COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Kevin Bresnahan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My 30 year old daughter just called to tell me that the husband of her best friend from high school is still debilitated from COVID-19 that he first contracted in March. He's now developed cardiac issues and the doctors are worried about the blood flow in his lungs. He's having trouble walking and often can't get himself out of bed. All of this from a "simple flu". It's "like a cold" . It "only affects the elderly" . It "only affects people with pre-existing conditions". It is "not a big deal". I wish those quotes were made up and people really weren't that stupid and heartless. -
They were "bathroom reading material" for many years.

Where can I find Mosaic Vinyl Box Sets?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to brednjam1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I didn't say they sounded bad. I just think that someone that has the CD version needn't go crazy if they want all analog vinyl. I don't think it's worth the premium over the CD versions. This is why I still haven't bought a vinyl version of the Horace Parlan set yet. When I find one for a decent price, sure I'll pick it up. -
I upgraded my PC speakers to Klipsch R-41PM monitors. I don't know about "audiophile", but they sound a lot better to my ears than the PC speakers that came with a recent Dell PC purchase. I should've done this a while ago but until I was forced to sit and listen to them for hours, it wasn't a priority.

This is a great set. I saw that band live several times and this 2 CD set really captures what I heard.

But I've been told that the Princeton Record Exchange prices on the high side. As for the original poster, bemoaning the lack of reasonably-priced mint condition vinyl would seem to indicate that you are new to this game. Welcome to many years of frustration. Since you missed the old days of waiting years and years for your local record shop to get in certain records in any condition, you might not realize how much many of us long-time record buyers love Discogs. I'll also add that the sets in your list with QLP in the description, were cut from the same digital master as the CD set, so if you buy one of them, you're simply playing back the music on your CD set with a needle. -
This is what Claire told me: "This CD was on my old website and I hand drew the covers, but the guy who produced my first 2 cds (Donald Elfman) listened to it and offered to put it out."
-
Claire told me that it was issued on her private label but I never did see it. She said it was only available via her website for a short time. I'm glad someone asked her if he could give it a proper release as it will give me the chance to hear it for myself. I have enjoyed many of her previous recordings, including the ones she did with Joel Forrester's People Like Us.

I was at the Regattabar in Cambridge, MA to see Marcus and Byard play as a duet shortly after this disc was issued. The whole of Harvard Square, where the Regattaber is located, lost power, so, for about 45 minutes, Jaki sat out in the lobby chatting with us as we waited for the power to come back on. Eventually, they had to cancel the show. Jaki was murdered a very short time later.

Artists who got overlooked during the CD reissue heyday
Kevin Bresnahan replied to duaneiac's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I thought that I read somewhere that the Muse catalog was a mess because of an ugly "business divorce" that somehow divided up the catalog? -
I preordered a copy through Claire. Looking forward to hearing it.

I thought one of the problems with the Argo/Cadet catalog was the lack of masters? Many (all?) of the Argo/Cadet sessions that have been released on CD don't have great sound. I've also noticed that on the few releases I do have from these labels, there is often a lack of personnel listed. Maybe the label just wasn't kept in a good enough condition to allow the owner to mine it properly? You can't reissue what you don't know you have. -
What a great life. I can only imagine at the stories he could tell. I never did get a chance to see a show at his club during my many trips to Chicago. I saw a show at the Green Mill once but never Joe's place. I hope he left it to someone who will continue on so that I do get a chance to go there one time.

It's funny you say that as it's exactly what I did. I found Fielder's "Plays the Music of Pepper Adams" and "Each Time I think of You" on Amazon so I grabbed them.

what are you drinking right now?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I haven't drank that in many years but when I did, it was always very good. A little sweet but not candied like a Spatlese or Auslese. -
Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!

I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure that Jordi will put it out soon. Andorran copyright is still only 25 years. -

2014 & 2015 vertical of Beran Zinfandel. I didn't realize that the Wagner (Caymus) family had released a straight Zin to the general public until today. I have had their own Caymus Zin on trips to wine country and I always hoped to be able to buy it in a store. I saw this in the store with a little shelf talker that said "Caymus Family". I'm glad I saw that. -
$9.99 to ship a $9.99 CD! Ouch. I think I'll pass. Maybe... but it's only available as a digital download. I'm not a huge fan of that. Maybe it's time I change my attitude on this?

LF: Mosaic Larry Young box set
Kevin Bresnahan replied to pglbook's topic in Offering and Looking For...
That $90 box set on discogs doesn't sound too bad and the seller has good feedback. COVID-19 is delaying a lot of things so I would give the seller the benefit of doubt here. If you're worried about the box hinge being ripped, don't. Those box hinges used to fail all the time. You could pay $140 for one with an intact hinge and it could fail on you the third time you flipped it open. Then you'd have the same condition box for an extra $50. I was glad when Mosaic got rid of those hinges, particularly with LP sets. That hinge was almost guaranteed to fail on heavy LP sets. I've toyed with idea of using a razor to cut off all of my hinges so that when they do fail, they won't rip the boxes. -
I am always surprised when someone says that they like this date. It has never been a favorite of mine. I actually think it's pretty boring. I'm spinning it right now in fact and... nope. I just think it sounds sloppy.

Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!
Kevin Bresnahan replied to EKE BBB's topic in New Releases
There is one eBay seller from Japan offering the SHM CD version but their feedback is pretty bad, with several complaints that they accepted orders without any stock to ship. I assume that is the case here too. -

The problem I have here is that I got a tracking number, not just a dispatch notice. A tracking number should mean that the item is on its way. I've never had an item cancelled and refunded to me after it left the building. Clearly, if I ever find myself ordering from them in the future, I will not trust that an item has shipped when I get a tracking number. The cynical side of me believes that Chalkys realized that they had some valuable stock sitting on their loading dock so they pulled them off the shipping shelf and cancelled the orders so they can sell them later at a big profit. The more logical side of me thinks that maybe UMI got hold of them and forced them to pull the stuff back. I'll never know what happened but I don't think it was handled well at all. I actually wouldn't have minded a straight-up cancellation compared to the way they handled this. -

I got TWO shipping dispatch notices - one with a tracking number - and yet today I received a cancellation notice. Pretty shoddy. Has anyone ordered the SHM CD from Japan? I've seen a few Japanese listings but I don't want to waste my time trying to get a refund from a Japanese seller if they do not have these in stock.
