  2. That kind of logic solves an ongoing controversy. Francis Bacon was an author William Shakespeare was an author Therefore, Francis Bacon was William Shakespeare Proof that Shakespeare couldn't have written all those plays.
  3. Hilarious what Jack Benny can do with just a look. My favorite standup comedian.
  4. Actually there's way more coughing in the lobby during intermission of a Keith Jarrett concert.

    Chicago

I've also posted before how Chicago and BS&T lead me to jazz. But this is the song that made me start exploring jazz for the first time.......not the song so much as the tenor break with walking bass that starts around 1:51......
  6. The Civil War of 1812 by Alan Taylor
  7. Quite frankly the facts that are known in this case and, more importantly, what is unknown is making my head spin. The positive part of this thread for me is learning what procedures should be followed if, God forbid, as citizens we are witness to this kind of abuse and assault. Quote from today's paper (forgive me if this 2008 high school complaint has already been discussed but it's new to me): "But a full decade passed before police began another investigation into Sandusky after another mother (in 2008)reported Sandusky's alleged behavior to a {local high school] where Sandusky was a volunteer coach and her son was a freshman. The high school immediately barred Sandusky from school property and reported the behavior to authorities, which led to the investigation and Sandusky's indictment. IT'S STILL UNCLEAR WHOM THE SCHOOL TOLD THAT SANDUSKY HAD BEEN BANNED AND WHY........During most of that time (between 2008 and his indictment in 2011) Sandusky remained active with the Second Mile.....Asked who had been told of Sandusky's 2008 banning, [the high school] issued a statement saying it would be "inappropriate" to comment. 'ALL THE PREDATOR NEEDS FROM US IS SILENCE AND INACTION', said David Clohessy" [the director of SNAP, a network of survivors of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests]. So, according to this report, the high school reported to "authorities" (police or Child Protective Services?)and, after a 3 year investigation, Sandusky was indicted. Even with the high school correctly following procedures, Sandusky, banned from a high school and Penn State facilties, still was allowed to be with kids. In hindsight we know that Sandusky remained a predator. But, in 2008, it was known he was banned from two places and, still, he was allowed full freedoms elsewhere. Something needs to be improved so parents and average citizens can more effectively protect their children besides waiting for the procedures in place to deal with these situations. edited to say ALL CAPS were my emphasis
  8. My wife and I are looking forward to a rare (at least in Northeast Ohio I believe) appearance by Booker T. Jones tomorrow night here in Cleveland.
  9. I hope the Phillies choke on it. Why? What can you have against them? Goodie is pissed because Rollins had the nerve, the nerve, to steal 2nd when the Phillies were up by 6 runs in the top of the 6th in SF last summer. Supposedly there's some unwritten rule that only the SF Giants and their fans know about that says you can't steal when leading by 6 runs in the 6th inning. However, he's okay with a pitcher throwing at a batter's head and sees it as a perfectly acceptable form retaliation just as long as it's a SF pitcher doing the throwing and a non SF played getting beaned. Um. Never said it was OK to throw at anyone. What I said was, Cousins needs to eat dirt each and every time he's at bat vs. the Giants. Retaliation for sliding into Posey head first and off line, is IMO completely justified to plunk the SOB....and it is and has always been a part of the game. Being OK and justified are two entirely different concepts. If it was your guy who got nailed like that you'd be plenty pissed. And what that incident has to do with the no-class Phillies is beyond me. On point: I was pissed that their no-class manager dissed one of the best pitching staffs in the Majors in public. That steal was a total in-your-face show of disrespect for the Giants and the ensuing brawl started by the Philly players was a big bunch of bullshit, too. They got squashed out in the playoffs and justice was served...in spades. Look man, if you're going to get it wrong at least tell it right. If I'm going to get it wrong? Sigh. I knew I was going to regret engaging in a discussion w/ you. Okay look, you obviously need a little reminder so here it goes. The Phillies "no class manager" never "dissed" the Giants pitching staff. A reporter asked Manuel if he thought that Cain and Lincecum were great pitchers. He replied that he thought that they were "very, very, very, good" pitchers but not great. How is that a put down/"diss"?? Furthermore, the Giants