  1. Tie between Jack T and JJ. Voted for JJ on the strength of his excellent Blue Notes.
  2. Would it be safe to say The Living Legends series will be on the chopping block?! Lots of great classic New Orleans and Chicago music therein.
  3. On the Hot 5 & 7 box, quite a few complaints have been made about glue leaking out from the sleeves and getting stuck on the discs. Bird Complete Savoy and Dial Studio set: Not the aesthetics of the box but the storage of discs (what's new?). The cardboard sleeves, with horizontal opening, are made to just fit the CDs to prevent them from rolling out. As a result it takes tremendous effort getting them out. I nearly wanted to cut open the cardboard sleeves to remove the CDs when I first got the set. Resulted in quite a few (minor) scatches on the discs too.
  4. Darn. Go off these BBs for just a day and I miss all these juicy stuff.
  5. Just ordered the Coltrane box last week. Thinking of getting the Monk, Tatum, Art Pepper, Joe Henderson sets and of going broke before the year end...
  6. That's where I got my copy and with a 25% discount too.
  7. Voted the same
  8. Being outside the U.S., no online retailer (except djangos) offers free shipping. Still, for every incremental CD bought the shipping cost per CD decreases, which compels me to keep adding disc after disc in the order to bring down the shipping cost. Then, there're the periodical discounts which seem to always coincide with my CD orders. Needless to say, I always end up buying double or more the quantity of discs I initially set out to buy. I need counselling and maybe rehab.
  9. Last week: Herbie Hancock - VSOP: Live Under The Sky
  10. Chicka Chicka Boom
  11. About a dozen sets left as at Sunday 21st. -_-
  12. Great! Thanks for the links.
  13. Links are gone after the website change. I should have paid heed to Kevin's advice to save the discographies.
  14. It will be in your shopping cart very soon...

Get Alex Hill's "Ain't It Nice"! This CD contains Alex's appearance as a sideman or on his own sessions as leader (duo, hokum trio and band) playing many of his own compositions. His arranging for these groups give the music an extra lift and the version of "The Eel" on which Bud Freeman features is just marvellous. This is essential music for vintage jazz fans, IMO. The companion CD "Keep A Song In Your Soul" features other artists interpreting Alex's compositions and arrangements by him. Beau Koo Jack (Louis and Earl Hines) is one. See here for more on Alex.
  16. Just completed listening to this set. Some great music especially the sessions with the Turrentine brothers. Horace's piano style is generally bluesy and lyrical and in the Booker Ervin sessions showed he is/was just as comfortable in the exploratory mode (whatever that means ). Can't get used to his block chords though, a distinguishing feature that IMO does not add to the music - in fact a little irritating. Agree about the trio sides being repetitive after a while. Ditto for the quartet with Ray Barretto although they're more interesting when Ray is more prominently heard. Overall a very good listening experience and my first of Horace and Stanley Turrentine (time for another Mosaic buy ). Think there is an error in the printing in the booklet. The captions for photos of the last session read 15 March '63, which should have been 15 February '63. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Haven't confirmed this with Mosaic though.
  17. Bought the Miles' Plugged Nickle box a few days ago at a local store. Waited 6 years for this. Hope it's a good 'un as everyone says it is.
  18. Yes Yes much nicer layout and all that but where's the discount button for Organissimo BB members?
  19. Been listening to the Angels & Demons/Nubians album quite a bit of late. Excellent music. Have also just ordered the following albums. - Heliocentric Worlds-Vol.1 - Magic City - Supersonic Jazz - We Travel The Spaceways/Bad & Beautiful Thanks to this thread, think I'll be quadrupling my Sun-Ra 'collection' in very short order.
  20. Never heard the music but seems to me an interesting jazz vocalist. She had a gig in my neck of the woods too and I missed it. See here.
  21. Not E-Bay but Amazon.com marketplace. While browsing for OOP Masters of Jazz sets, found this (and a few others similarly priced): For one CD ??!@

    Kitty Margolis

Okie dokie. Here're some reviews from AAJ which I've just found. Evolution Left Coast Life Heart and Soul: Live In San Francisco Plus there're the reviews on AMG. Still, I still need some convincing on her albums (ok so I'm almost there with Evolution).

    Kitty Margolis

After digging much music of Ella, Billie, Betty Carter, June Christy etc, I'm now ready to move on to contemporary (not necessarily young) vocalists. After some search, the name Kitty Margolis is stirring some interest. AMG rates her as a great talent who can improvise and scat. Are there any fans of this singer out there and what are your comments and/or criticisms? Which album to start with? Her album Evolution, which features Joe Henderson seems very interesting. I've done a search for a thread on her but couldn't find any. Thanks in advance!
