  1. Could they be selling stolen items? Has anyone checked with Mosaic if they've had customers complain of non-receipt of orders, expecially those delivered by regular post? Could this be part of a crime/theft racket? And yes, there are a number of legit CD manufacturers in Malaysia who are able to reproduce CDs and box sets down to the finest detail if requested, would not discount that. The nagging question is why do it for items that likely have low sales (e.g. Duke DETS, George Lewis' Ice Cream)?
  2. Gone broke from buying too many J.I.Ps and OJCs.
  3. Only once - Count Basie ghost band last year. The Charles Mingus big band is dropping by my neck of the woods in a few months. Shall I go see them?
  4. Collected the Kenner Star Wars figurines produced soon after the movie(s) were released - still have some but quite a few have gone missing. Also used to collect those wonderful Aussie stamps but the humidity started causing browning on them and that killed my desire to collect/buy any more.
  5. Gerald Wilson disc 1 - some excellent playing by Harold Land, Joe Maini, Richard Groove Holmes and Joe Pass, not forgetting the arrangements.
  6. Great site! Thanks for the link.
  7. Not on Last Chance or Running Low, but the Hank Mobley set seems to have been backordered for quite some time. A friend tried ordering a set about 3 weeks ago but was told this would only be available in 2 weeks. He checked again yesterday and Mosaic said they'll only ship this in 3 weeks. Hope the set's not timed out and this is merely a delay in the printing of the latest batch of Mobleys.
  8. Going to place my fourth order of J.I.Ps now - there goes another stack of dollars.
  9. I notice that some 'contestants' were trying their best to be the worst, ala William Hung. Sorry to say they weren't funny even a bit (Not that William is funny).
  10. August 2001, and I bought the Curtis Fuller set. Actually read about them in Penguin and AMG 4-5 years before that but never bothered to check them out.

    Jazz Oracle

Love the booklet detailing Jack's regular vanishing acts and antics. I actually burst into laughter reading it. But thinking about it further, it appears that Jack led a sad life. Wonder what really happened to him in his later years. The 4 volumes of The Original Indiana Five are excellent too. At their best they were probably right up there with The New Orleans Rhythm Kings, IMO.

    Jazz Oracle

There's a thread each for Hep, Classics, Frog, Timeless etc but doesn't seem to be one for what in my opinion is one of the best if not the best in reissuing hard to find (on CD at least) and obscure vintage jazz/hot dance music. I've been acquiring each item on their catalogue by order of release. Many of the sets have a fair bit of dated vocals, but worth going through just for some gems on the same disc/set - e.g. The Red Heads. The Sam Manning discs are ones I return to regularly for interesting vocal music. What are your favourite Jazz Oracle releases? There's a new one, a 2CD set compiling the best of Lud Gluskin (who?) and band in Europe. This one still carries the John R.T. Davies seal. Wonder how many more there are. Almost forgot, their excellent booklets are chock full of information and photos.
  13. Just received some Earl Hines discs in the mailbox - A Monday Date - At The Village Vanguard - Once Upon A Time
  14. Have those too, and agreed, they sound terrible.
  15. Yikes! This is a temptation to get the Classics discs even though I've the JSP and Columbias. To these ears, the sound is actually very good overall, particularly the more recent releases of material from the mid 40s onwards.
  16. Darn more duplication!!!
  17. CD with the shortest playing time I've come across is Slayer's Haunting The Chapel, at a lengthy 17 minutes. Fortunately, all my jazz CDs have more than 31 minutes of music.

    Overlooked Guitarists

Mary Osbourne - not sure if she's overlooked, but thought I'd list her here anyway.
  19. What have I purchased in just the first 9 days of the year?? 3 1/2 dozen OJCs, 10 Jazz In Paris from the Bards, another dozen or so used CDs of various artists, a couple of Sun Ra,..., contribution to a Tsunami fund,... What I need next to make a superstart to 2005 are a couple of Mosaics sets.
  20. After receiving my first CDs from the Bard, I immediately placed orders for the following (mostly recommendations from this board of course): 37502 Barney Wilen/Alain Gourag -- Jazz In ParisJazz Et Cinema Vol 1Un Temoin Dans La Ville/Jirai Cracher Sur Vos T CD 1 $5.99 $5.99 62756 Bobby Jaspar -- Jazz In Paris Jeux De Quartes CD 1 $4.99 $4.99 62755 Andre Hodeir -- Jazz In Paris Jazz & Jazz CD 1 $4.99 $4.99 37500 Barney Wilen -- Jazz In Paris Jazz Sur Seine CD 1 $5.99 $5.99 38519 Peanuts Holland/Buck Clayton/Charlie Singleton -- Jazz In Paris CD 1 $5.99 $5.99 37501 Mary Lou Williams -- Jazz In Paris I Made You Love Paris CD 1 $5.99 $5.99 Looks like about half the titles are now temporarily out of stock or out of stock. 21. 3 cheers and hip hip hoorays for Mosaic. This is a must have for me.
  22. I lasted a good 12 hours on January 1 before the urge to visit the music store overcame me. Did not return home empty handed.
  23. Buy 1 less CD than this year. I'll reward myself with a Mosaic upon achieving that.
  24. R.I.P Artie Shaw - one of (if not) the greatest jazz clarinetists and big band leaders.
