  1. Oh yeah--previously, Kenny Dorham, "Trompeta Toccata" Blue/white liberty as well. Does it _get_ any better than Mamacita?
  2. Lee Morgan, "The Gigolo" Blue/White Liberty. What a terrific record! Lee and Wayne are on FIRE on this one!
  3. Almost missed the party! Happy birthday, Patricia, and many many more! Cheers! PJ
  4. Good luck to you, Tim--I don't live out east any longer, but it's nice to see anything that can help spread the music!
  5. Happy birthday, 7/4!
  6. Descent into Philadelphia from San Jose, Costa Rica. Came in from the north, along the Delaware river, and got caught in the jetwash of a DC-10 that we were too close to. The plane banked to the left (where I was sitting at the window seat), so I was looking straight down at the Delaware, and suddenly dropped--I don't know, 100, 200 feet? I was scared shitless, thought it was over...and thanks to that, often use valium when I fly!
  7. Happy birthday, Jeff! I miss you, my friend! Cheers, PJ
  8. First record in 2006: Lee Morgan, Cornbread. (my attempt to make 2006 a wee bit better than 2005!) Cheers, mates!
  9. Dexter Gordon - Go NY USA stereo--wiiiiiiide separation!
  10. I have a copy on order...perhaps someone who has a contact can point her to this thread? It would be interesting to engage in dialogue with her, if she's interested...
  11. A quiet dinner at a restaurant a block away with three friends at nine o'clock; Back to the apartment for plenty o' red wine, old vinyl, and watching the fireworks from the deck. What could be better? Happy new year!
  12. Art Blakey, self titled (a/k/a "Moanin'") 47 w 63rd mono. One of my most prized records!
  13. I think I'm going to be able to make this work. There are some good deals on northwest airlines right now. A few questions--who's got info about the following: 1) I know less than nothing about Detroit. Should I stay near Baker's? Alternatively, where should I stay? 2) To/from the airport: rent a car vs. public transportation 3) RECORD SHOPPING, of course 4) Who else from the board is goin' to the hit? Interested in dinner? Breakfast the next day? Post or PM with any info ya got! Thanks!
  14. I did--twice! Lucky bastid!
  15. Cool site! SS1, did you add yourself to the "register" (pun intended)?
  16. Ho hum, another boring month in New York...McLean, Shorter, Henderson, Lateef...been there, done that...
  17. I mean, DAMN! Did any board members attend any of these sets? If so, what was it like?
  18. Oh my god, this music is amazing. I can't get enough of it. Such bass, such a groove, such an ensemble. It's weird...I was never able to get into Live Evil, or the Fillmore sessions, or even (gasp) Bitches Brew, but after listening though the Cellar Door sessions, I brought those down off the shelf and...well, I get it. I don't know how or why, but I get it. I completely get how this isn't for everyone (although I'm straining to get "mediocre," but different strokes), but damn. TIGHT!
  19. Happy birthday! Hope you can have a ride in something vintage this year, such as:
  20. Ordered Tolliver tonight--should go nicely with the Carmell, Andrew, and Dex sets I've gotten from that series. (and a nice contrast to the Cellar Door sessions!)
  21. Mine arrived today after a short vacation in Hodgkins, Illinois. Have to echo what Lon said. I'm only one disc in so far, but man--this is some really really killer stuff. I think I can honestly say that, other than cranking "On the Corner" or something, I've never really quite heard anything like this. I don't know why, but Live Evil never moved me; not sure whether it was the splicing (although after hearing this "raw" I wonder if that would make me crazy (or if I'd even hear it, really)) or muddy sound, or what, but that one sat in the shelves. This will not sit in the shelves! Such a tight damn groove! Exuberance! Could I listen to all six discs at one sitting? Initially, I thought "no way"...but no "beat" fatigue so far! And again, a hearty to CDU for honoring the pre-sale price. I'm thrilled to have this in my collection!
  22. Whoa...what a choice...Bobby? McCoy?? Thelonious??? Damn...those were some _times_! Thanks a lot, kh1958--I appreciate it! Bobby Timmons at Boomer's Zoot Sims Quartet at the Half Note McCoy Tyner Quintet at Slug's Thelonious Monk at the Village Vanguard (isn't this near the end of his public performances?).
  23. But do you like doobie in your funk? Hoh!!!
