  1. Didn't know they had trading cards for jazz musicians... This site to see the cards.
  2. Harlem 1958 This site to zoom in. Edit: Can't help but burst into laughter everytime I see Diz at the far right.
  3. Not photos or pictures, but some interesting 20+ inch high sculptures (sold at $800+ a piece)
  4. 10 recommended Gateway recordings above = Turned off jazz for a long time, in my case. Mine entry was via the Duke Small Groups vol.2 album, cemented by a compilation of Diz/Bird recordings. I've found that letting people taste a fairly wide variety of jazz recordings is the best way to help them find out what they like - Compilation! It's worked on some friends, most of whom can't stand the early recordings (particularly the audio quality) or free jazz. Middle of the road/straightahead, preferably with some good vocals seems to be what appeals to folks not already into jazz. As for jazz snobs... :rsly: :rsmile:
  5. Only have two Sun Ra albums - Space Is The Place (Impulse) and Jazz in Silhouette. Some good stuff on both discs although I prefer the former. Would explore more Sun Ra albums but for lack of dough and time. Maybe later, after I've recovered from an earlier Mosaic binge.
  6. In no particular order: 1940s JATP Eddie Condon Town Hall Concerts 1969 All Star Tribute to Duke Ellington Louis Armstrong at Symphony Hall Duke at Fargo Miles - Complete Concert '64: My Funny Valentine + Four & More Capt. John Handy - All Aboard
  7. End of the "Roaring 20s" for me but hey its the start of the "Swinging 30s". I do have a few books, a couple of ties and odds and ends that are older. B-)
  8. Trane/Hartman for sure. I also like Strayhorn's heartfelt rendition (vocal) of his own song on the Lush Life album.

    proper reissues

Looks like Proper did have to pay up for some of their material lifted, i.e. from the books on Stuff Smith, "Desert Sands" and "Pure at Heart". From this site: http://www.abar.net/smith.html (The above is all that's mentioned re. Proper)
  10. Just completed listening to the Harry James recordings over the weekend. Nice swinging music, immaculate arrangements and playing. Really liked the 4 songs with Helen Forrest on vocals too.
  11. Agreed. A beautiful rendition by Don Byas on those Vogue sides.
  12. Too many unwrapped discs. Too many discs listened to only once. Too many on the want/must buy list.
  13. Hope that one doesn't go on the running low list for at least a couple of years.
  14. This one's a favourite ... Hot tamales and they're red hot, yes she got'em for sale Hot tamales and they're red hot, yes she got'em for sale I got a girls, say she long and tall She sleeps in the kitchen with her feets in the hall Hot tamales and they're red hot, yes she got'em for sale, I mean Yes, she got'em for sale, yeah Hot tamales and they're red hot, etc etc
  15. Gene Krupa/Harry James Mosaic - disc 7 ~ Starting this set from the last disc. Some nice Ernie Wilkins & Neal Hefti arrangements. The James' band sound a little like the Basie new testament.
  16. This U.S online retailer has a copy. You may want to get it from them. I've been ordering literally every alternate week from these guys (bas***ds!!) for the past 5 months. Price has been upped a bit recently.
  17. This makes for a total of EIGHT unopened Mosaics from three months ago? Surprised to see this thread re surface... Just a point on unopened Mosaics. It seems lately their QC hasn't been as good as usual. I ordered a Select Paul Chambers for a friend, and the booklets were incorrect.. two for disc #2, missing disc booklet #3 Worse though, My Jackie McClean set.. I had single BN discs of this and it was a while before I realised that the mosaic had been sent with two discs #2.. Disc #3 was missing. By the time I contacted Mosaic, it was too late to get a replacement. A funny one from years ago was the Monk Black Lion.. the music was distinctly not Monk.. it turned out that the disc manufacturer had put Mosaic labels on some Erroll Garners ( I think they were Old Savoy recordings.. very bad sound). This had not happened to the whole Monk batch, just part of it.. Obviously Mosaic put it right.. but had I not checked the discs I might have been stuck up in Erroll's room.... Most of the serious errors like the recent Farmer / Golson set get caught and taken care of, but individual packaging errors like above can be overlooked if you don't inspect your sets. I would recommend checking your sets on reciept for errors such as these. Thanks for the warnings PDEE. Looks like I gotta take some time off to check those sets. The only issue I've had so far is with the labelling misprint on disc 5 of the Herman Capitol but a replacement disc was already inserted in the box.
  18. I have a question. I'm not in the U.S but intend to sign up with the BMG Club using a relative's address in the U.S. Question is, are they likely to 'bombard' the relative with promotion pamphlets, CDs etc after delivering the first order? Particularly concerned about the unsolicited CDs. Thanks in advance!
  19. Some lengthy tracks in here but Box has a nice furry feel too.
  20. Based on an online 4 star/crown list, this must be the Kid Thomas/George Lewis Ragtime Stompers disc on GHB. A crown you say? I don't have that one in the collection, yet. Must get it now.
  21. Stopped looking at my 3rd edition for a couple of years and then decided to pick it up again a few months back for no particular reason. Lo and behold, I discovered they have some decent reviews of many N.O revival recordings which AMG totally omits . I find myself referring to the book quite often now. Perhaps I should pick up the latest edition.
  22. Yes but only after I bought a couple of duplicates last year. Now all Classics discs are listed in a notebook which is referred to before making any new purchases. Have all the Duke Neatworks. Didn't really need Vol.1 but got it for the sake of "completeness".

    Ride Red Ride !!!

This disc is highly recommended for his later work and has Hawk in the lineup. ...and the music of Luis Russell's band is just wonderful, uplifted no doubt by Red's playing.
  24. Methinks you need to get the Bird set now to be cured of this oompa malady. :rsly:
