  1. I remember reading a report back in 1976/77 I think of an on-stage bust up between Shaw and Junior Cook when the Hayes/Shaw/Cook group was playing a season in Ronnie Scott’s. I think the group split after that. The report was in Melody Maker.
  2. Fantastic - I’ll be in for this one. Big fan of the Barbara Thompson box that Repertoire have put out.
  3. Very limited 10” Basil Kirchin reissue from Trunk Records. Please let us know what you think !
  4. Not a reissue but some amazing film footage from French TV who just happened to be in St Pauls Cathedral when Michael Garrick was performing and recording his ‘Jazz Praises’. Jazz Praises From St Pauls Looks like Ian Carr, Art Themen and Jim Philip in the front line. Garrick must be on the organ. From the intro it looks like INA may have provided this rare footage to the BBC for possible use in the 2005 documentaries. Incredible !
  5. A high point of the old Bracknell Festival.
  6. Yes, a very good release, one of his best I think. There was a Tippett Tribute night in Bristol a week ago, sadly didn’t get to see it. I believe that Julie Tippetts did a reprise of the vocal on this album. More memories of seeing Koko Taylor with Buddy Guy also on the bill. It was in Toronto - Horseshoe Tavern I think. Raucous night !
  7. Good memories of seeing Bertha H with Walter Booker, Roni Ben-Hur and Leroy Williams back in the day.
  8. I saw him at least once - George Coleman’s Octet comes to mind, where the saxes also included Frank Strozier and Mario Rivera. An impressively fast player as I recall and the comparison with Hayes is not unreasonable. Tubby was more lyrical though. Isn’t that another of those Les Tomkins recordings? Great box !
  9. He was in very, very good form in mid 1980, albeit visibly looking in terrible shape. Mind over matter, really.
  10. 300 Euros ? Strewth..
  11. Miles in early 1990 was the best I heard him in that whole comeback period (the other times being 1982 and 1985).
  12. Well ........ he just does !
  13. I saw Joanne at the old ‘Cafe des Copains’ in Toronto and she was brilliant. I think it was with bassist Don Thompson and tenorist Pat LaBarbera. My guests were very impressed too and they weren’t into jazz.
  14. Looks like there is a 6LP box of the Complete Ornette Coleman on Blue Note in the works (6 Tone Poets). At least according to one Dutch vinyl shop..
  15. Superb ! Excellent performance, well recorded and in a great atmosphere. Several of us on the board were patrons for that release.
  16. Mike W. hates it ! Personally, it is one of my favourites from him.
  17. Tigon. I have the film on HDD from a TV recording. Rare musical outing for the Ondes Martenot.
  18. I have this two LPs ready for spinning on or around the 31st
  19. Very true. They certainly made/make sense in Canada - saved freezing to death in the transit between shops. A whole alternative universe in fact ! Having said that, I lost my car in those places on at least one occasion, necessitating a search circuit or two.
  20. Cracking open this 20LP behemoth..
  21. And added bonus - often with very good new sleeve notes.
