Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
LAL replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Gene Krupa/Harry James Mosaic - disc 7 ~ Starting this set from the last disc. Some nice Ernie Wilkins & Neal Hefti arrangements. The James' band sound a little like the Basie new testament. -
LF: Lionel Hampton Complete Quartets

This U.S online retailer has a copy. You may want to get it from them. I've been ordering literally every alternate week from these guys (bas***ds!!) for the past 5 months. Price has been upped a bit recently. -
This makes for a total of EIGHT unopened Mosaics from three months ago? Surprised to see this thread re surface... Just a point on unopened Mosaics. It seems lately their QC hasn't been as good as usual. I ordered a Select Paul Chambers for a friend, and the booklets were incorrect.. two for disc #2, missing disc booklet #3 Worse though, My Jackie McClean set.. I had single BN discs of this and it was a while before I realised that the mosaic had been sent with two discs #2.. Disc #3 was missing. By the time I contacted Mosaic, it was too late to get a replacement. A funny one from years ago was the Monk Black Lion.. the music was distinctly not Monk.. it turned out that the disc manufacturer had put Mosaic labels on some Erroll Garners ( I think they were Old Savoy recordings.. very bad sound). This had not happened to the whole Monk batch, just part of it.. Obviously Mosaic put it right.. but had I not checked the discs I might have been stuck up in Erroll's room.... Most of the serious errors like the recent Farmer / Golson set get caught and taken care of, but individual packaging errors like above can be overlooked if you don't inspect your sets. I would recommend checking your sets on reciept for errors such as these. Thanks for the warnings PDEE. Looks like I gotta take some time off to check those sets. The only issue I've had so far is with the labelling misprint on disc 5 of the Herman Capitol but a replacement disc was already inserted in the box.

I have a question. I'm not in the U.S but intend to sign up with the BMG Club using a relative's address in the U.S. Question is, are they likely to 'bombard' the relative with promotion pamphlets, CDs etc after delivering the first order? Particularly concerned about the unsolicited CDs. Thanks in advance!

Some lengthy tracks in here but Box has a nice furry feel too.

Penguin 7th ed.
LAL replied to clandy44's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Based on an online 4 star/crown list, this must be the Kid Thomas/George Lewis Ragtime Stompers disc on GHB. A crown you say? I don't have that one in the collection, yet. Must get it now. -
Penguin 7th ed.

Stopped looking at my 3rd edition for a couple of years and then decided to pick it up again a few months back for no particular reason. Lo and behold, I discovered they have some decent reviews of many N.O revival recordings which AMG totally omits . I find myself referring to the book quite often now. Perhaps I should pick up the latest edition. -
Yes but only after I bought a couple of duplicates last year. Now all Classics discs are listed in a notebook which is referred to before making any new purchases. Have all the Duke Neatworks. Didn't really need Vol.1 but got it for the sake of "completeness".

This disc is highly recommended for his later work and has Hawk in the lineup. ...and the music of Luis Russell's band is just wonderful, uplifted no doubt by Red's playing.

Methinks you need to get the Bird set now to be cured of this oompa malady. :rsly:
-
Have about 100, 70% of which are Duke, Artie Shaw, Louis and Fletcher Henderson discs. Gonna add a half dozen more when the more recent Bechet discs arrive.
-
It should be about 14+ Euros (can't get the US$ pricing). Great deal on the Habanero set since I got that elsewhere for about 40% more.

Complete Capitol Recordings Krupa/James
LAL replied to wesbed's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Got this set at a Tower.com discount 6 months back and still haven't opened it. Guess it's time to do so to make sure there are no defective discs. Here's an AMG review of the set. Another one right here at another jazz site. Btw, this set can be obtained from the Amazon marketplace for under $100. -
Fresh Sound is having a 20% sale right now on all their Afro-Cuban titles (Tumbao). Single discs are 7.84 Euros or US$9.32. Box sets are a little cheaper in aggregate. Gonna grab myself some Arsenio Rodriguez and Orquesta Casino de la Playa discs. B-)
-
Yep. All I need now is to get the 2 cd set which contains the albums "Over and Over Again" and "Live at the Roosevelt Grill" to have a complete or at least a comprehensive set of masters/recordings made by Wilbur on Atlantic.
-
If cash is not an issue, then would recommend this set. Great booklet and sound quality, issues the complete Savoy and Dial studio sessions...essential music. Then this one... And the Verve box... B-)
-
Just received ...to fulfill yet more cravings for N.O jazz.
-
Yes. Another big thumbs up for the set. Like the Eddie Lockjaw session a fair bit too.
-
EKE, you may want to check out this online store. May not be the cheapest though. Watch out for their selective daily SOS sale, which has not hit too many titles of late. You may just get a title or two you want even cheaper than the average $16.15 pricing.

Is there a website for Chronological Classics?
LAL replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Have stacks of discs from this label and never even bothered to look at the label spelling. Here's another site with a list of Classics releases by CD number (also a list of Neatworks with track listings). Seems fairly updated. -
Why not the man in your avatar??

The most disgusting thing you've ever eaten
LAL replied to neveronfriday's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Several smallish red ants (by accident) - much more pungent than any wasabi or hot mustard I've ever eaten. Boiled chicken feet & pig intestines. -
Probably in the region of 1600-1700. Would have surpassed 2000 if not for a depreciated currency vis the $US. About 10% of these are still in their plastic wrap. I probably have too many but the want, no, need list keeps growing. :rsly:
