  1. Just placed my first order with Dusty Grooves. 3 titles - one each of Pres, Sonny Criss and Lucky Thompson. The cost of shipping is >50% of the price of the CD. But, still a very good deal overall.
  2. What's the opinion on these Jazz At The Philharmonic titles? Which one to start with? ..plus a few more.
  3. I'm filing mine right next to the Basie discs. No reason, just for convenience. Wait, maybe there are a couple of reasons after all.

Hope the following offers some consolation: Pinholes
  5. If you're into classic New Orleans jazz and some 'stomping' music, then there are some very good titles on the label, in particular those Kid Ory ones. Any one of the following albums would give you a good sampling of the music. My personal favourites are the George Lewis Beverly Cavern Sessions, especially vol.1 which has a beautiful version of George's signature song Burgundy Street Blues. Also this one for some piano solos: Luckey & The Lion - Harlem Piano I would mention the Lu Watters and Yerba Buena Jazz Band which has a different style from the New Orleans musicians, but from the few songs I heard, I wasn't too impressed by the playing. Perhaps someone would like to put in a good word for them.
  6. Fantasy binge: Art Farmer - Sextet Joe Henderson - Milestone Years box Mongo Santamaria - At The Village Gate Duke & Billy Strayhorn - Piano Duets/Great Times Duke & Ray Brown - This One's For Blanton Duke - Harlem Wes - Movin' Along A dozen or two more to come.
  7. Just bought 9 OJCs online and 3 from the local store and will be placing an order for 25 OJC/OBC/GoodTime Jazz titles to celebrate the New Year.
  8. Someone please remind me to get these Betty Roche albums in the near future.
  9. Been eyeing this Trane set for 6-7 years. Finally got it.
  10. The Clark Terry albums, especially these ones. (Also available on the Monk Riverside box)
  11. This was just shipped to me a few days back... Add albums by: The Lighthouse All-Stars (The whole lot, except for the compilation, Mexican Passport I believe) Sonny Criss (I'll Catch The Sun, Up Up And Away, Sonny's Dream, This Is Criss) Coleman Hawkins (The whole lot except for In A Mellow Tone, a compilation)
  12. Tie between Jack T and JJ. Voted for JJ on the strength of his excellent Blue Notes.
  13. Would it be safe to say The Living Legends series will be on the chopping block?! Lots of great classic New Orleans and Chicago music therein.
  14. On the Hot 5 & 7 box, quite a few complaints have been made about glue leaking out from the sleeves and getting stuck on the discs. Bird Complete Savoy and Dial Studio set: Not the aesthetics of the box but the storage of discs (what's new?). The cardboard sleeves, with horizontal opening, are made to just fit the CDs to prevent them from rolling out. As a result it takes tremendous effort getting them out. I nearly wanted to cut open the cardboard sleeves to remove the CDs when I first got the set. Resulted in quite a few (minor) scatches on the discs too.
  15. Darn. Go off these BBs for just a day and I miss all these juicy stuff.
  16. Just ordered the Coltrane box last week. Thinking of getting the Monk, Tatum, Art Pepper, Joe Henderson sets and of going broke before the year end...
  17. That's where I got my copy and with a 25% discount too.
  18. Voted the same
  19. Being outside the U.S., no online retailer (except djangos) offers free shipping. Still, for every incremental CD bought the shipping cost per CD decreases, which compels me to keep adding disc after disc in the order to bring down the shipping cost. Then, there're the periodical discounts which seem to always coincide with my CD orders. Needless to say, I always end up buying double or more the quantity of discs I initially set out to buy. I need counselling and maybe rehab.
  20. Last week: Herbie Hancock - VSOP: Live Under The Sky
  21. Chicka Chicka Boom
  22. About a dozen sets left as at Sunday 21st. -_-
  23. Great! Thanks for the links.