manager Bruce Bochy backed up Manuel. "I guess what Charlie's point is, is longevity," Bochy said. "He's right. When you call somebody great, they've done it over quite a few years." The brawl was instigated when the SF pitcher(Ramirez) beaned the Phillies batter(Victorino) with the next pitch and the catcher(Eli Whiteside) tossed his mask and started hopping up and down like a prize fighter at the beginning of a bout. Squashed out of the playoffs? The Phillies lost a 5 game series 3 games to 2 following an epic pitching duel that they lost 1-0. How is that being squashed? Beaten yes, but squashed? No. No. The incident started with a clearly designed in-your-face steal with a six run lead against a team with the worst offense in MLB. It was a no-class play called by a no-class manager who said way more than you are posting regarding the Giants' pitching staff. And so far as I know, the Phillies weren't in the WS, so they were squashed out; note I did not say soundly defeated or whipped. That facts back me up so you can misremember it all you like...just attribute what I actually said and not leave out half of it to make your claim. Fair? Hey Goodspeak- you ever play the game? I have. I pitched- and been on both sides of a lopsided score. Someone steals a base with a 6 run lead- you know how to stop it? Throw the guy out. Better yet- keep runners off the bases- can't steal if you're not on base. It's quite simple. So what if someone disses the pitching staff? Is it true? If not- so what? You beat them on the field. Obviously he hasn't or the "dear boy" would know that there's no crying in baseball.
  10. A real treasure trove. I also love the album covers and photos in the background. Thanks so much.
  11. I missed this thread before. Playing Hues of Blues in Mr. Norris' honor.
  12. Thanks for your post A.A. I ordered this set on the 1st. Still no shipping notification as of this date.
  13. Mr Speak doesn't realize that the tough talk is a cover for thin skin. When he gets poked he doesn't bruise, he bleeds, and Giants blood at that. Um......the bell just went off. Got to get to class.
  14. Who said this?..... "No issues with an in your face stolen base and ensuing brawl with a 6 run lead late [6th inning] in the game? No problem with a classless manager putting down one of the best pitching staffs in the majors either?" "There are few things that give me greater pleasure from watching a team of arrogant bullies LOSE to a WILD CARD team in the playoffs." "So who you gonna steal second with a 6 run lead NOW fucking Phillies? The bastard sons of bitches got what they deserved." "Fuck Philadelphia" Followed by on a later post about the arrogance of Nolan Ryan: "Being a nice guy isn't a part of the employment description"
  15. Very sorry to hear this. I became a fan of Ron Washington during the course of the post season and the WS.
  16. One of my favorite Andy Rooney commentaries was about exaggerated statements in advertising. One of his examples was how, for years, 60 minutes started the show with "those stories and more, next on 60 Minutes". He said, "what do they mean by 'more'....me?" From then on, whenever Andy Rooney was on the show, the introduction was "those stories and Andy Rooney, next on 60 minutes".
  17. Bleen should replace 7. I never liked 7. 7 8 9.
  18. Not sure if he really means a live audience but he seems to be stating the obvious. Music played without anyone else to hear it is just practice. Isn't the record buying public an "audience"?
  19. Some excellent base running by the Rangers in the 9th to get on second and third. Two sacrifice flys win it. Great game!
  20. Great photo. I believe it's Lonnie Johnson (left), you, John Hammond?, and who is on the right? I didn't post in your birthday thread so.....Happy day after your 80th, Chris, and many more! I still remember reading your Stereo Review reviews as a youngster (late 60's, early 70's I believe). Those gave me direction on what recordings to listen to and started a lifelong, consistently rewarding hobby.
  21. Weighing in with Jim's analogy, I believe in that classic Blood, Sweat and Tears' album title Child is Father to the Man. I enjoy seeing (hearing) the development take place. To have the entire range of recordings (Prestige, Blue Note and later)is invaluable.
  22. Nelson Cruz...2 run home run.....15 - 4. These Rangers are absolutely nuts tonight! Congratulations Rangers fans.
  23. Joel Forrester is mentioned near the end of the book, Nica's Dream. The Baroness befriended him and, according to the book, when Monk became quite reclusive, refused to play anymore and didn't leave his bedroom, she invited Forrester among others back to her home to play for Monk. According to Forrester if Monk liked what he played he opened his bedroom door a bit. When he didn't like it he shut his door.
