Miles' Complete Live at the Blackhawk........I have the 20% off Borders coupon from the Borders thread which would take it down to $36 plus tax but I already have the 2 cd Henri Renaud version. But I could sell that and have ALL the music. I don't know. There's just so much out there that I don't have. Hard decision to make......

Bruce Lundvall interview
TedR replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Is hardware bop being played by anyone anymore? -
As usual, Jim, very true. I came to that song and the originators through David Clayton Thomas and BS&T.

Bill, One compilation that was used in a history of jazz class I took in college is The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz. It includes tracks by, among others, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong up through Parker, Monk, Rollins, etc. to Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. Includes big band (Ellington) too. There was an updated cd version. I'd like to think it's still available for use in classes such as yours.

Thanks for the description of the concert, impossible. I'm glad you went to see Elvin. The greats are irreplaceable and to see him in person is unforgettable. I saw Elvin's group in the early 90's (an unknown Nicholas Payton was with him then). He had wonderful charisma and energy with an infectious joy for the music. I feel terrible to hear of his health problems now.

Off Bob Moses' Time Stood Still........."Word from the RA" with Bob Moses' young son doing an adorable funny rap and fooling around with the alto sax.........and on the same cd "Elegant Blue Ghosts" with some hot soloing over funky rhythms followed by a tap dancer! No matter my energy level it gets me playing air drums every time.

The portions produced by Phil Schapp include courtesy flushes.

Thanks for these coupons mrgraham and bebop. On the latest one the small print states 10% only for "electronics". What are electronics at Borders?
-
Janet Jackson, Britney Spears.......can they sing? All I hear is over produced records with electronically enhanced vocals and in person lip-syncing of the same. What a rip off.
-
The Fifth Dimension. I had a huge crush on Marilyn McCoo and loved their versions of Laura Nyro tunes.

That's what makes English so damn hard to learn. Take away one "f" and it's pronounced "ov"; or "I read that red book" .....adding an "a" (a silent "a" at that) makes that much difference in meaning?!; "let's meet and eat some meat"....If I didn't know the language I wouldn't have the patience to learn it.

What are the qualities you dislike the most?
TedR replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I get concerned when I see the word "fake" as a sign of bad character (I don't disagree though). But when I was in the corporate world I believe you had to be somewhat fake to coexist. I certainly could be....i.e. "I couldn't be more enthusiastic about this product"; "nowhere I'd rather be than right here doing this"; etc. Honesty can be a big risk as well as, depending on the situation and your own circumstances, foolhardy. That's the part I couldn't stand, when I had to take on those traits. I hate phoniness too, but most of all, in myself. -
That is amazing. I counted 3 at first too. Then after reading the explanation I carefully counted again and could feel my brain kind of "flip" past the word "of". Very weird feeling. So how many f's in this post?

After reading your posts on CT I realize I have very little CT at all. Silent Tongues and Neferttiti, The Beautiful One has Come, both on LP, are all I have. Checking out other recordings on cd I looked at the Penguin Guide, 3rd edition. One interesting quote: "Unfortunately, the equally fine "Conquistador" has been deleted. Blue Note's recording wasn't ideal for the music but it's good enough." Would like to hear your viewpoints on this opinion.

Because of Chuck's review above of the various Marsh recordings, I dug out my still sealed copy of Intuition and started listening. I was in another part of the house when the first Tristano cut came on. My reaction to what I heard was to exclaim "wow" and get back in front of the speakers to really listen. Interestingly enough, the name of the track was "Wow". I'm also stunned how good these 1949 recordings sound. Thanks Chuck for getting me off my duff to listen to this gem.

John Tesh. I saw him on some show trying to rock. He came off as a real dork.
-
I have Warne Out on vinyl too. My copy says Interplay Records. I've been w/o a turntable for far too long. I can't imagine Collectables doing justice to this recording on cd.

You made the point I was going to make Adam, except regarding the Pullen/Adams. I was disappointed that Mosaic is filling out this select with the Pullen trio to make 3 cds. I have the Pullen trios already. I would have preferred they stick to the Pullen/Adams group making a less expensive 2 cd set (unless there were some additional live recordings of that group of course).

Fructose Sweetener Linked to Obesity Rise
TedR replied to 7/4's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The other dangerous ingredient in convenience foods is the high levels of sodium. Obesity from high fructose corn syrup and high blood pressure from high sodium content......imo federal regulations are needed to control what the food industry is doing. -
JSngry: "I organize mine by smell": Anyone familiar with Harvey Pekar's American Splendor comic book? The movie of the same name was just released on dvd. Anyway, one comic book episode has him struggling to sell part of his 8,000 or so LPs because his wife is complaining about the lack of space. His cat pees on one of his valuable Charlie Parker albums. As a result he takes it, among others, to a used vinyl place where the clerk behind the desk tells him that (paraphrasing here) "records that smell like cat piss just don't sell well here".
-
Don't forget Curb Your Enthusiasm. I have cable, but no premium channels. I'll be collecting all these episodes on dvd.
-
A more recent favorite quote: Rooster Ties: "Yeah, that would suck."
-
Jon Stewart to WM: So there is trash talking in jazz?!
-
Wesbed, I know my favorite quote isn't in the spirit that you intended this thread. I have been reading, learning from, and admiring many wonderful, thought provoking posts here much before I became a member, not the least being Jim's. But I have to include the one that makes me laugh out loud every time I think about it. (I still haven't learned how to copy others posts yet.) From aric: "i mean hell though all i was sayin dude was anyone who complains about fidelity on a bootleged tape from gerrys apartment in 1951 is asking for the beat down".
