  1. Well, it is something most of us can find in our neighborhoods...
  2. The only way to really solve this problem is to go right to its core and ban the penis.
  3. I just got the two disc set from Amazon for slightly north of $20.
  4. It really says something that the tiny, dilapidated space on Bowery that was once CBGB's is on the market for over $30,000/month. Places like Tonic and the Stone (and even Iridium, which I do enjoy on the rare occassions they get a show I'm interested in) are really miracles these days.
  5. Then how about Denardo? Is that a common name anywhere? It seems to be a very common Italian last name, but I've never heard of it as a first name except for Ornette's son.
  6. They kicked me out for loudly explaining how the water appeared to flow uphill. In retrospect, I guess I deserved it (I was 18 or something).
  7. I think this may be his best movie, which is saying a lot given that Eraserhead is one of my all-time favorites. I can't wait for the DVD. I also don't find the movie all that "challenging". It is a nightmare on film and as such follows the logic of dreams. As in a dream, sometimes things make have obvious meanings (such as the rabbit/Alice in Wonderland references in the film) and sometimes they don't. But if you just let it be what it is without trying to impose a hard and fast story line on it, it is an incredible artistic achievement, IMO. Oh, and Laura Dern was incredible.
  8. I'm really curious to see if Cecil Taylor has anything interesting to say at J@LC next month. It will be my first time going.
  9. And according to Wiki at least, they were both listed as "Theloins" in the US Census. I wonder if there was a literacy problem or simply confusion on the part of the people filling out the forms here.
  10. Yes. He was named after his father. Frankly, I never really considered Ornette an unusual name, though upon further consideration I am hard pressed to think of other Ornettes. Maybe it just sounds so much like a first name to me that it never struck me as unusual.
  11. One of my best friends in high school was named Mose. As far as I know, he wasn't named after Alison.
  12. Booby. (Sorry, couldn't help myself.)
  13. Or Miles, for that matter.
  14. There aren't a whole lot of Djangos out there, are there?
  15. I'm out of control. The seven Ellington OJCs that I didn't already have. The three Yusef OJCs that I didn't already have. Pepper Adams 10 to 4 at the 5 Spot. Don Ellis - New Ideas and How Time Passes. Jimmy Woods - Conflict.
  16. Great set and great price. I have to admit that I actually prefer the longbox version of these sets. They keep the CDs in better condition and the books are easier to read. The metal spine versions look cool on the shelf, though.
  17. The new Musée at Quai Branly is quite something. Problem is that if you are on a quick visit, there is always a crowd waiting to get inside and it may take some time before you can enter the place. The Louvre is always very highly recommended. Problem there is that there is so much to see. I would suggest you check at the Musee du Louvre site and select a specific area you want to visit! Also take in consideration that a number of Louvre sections are open only on selected days. There is also the Centre Pompidou which is also worth spending time in. Beside their regular exhibitions, they have now a Yves Klein retrospective which is absorbing. The Pompidou Center is also celebrating its 40th anniversay and it's pretty crowded on weekends! And may I suggest spending time at the Musée Marmottan with its glorious paintings by Claude Monet! A bit less crowded than the other institutions. There are museums in Paris?
  18. Very true, and the tune itself is quite catchy. Didn't he lose all the royalties on that song to Jorge Ben after being sued for lifting the main riff?
  19. I finally got my refund for the Miles Davis Blackhawk set yesterday - though they did not refund the marginal cost of the expedited shipping.
  20. Don't overlook Portland, OR. They love their music out there, and they are usually passed up by traveling acts, so when one drops in town they tend to turn out. I haven't been there in a while so I can't recommend a particular club, but I could ask people in the know if you are interested.
  21. I love Sabbath, but I have to admit that the more I study Hendrix (through my guitar lessons) the more I've come to the conclusion that Sabbath really just lifted all the least interesting/easiest to play parts from his songs*. But Sabbath was the first band I really got into (at five years old, no less), so I can't help but love them. I was suspended from first grade for a day or two for drawing their logo on my homework. They called in my mother to discuss my alleged Santanist interests (dude, I was six!). *I would say the same about the White Stripes and Zeppelin, but that would be getting off topic. Oops, too late .
  22. Miles Davis/John Coltrane Columbia box (a few years too late) Django in Rome JSP box Jelly Roll JSP box Mingus - Mysterious Blues (Candid) Cecil Taylor - NYC RNB And I still haven't gotten through the Cellar Door box or the Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia box. BTW, if anyone is looking for that now OOP Holiday box, J&R has one left on the shelf for the relatively good price of $150. Unfortunately, it looks like it has been dropped on the floor from about six feet once or a dozen times, but it is sealed and you're hard pressed to beat the price.
  23. I've been told that my Rotel amp is too bright, that my speakers lack bass, that my cd player is so-so, and that my interconnects and speaker cable are overpriced, but DAMN my system sounds good to me and all who have been over to hear it... not saying anyone doesn't know what they are talking about, but this sort of thing largely comes down to 1) what you like and 2) what you are used to. I'm not even trying to say that their are or aren't "right" and "wrong" in this area (I think we can all agree on certain "wrongs," for instance), just that these things are really complex and unfortunately you ultimately just have to hook everything up and see if you like the sound or not. I guess this is a fairly trivial and useless statement that belongs in the "drunk" thread if anywhere, but I've spent the energy typing it out so I guess I won't delete it now.
  24. Well, I'm feeling pretty good right about now...
  25. I guess I'm going to have to spend a little more time with the Blackburn disc. I've listened to it a couple times and just thought it was okay.
