  1. I guess the Kenton Presents and Teddy Wilson Last Chance threads are going to spark a buying frenzy of the said sets in the next few weeks to months.
  2. Count me in as one who enjoys the music on that disc. I initially got it for the Hawk session (wasn't much into Hodges then) but the Hodges sessions have grown on me since.
  3. Been accessing the AMG site and using the search function quite a bit this past week. Runs fine most of the time, and seems to me to be much faster than the initial stages of its revamp.
  4. Another vote for Wes Montgomery. Add also Dizzy Gillespie.
  5. With the passing of quite a few of the older jazz musicians in the past 2-3 years, mine is probably at least 95%.
  6. Mosaic-maniac numero uno now revealed.
  7. Well, I'm ashamed to say I have NO idea who "Kid Thomas" is. Call me an idiot and then please educate me. Kid Thomas Valentine (1896-1987) - Early New Orleans jazz musician, more well-known as a N.O revivalist, and not influenced even a little by Louis Armstrong throughout. He's trumpet playing may not be to many folks' liking but IMO fits in very well with the bands in which he played. There're currently dozens of discs released on which he's either the leader or sideman. Here's a short bio from AMG. This is Charlie DeVore's, a N.O-style jazz musician, summation of Kid Thomas' playing
  8. Voted 2nd last category like almost everyone else. I suspect jazzbo may have them all.
  9. Whether from their tone, rhythm, phrasing etc, these are the musicians I recognise easily (and who always have an impact on me): Alto: Benny Carter and Hodges Tenor: Hawk and Pres Soprano: Sidney Bechet Trumpet: Satch, Kid Thomas (that jabbing trumpet sound-unmistakable) I find it impossible to pick out any of the drummers and bassists (probably haven't been paying enough attention to them).
  10. Right now its the El Tambor de Cuba box set featuring Chano Pozo compositions and recordings. Thanks to a board member for recommending this set.
  11. No worries. If you're now into June Christy's vocals, there're about half a dozen worthy discs on Capitol/EMI to explore. Something Cool is the best to start off with IMO. On this set's June Christy recordings, I'll echo Dr J's comments. But, June Christy nut that I am, I kind of prefer Peggy Lee's small group sessions on this set. The recordings are very 'intimate', as if Peggy were singing right in your hall/room. Peggy's got a beautiful voice, not very strong, but she delivers the songs very well.
  12. Uh oh. Don't let P.D see the term 'Dixieland' else there'll be flying cymbals hereabouts. Haven't got this album but will definitely be getting it since all of the American Music releases I've acquired (mainly the Yellow labels) contain top notch New Orleans jazz.
  13. Definitely worthwhile getting all of the previous and subsequent volumes IMO. One of the greatest Ellington bands, great selection of Ellingtonia/songs and good sound quality. Even the announcements and bond promos make for interesting listening.
  14. "Indigos" perhaps? Not the players but the material/songs covered. I'll definitely get this lot when I get through the dozen and a half of unopened Duke discs. Wonder when Columbia'll reissue "Cosmic Scene: Duke Ellington's Spacemen", that'll be a good one.
  15. In addition to the Clifforb Brown Emarcy, Billie Holiday Columbia, Rollins Prestige, Pres Verve, add: Louis Armstrong - Hot 5s and 7s (JSP & Columbia) Complete JATP 1944 - 49 Duke Ellington - Travelogue Edition Charlie Christian - Genius of Electric Guitar Bud Powell - Complete Verve Eric Dolphy - Complete Prestige And I'd combine the 5 volumes of the Bix Restored series and consider them one big box set.
  16. Not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but Jazzmatazz lists these as potential new Mosaic releases:
  17. From the other side of the pond Petronas Twin Towers. Houses a large shopping complex, office buildings, art gallery and a concert hall (most of the major jazz concerts are held here). Sultan Abdul Samad building - Designed by a British architect 1890s. This must have been taken on a quiet Sunday evening cause the roads are jam packed on working days.
  18. Some copy protected RVGs but since they were selling cheap... Freddie Hubbard - Breaking Point Art Blakey - Buhaina's Delight Dexter Gordan - Dexter Calling Meet Betty Carter & Ray Bryant
  19. Eagerly awaiting the balance of 14 volumes (after 10).
  20. A double dose of JATP and likely the Mosaic is in store for this weekend. RIP
  21. Mosaic should emboss the numbering of the first and last 25 sets in gold ink so as to make them highly desirable to 'collectors'.
  22. I once bought stacks of discs I knew I wouldn't have the time to listen to for up to 1 year, for fear of the internet store (my main source of CDs) going bust. It did, but I just shifted to another net store and still have that fear. So the vicious cycle continues. And then there's Mosaic...
  23. Does anyone own the "Fats Waller Portrait" box sets by the Documents label? How's the sound quality, are the selections close to complete? Each box has 10CDs and a 40 page booklet apparently. Seems like a decent deal at under $50.
  24. You need to build a special cabinet(s) for your Mosaics, which will definitely double and triple the number you have now.
