AND TO THINK THE BEATLES AND THE BEACH BOYS WERE AT THE SHRINE AUDITORIUM THAT NIGHT.......
-
The true test will be if anyone here who actually ordered from this site reports back that they were shipped what they ordered.

Bright, Thanks for the run down on that concert......but I am SO upset that I missed it. I was at Melton's Jazz Fest at Florida Memorial exactly one year ago yesterday. Also had an unbelievable lineup.....Clark Terry, Billy Taylor, Benny Golson, and Mark Whitfield along with Jon Faddis. Got to chat with most of them afterwards and get some autographs. Got there early to watch them rehearse and interact. And this will be my last year living in South Florida. I should have put that date on my calendar. I just plain forgot. For all jazz fans in Florida this annual event shouldn't be missed. And watching the awestruck high school/college musicians listening to these legends was priceless! I think I'll go cry now.

Periodically I've called the customer service number they have listed. Like a couple customer comments on public eye......just got a busy signal. Maybe it's outsourcing problems....but if no one responds I don't comfortable volunteering my cc information. Odd, though, that the Jack Johnson has a $55 price.

I hate to take up more space with my issue......but since I made accusations I need to undue them. Yourmusic's customer service did respond with similar suggestions to Kevin's and couw's. Their responses were very professional. It didn't work on my computer BUT I ordered successfully through a friend's computer. Therefore the problem has to existsomewhere within my computer. I apologized to them for adding to their workload and I apologize for my "blow off steam late at night" posting here.

I can appreciate that other people have successfully used it. But what i find funny is that I seem to have problems with my browser application ONLY at this one website, never at any others. In theory their site couldn't be simpler to use, but I'm blocked at every turn EXCEPT when my credit card information was processed. They got that communique....and they responded with a confirmation. My security settings were the same when I tried to order and send questions as when my credit card information and e-mail address were entered. They got my cc and personal info (no problems with my browser app then evidently)........now they just don't take my orders or see my followup comments. I know you're trying to help and i appreciate it........if it is entirely my fault, which i'm not convinced yet it is (otherwise i couldn't buy from other sites either), then i'll apologize for my rant.

I forgot the appropriate face:

I just had one rotten experience with yourmusic.com. I had way more trouble then necessary in setting my account up because a page saying "please enable your cookies" kept coming up. My "cookies" are, have been, and will be "enabled". Finally my account set up....credit card number in.......i order by hitting the "CART" button. Voila......0 in my cart......I try again and the "please enable your cookies" page AGAIN comes up.....this page btw has the yourmiusic.com heading on it. I respond via their customer service contact page. I hit "submit" and a "you've reached this page in error" page WITH the yourmusic.com heading on it keeps coming up EVERYTIME i try to submit my question/complaint/problem. Now they have my credit card to automatically charge me every month and i cannot order a damn thing because..............they want me to "enable my cookies"!!!???? which have been, will be, and are enabled. I try to cancel my account via THEIR customer service e-mail form and, guess what.......when i hit "submit" the page saying "you've reached this page in error" (with the yourmusic.com heading) AGAIN comes up. They really must enjoy holding on tight to my balls!!! Be wary of who you give your credit card numbers to on the web. I've learned my lesson. And my cc company says i have to send in a written dispute each month to fight the charge. Just ain't worth it!

I used to really dislike "Send in the Clowns" until i heard Carmen McRae sing it in a small club. She sold me!.........Also thought the song with "somebody left the cake out in the rain" was pretty lame (well, it is pretty lame) until I heard Maynard Ferguson's band live..... MacArthur Park I think.

Except on BST 3 there is a song called "Something's Coming On", a Joe Cocker tune I believe. It has a sudden tenor sax/walking bass break that, at the time i thought screwed up the song. But that break is what got me listening to jazz. I still think it sounds good. I also have a soft spot for Chicago Transit Authority (the first album). It blasted me out of my Herb Alpert and the Tijuanu Brass rut.

I've tried to e-mail yourmusic.com via their customer contact page and when i hit the "submit" button i get a page saying "PAGE NOT FOUND.........you've reached a missing, out-of-date, or bad link". This page has the yourmusic.com heading on it. My questions from 4 days ago haven't been answered as if they aren't being sent through. Anyone else have this problem? Is there another way to contact them?

What gets me out of listening ruts is hearing live jazz. Watching the interaction of the musicians, their concentration and effort, completely opens my ears again to the power of the music.

I just tried posting a painting my g/f did for my birthday and also nothing doing. It's a 37.5 jpg file. Frustrating!

Two songs off Partricia Barber's Companion: "The Beat Goes On" followed by "Use Me". Sexy with a capital S!! Bonnie Rait's Nick of Time and Luck of the Draw too.

garth, Your comment on how many of the "west coast" players were tainted reminds me of one of the discs from Shelly Manne & His Men At The Black Hawk where he introduces each member of his "west coast" band being from Boston, New York, and other east coast cities. An obvious slap at the critics who used labels to describe music.

I haven't been following the show closely. But I saw part of this past weeks show. LaToya seemed able to sing softly and quietly very well. That made her stand out to me as opposed to the judges loving the (imo) oversinging of "Summertime" by Fantasia.

The comments on Walter Davis Jr. got me to dig out some long unplayed cds to listen to tomorrow: In Walked Thelonious (solo piano) on Mapleshade; Scorpio Rising, WDJr. Trio (Steeplechase); and Byrd in Hand. Thanks for reminding me of these.

Which period and time do you buy most of your jazz
TedR replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Thanks Jim........I'm not doing half bad! But I haven't thought of Goodwill, Salvation Army, and thrifts in general before. Much of my collection I listen to fondly thinking "I never would have heard this if I hadn't stopped in such and such a place". And as far as never passing by any used shop, I am notorious for being late for invitations to dinner, lunch, etc. I rarely pass by a Borders. Most recently, in a separate mark down display, were 6 Hyperion Label (British) 20th Anniversary Classical cd's for $1 each. You just never know. It's a rush! -

Jim, I'd be interested in some more details of the art of bottom-feeding. Where, how, etc? -
Lon, I absolutely hate Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth or however you spell it. And I can hardly wait to see her on tonight's show.
-
And don't forget my favorite reality show, The Apprentice. You're Fired!

I'm anxiously waiting for anyone's review of Will Hung's new cd, certain to be a big seller at frat houses across the country. A gag gift extraordinaire!

That John Stevens guy kinda resembles someone............just can't put my finger on it.

Herbie Hancock's Chameleon..........can't resist the funk!

Reading deus' first post brings out a couple different subtexts for this subject: 1) selecting the "cornerstones"; and 2) "I think this could be of great help to newcomers". Unle Bill's post fleshed out the subject with "I'm often asked to recommend some albums to students that have no back ground in jazz." So two different but related ideas came up: 1. selections for understanding the history and development of jazz; and 2. selections that might influence students to really like ("feel") the music. I began to feel the music first. The interest to discover the "cornerstones" followed. As a kid I got tired of pop/rock albums that had one song or two songs I liked with the rest being mediocre. Then I realized I loved the horn solos by Chicago, BS&T, and the jams of Santana and Hendrix. They were more substantial. Then I heard Miles on the radio, appreciated his individuality, and my quest started. Began reading, going to concerts, taking courses as an adult hobby. And most recently while reading the old BNBB Lon and many others opened my mind to the greatness of jazz and its players from the 20's, 30's, and 40's. And as a member here my education continues. It's always fun to read a post from an experienced listener who says "I finally got it". Nothing's more satisfying than that! If I was played examples of Armstrong or Ellington before I was ready I may have decided jazz was not for me. To each his own starting point and to each his own pace.
