  1. Links are gone after the website change. I should have paid heed to Kevin's advice to save the discographies.
  2. It will be in your shopping cart very soon...

Get Alex Hill's "Ain't It Nice"! This CD contains Alex's appearance as a sideman or on his own sessions as leader (duo, hokum trio and band) playing many of his own compositions. His arranging for these groups give the music an extra lift and the version of "The Eel" on which Bud Freeman features is just marvellous. This is essential music for vintage jazz fans, IMO. The companion CD "Keep A Song In Your Soul" features other artists interpreting Alex's compositions and arrangements by him. Beau Koo Jack (Louis and Earl Hines) is one. See here for more on Alex.
  4. Just completed listening to this set. Some great music especially the sessions with the Turrentine brothers. Horace's piano style is generally bluesy and lyrical and in the Booker Ervin sessions showed he is/was just as comfortable in the exploratory mode (whatever that means ). Can't get used to his block chords though, a distinguishing feature that IMO does not add to the music - in fact a little irritating. Agree about the trio sides being repetitive after a while. Ditto for the quartet with Ray Barretto although they're more interesting when Ray is more prominently heard. Overall a very good listening experience and my first of Horace and Stanley Turrentine (time for another Mosaic buy ). Think there is an error in the printing in the booklet. The captions for photos of the last session read 15 March '63, which should have been 15 February '63. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Haven't confirmed this with Mosaic though.
  5. Bought the Miles' Plugged Nickle box a few days ago at a local store. Waited 6 years for this. Hope it's a good 'un as everyone says it is.
  6. Yes Yes much nicer layout and all that but where's the discount button for Organissimo BB members?
  7. Been listening to the Angels & Demons/Nubians album quite a bit of late. Excellent music. Have also just ordered the following albums. - Heliocentric Worlds-Vol.1 - Magic City - Supersonic Jazz - We Travel The Spaceways/Bad & Beautiful Thanks to this thread, think I'll be quadrupling my Sun-Ra 'collection' in very short order.
  8. Never heard the music but seems to me an interesting jazz vocalist. She had a gig in my neck of the woods too and I missed it. See here.
  9. Not E-Bay but Amazon.com marketplace. While browsing for OOP Masters of Jazz sets, found this (and a few others similarly priced): For one CD ??!@
  10. Horace Parlan disc 1 (trio sessions)

    Kitty Margolis

Okie dokie. Here're some reviews from AAJ which I've just found. Evolution Left Coast Life Heart and Soul: Live In San Francisco Plus there're the reviews on AMG. Still, I still need some convincing on her albums (ok so I'm almost there with Evolution).

    Kitty Margolis

After digging much music of Ella, Billie, Betty Carter, June Christy etc, I'm now ready to move on to contemporary (not necessarily young) vocalists. After some search, the name Kitty Margolis is stirring some interest. AMG rates her as a great talent who can improvise and scat. Are there any fans of this singer out there and what are your comments and/or criticisms? Which album to start with? Her album Evolution, which features Joe Henderson seems very interesting. I've done a search for a thread on her but couldn't find any. Thanks in advance!
  14. 'This year' means for another two months only. Less than 2 months now.
  15. Sunday marathon session: Anita O'Day - discs 2 to 9
  16. Need a similar device that turns off cheapo stereos that give out heavy bass sounds...and car stereos too.
  17. I once got 6 booklets (all the same) in a Chronogical Classics disc. The packaging machine must have gone cranky with this one disc.
  18. This title, third in a series, features "Baby, It's Cold Outside" (duet with Dolly Parton). Yes sir. A couple of old-fashioned jazz singers, Rod and Dolly, sharing the same song. Gack is right. And a bunch of those songs from vols 1 & 2 are repeatedly played like there's no tomorrow on numerous local radio stations . Interrupts my enjoyment of ABBA, Bee Gees et al.
  19. Overseas: Folks not into baseball but into old cartoons may mistake him for Yogi Bear (from initial hearing of the name).
  20. Glossy corporate annual reports have the best smell. :rsly:
  21. The Audience With Betty Carter Another to Art Blakey's A Night At Birdland Duke at Basin Street East '64 Duke - Paris Jazz Concert Duke - In the Uncommon Market Come to think of it, all of Duke's concerts I've heard are favourites, some more than others. B-)
  22. Scary how fast Mosaics are going OOP, especially when the income is not keeping up to speed.
  23. Stray pens and pencils.
  24. Been buying and listening like crazy to dozens of New Orleans ("Revival") albums by George Lewis, Kid Ory, Kid Thomas, Bunk Johnson et al these past 3-4 months. Even though certain songs are repeated to death and the playing is sometimes not top notch, there is a certain element about this music that makes me return to it often. Perhaps it's the predominantly ensemble playing or the rough/raw feel of the music. Still waiting anxiously for 15-20 titles which are way behind their target delivery time.
