  1. Just sorted out a big stack of discs over the weekend to make way for yet more new ones and found 5-6 duplicates.
  2. At a Tower Records relocation sale Kenny Dorham - Una Mas Cannonball Adderley - Sophisticated Swing Duke - Live at the Blue Note Hawk - Wrapped Tight, Today and Now

  4. Hot and hazy (pollution!) - not good conditions for outdoor activity.
  5. This makes for a total of EIGHT unopened Mosaics from three months ago? Yes and make that 11 or 12, all from this year - which is why I've stopped ordering, at least until a good part of next year (I hope), when I should have had the chance to listen to the music and read the booklets.
  6. Agreed Wesbed, except for the postage costs. My situation is even worse though. The last 2 Mosaic orders 3 months back contained 4 box sets each and I've not even opened a single one of them. This never happened when I ordered only 1 or 2 sets at a time.
  7. Jackie McLean - Action (RVG) ~ another copy-controlled disc, but since it's one of the cheapest jazz CDs I've come across in the past 5 years and great album to boot...
  8. Great news! but this is the scary part...
  9. One of the greatest tenor sax players to ever walk the earth. My spirits are always uplifted when hearing Pres' music. What better way to spend the coming weekend than listening to the music from his Basie days right up to his Verve recordings.
  10. Many happy returns!! Sounds cliched - but a Wayne Shorter album or two or three in the disc player this evening would be in order.
  11. The Organissimo BB was mentioned in various threads at the AAJ BB, so out of curiosity I dropped by, found it very interesting and informative and decided to sign up and post once in a while.
  12. Just realised I haven't touched any Mosaic's for about 5+ weeks now. Too much of a good thing?
  13. Got the 'They All Had Rhythm' disc recently. Great stuff. About half the songs are by Benny Carter and his orchestra. Not sure why the online store I got it from had it on sale already.
  14. I guess the Kenton Presents and Teddy Wilson Last Chance threads are going to spark a buying frenzy of the said sets in the next few weeks to months.
  15. Count me in as one who enjoys the music on that disc. I initially got it for the Hawk session (wasn't much into Hodges then) but the Hodges sessions have grown on me since.
  16. Been accessing the AMG site and using the search function quite a bit this past week. Runs fine most of the time, and seems to me to be much faster than the initial stages of its revamp.
  17. Another vote for Wes Montgomery. Add also Dizzy Gillespie.
  18. With the passing of quite a few of the older jazz musicians in the past 2-3 years, mine is probably at least 95%.
  19. Mosaic-maniac numero uno now revealed.
  20. Well, I'm ashamed to say I have NO idea who "Kid Thomas" is. Call me an idiot and then please educate me. Kid Thomas Valentine (1896-1987) - Early New Orleans jazz musician, more well-known as a N.O revivalist, and not influenced even a little by Louis Armstrong throughout. He's trumpet playing may not be to many folks' liking but IMO fits in very well with the bands in which he played. There're currently dozens of discs released on which he's either the leader or sideman. Here's a short bio from AMG. This is Charlie DeVore's, a N.O-style jazz musician, summation of Kid Thomas' playing
  21. Voted 2nd last category like almost everyone else. I suspect jazzbo may have them all.
  22. Whether from their tone, rhythm, phrasing etc, these are the musicians I recognise easily (and who always have an impact on me): Alto: Benny Carter and Hodges Tenor: Hawk and Pres Soprano: Sidney Bechet Trumpet: Satch, Kid Thomas (that jabbing trumpet sound-unmistakable) I find it impossible to pick out any of the drummers and bassists (probably haven't been paying enough attention to them).
  23. Right now its the El Tambor de Cuba box set featuring Chano Pozo compositions and recordings. Thanks to a board member for recommending this set.
  24. No worries. If you're now into June Christy's vocals, there're about half a dozen worthy discs on Capitol/EMI to explore. Something Cool is the best to start off with IMO. On this set's June Christy recordings, I'll echo Dr J's comments. But, June Christy nut that I am, I kind of prefer Peggy Lee's small group sessions on this set. The recordings are very 'intimate', as if Peggy were singing right in your hall/room. Peggy's got a beautiful voice, not very strong, but she delivers the songs very well.
  25. Uh oh. Don't let P.D see the term 'Dixieland' else there'll be flying cymbals hereabouts. Haven't got this album but will definitely be getting it since all of the American Music releases I've acquired (mainly the Yellow labels) contain top notch New Orleans jazz.
