Jazz Cafe in London with Lou Donaldson. Very glad that I did. RIP, sorry that he is no longer with us. One memory implanted in my mind is of him coming through the main door into the gig with a couple of Tesco carrier bags. Surreal. Also the beaming face of Steve Winwood stood next to me digging Lonnie’s playing.
  20. Bought that from Mole in the deletions rack over 40 years ago ! I have that one but find it a bit over-sickly with the souped-up synth, I’m afraid. Correction to say I’m thinking of ‘Sweet and Lovely’.
  21. Lee Morgan ‘Complete Live at the Lighthouse’ LP 6. One of these days I’ll get round to LPs 7 to 12 !
  22. Saw him solo on one occasion. Still playing great back then !
