  1. I ordered only a few items on the oldies.com promotion. Mainly because I had to buy 4 new tires but also because I liked the "stock up" incentives on the original Concord blow out (30+ cds = $2.98/cd) and the recent Concord (buy 10 get 1 free plus that 20% discount code). So at oldies I bought the Stitt box, Swingin with Pee Wee (this is the one I really want) and Geri Allen's Life of a Song SACD.
  2. I placed two orders (June 12 and June 16). They both arrived complete today packaged in the same box including the Gil Evans and Ten, Zoot Sims and the Gershwin Brothers and Kelly Blue SACDs.
  3. Disappointed to hear the Gil Evans and Ten and Zoot and the Gershwin Brothers SACDs are out of stock. Thanks Chuck for advising about the Gil Evans SACD as an upgrade. Actually I didn't have the session at all. So I'll keep a lookout for the original OJC.
  4. I have a similar question about whether to upgrade my OJCs to some of these $5.98 OJC SACDs. I seem to remember that a board member (Claude?) expressed disappointment with the Fantasy SACDs.
  5. Nope. I do the Jumble every morning just to make sure. On the other hand that could mean I'm getting close.
  6. This is the kind of discussion that helps me listen and hear MUCH better. Thanks to all.

    Stan Getz

I can't be too objective about my favorite Stan Getz cd. It's strictly emotional. When my late dad bought himself a cd player I bought him Stan Getz Plays for a father's day gift. He loved it and always kept it in the player even during Christmas holidays. The cover photo is great too. Since he died I can't seem to play it. But Stan Getz Plays is my favorite. Great memories! I have a number of Stan's cds, including Anniversary and Serenity. My wife is not generally a jazz fan but requests Stan Getz when I say I'm going to play some music.
  8. Too many female impersonators perform as Cher. She looks like another one of them.
  9. Thanks HG. I have a whole bunch of the Collectors' Choice Blue Notes and never realized it.
  10. I'm not that familiar with Collector's Choice other than as a retailer. Interestingly the One Step Beyond Blue Note looks just like the Conn. Series cds I own. Only difference is the One Step Beyond cd has "1995 Capitol Records, Inc. Manufactured by Capitol Records"printed on the cd. My 1995 Conns have "Blue Note is a registered trademark of Capitol Records, Inc." in addition to the above. So how can I identify Collector's Choice Blue Notes? I have a few 1987 Blue Note cds that have "1987 Manhattan Records, A division of Capitol Records, Inc" printed on the cd.
  11. My McMaster version has the same problem. The booklet is dated 1987 but the cd is dated 1995. Are we sure Blue Note even manufactured any correct copies? An additional comment on the sound: My McMaster version sounds fine but Ghost Town sounds excellent, superior to the other cuts.
  12. Hilarious! My wife's son recently passed the bar and is working for the state. Thanks for the gift idea.
  13. Jim, Curious to know if the boss gave LTB positive feedback on the data from the O-board.
  14. In the 50's some of the Mad imitators were Whack, Unsane, Bughouse, Crazy, Eh!, and Nuts.* They sound like poor ripoffs too. (*from Completely Mad: A History of the Comic Book and Magazine)
  15. Because Kurtzman's Mad was so popular, there were a lot of imitators. As a result William Gaines hired Al Feldstein to develop a second humor comic called Panic. Al Feldstein eventually replaced Kurtzman as editor of Mad.
  16. It's also interesting to note the influence Kurtzman, Elder, Wood, etc had on Robert Crumb and the underground comics of the 60's. Keep on Truckin'! Kurtzman also started the shortlived satirical magazine Humbug and Playboy's Trump. Trump only lasted two issues.
  17. At those times when I suffer from a kind of listening apathy, I'm almost always pulled out of it by hearing live music. Maybe 15 years ago I saw Nicholas Payton at an outdoor festival. The crowd was politely appreciative until he played one of Armstrong's Hot Fives. Who would like jazz that's nearly 70 years old!? Well the crowd went crazy for the power and fun of that music. The energy of Payton's version translated into a standing ovation. That's when I could finally hear the greatness and relevance of Armstrong come through the filter of those old records.
  18. Because I'm listening to one of her cd's now and she hasn't been mentioned yet.....Bonnie Raitt.
  19. Might as well go for 200. Did it!
  20. Because I read this thread for the first time today, my wife and I are going to have breakfast for dinner tonight!
  21. I'd love to know from Selena Roberts if, after all the accusations ("misunderstanding") by A-Rod, the meeting went well and she's putting it behind her. Who was at the podium controlling the press conference? I found it telling when he said he was picking reporters that regularly covered the Yankees. Is it possible the implication was denying future access if a question was too difficult?
  22. Within Jim and Allen's discussion it's interesting to me that jazz writing/critics could be replaced with jazz music/musicians and the discussion could be practically the same.
  23. He explained the use of steroids was because of the Texas "culture". They demanded performance on the field or something like that. What team doesn't, especially New York teams. So, knowing what his explanation is for starting to use steroids, what is his explanation for stopping steroids ("100% clean") once he became a Yankee where pressure to perform is much more intense?
  24. The quote I saw today had A-Rod apologizing to all the Texas fans. Now he'll deny any subsequent use after Texas. After all, he's believable because he was honest and admitted wrongdoing. Hmmmm.......
