  1. Bud Powell 'The Vintage Years' (UK Verve 60s compilation)
  2. The original LP by the way was on Hot House Records, a spin off from the now lamented Mole Jazz London shop.
  3. I operate Naim Audio pre and power amps with Dynaudio Contour speakers. Works well !
  4. Graham Collier Sextet 'Down Another Road' (Fontana stereo). With Harry Beckett, Karl Jenkins etc.
  5. There's a post on AAJ that states that pianist John Hicks has very sadly just passed away in NYC. I've seen no other confirmation of this so can't substantiate further. If it is true then my thoughts go out to his family. RIP.
  6. John Dankworth Orchestra 'Zodiac Variations' (Fontana mono). With Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, Phil Woods, Zoot Sims.
  7. Ask Sidewinder to tell you about his Esquire pressing of that one... pretty hip! Unfortunately I don't have a scan of it but it has a nice charcoal portrait of Lady Day by what must have been a very young John Marshall ! Strangely though the LP is under Paul Quinichette's name ('with Webster Young') - Quinichette probably had higher UK prifile at the time of release. Now spinning Paul Gonsalves 'Humming Bird' (Deram stereo)
  8. There is a whole 'cult' around that one. Must be about the rarest item on Vocalion.
  9. Great, I hope this is true. Haven't heard anything further though.
  10. Are you talking the original LP or the Connoisseur LP? I had the original LP and I agree that the CD sounds much better. However, I read somewhere that the Connoisseur LP sounds good and I've been looking for a copy for quite a while to see if this is true. You can save me further searching if you're saying it's not worth it. Kevin Good point, thanks. I'd forgotten that I have a copy of the 'Wally' Conn LP in my racks (amazing how these things get lost/forgotten about) so will retrieve it later today and check out the sound. I'd love to hear the Japanese issue King LP of this session (probably definitive).
  11. The Miles Live '75 from the nickel and dime store. Wow !
  12. The CD definitely sounds better than the 'Rainbow Series' LP. Not one of the greatest recordings sound quality wise , I'm afraid, in either version. The music though is - very much in a 'Sonny's Dream - Birth of the New Cool' vein.
  13. Another 'future project' for my list... Anyone notice that Miles quotes 'Hello This is Joni' in the middle of Maiysha?
  14. Just listening to the first track of this gem. I agree that the sound is great and the band is absolutely on fire. Now if only there was some nice Japanese psychodelic day-glo UFO/angel cover art to go with it !
  15. Got this one on my radar too. Looks great !
  16. Anything from Lonnie Smith's 'Think' would be a good choice, also how about some George Braith? (perhaps a track from 'Two Souls In One').
  17. 'Peter Burman's Jazz Tete a Tete' (UK Columbia Lansdowne mono). With Johnny Scott's Quintet, Bill LeSage, Shake Keane. Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland 'The Golden Eight' (BN NY USA mono)
  18. Great place for jazz. I worked there for several months on assignment and ended up eating out and seeing jazz just about every night. The choice available and standard of performance was excellent. Not to mention the climate. Would drive me nuts living there tho'
  19. Art Blakey 'The Jazz Messengers At Cafe Bohemia Vol 2' (BN 47W63rd DG mono)
  20. By some strange quirk I have the Mosaic LPs, the Blue Note CD box and the Mosaic CDs. Picked up the Mosaic CD box for £10 in a second-hand shop, couldn't resist it. Box a little bit worn though. Sound on the Mosaic CDs is pretty nice.
  21. Just come back from seeing Lee Konitz with superb young Brit pianist Gilwyn Simcox and his trio. For the second half, Lawrence Cottle's big band with a fine, impromptu turn by vocalist Claire Martin. Great night ! Tristano/Konitz/Marsh Mosaic LPs will be on deck tomorrow.
  22. I will put money on it that Plastylite Blue Note pressings will last 1000 years !
  23. That Herbie Nichols booklet by Mosaic is their greatest ever - along with the Dean Benedetti. Essential !
  24. Weird - 'Topic Starter' on this thread seems to have been erased from the 'New Posts'. Has Jazzbo been made a non-person or something?
