  1. I always thought Twin Peaks was just weird. I could never get really into it. I watched it but I stopped after a bit. Given its short life, I imagine that I wasn't the only one. I mean, really, WTF? This was during the days of VCRs and I remember playing that scene back many times. I never did figure out what the hell it was ll about. Double WTF...
  2. Yes it is! I have that on a Camden Deluxe two-fer called "Highest Mountain": https://www.discogs.com/Clifford-Jordan-Highest-Mountain/release/4046245 Oh shit, this two-fer has "The Adventurer" on it too! Excellent. I have this in digital so I don't have to buy that crappy 32Jazz CD. Thanks for getting me to check this again. Now playing - Mickey Tucker - Mister Mysterious (Muse).
  3. May 10, 2019 A STATEMENT FROM THE JAZZ FOUNDATION RE: KENNY BURRELL GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN The Jazz Foundation has received many inquiries over the past 24 hours regarding the legitimacy of the GoFundMe campaign for Kenny Burrell. We would like to assure anyone concerned about Kenny that this campaign was indeed created by Katherine on his behalf. Musicians close to Kenny have been in touch with him directly to confirm his situation, and the Jazz Foundation has been in contact with Katherine for months. We operate with the utmost respect for client privacy and confidentiality, but given the questions that have come up, Katherine has kindly given us permission to share this information. Kenny and Katherine had been dealing with this situation alone for several years, because, as always, musicians are proud and self-reliant and do things on their own. They did not even contact us to ask for help but were referred by friends. The Jazz Foundation assessed the case, conferred with other helping organizations, and reviewed documents attesting to the financial need described in the GoFundMe post. We couldn't possibly cover the full scope of the need, and other sources of funding were explored, including a GoFundMe campaign, given how successful and lifesaving they have proven for fellow musicians. As we can see in this outpouring of love for Kenny and Katherine, it has worked. This is a painful but inspiring example of what we see every day at the Jazz Foundation. Many of our legends do not have a partner at home to help them. As we see here, even when they do, the Jazz Foundation is needed to give emotional and financial support. This is why the organization exists, and we handle 30 emergency cases every day. Katherine wished to share these words with everyone who has given their kindness and support over the last day: “Thank you to everyone at the Jazz Foundation and those who have responded with loving thoughts, prayers, and generosity. Kenny and I are overwhelmed by the compassion, support, and love of both friends and people whom we do not know, but revere his music. Even simple acts of caring and prayer are deeply appreciated during this difficult time, but the generosity in others’ hearts is far beyond anything we could have imagined. The outpouring of love and support, as well as the words of admiration and respect he has received through the campaign have tremendously lifted his spirit and touched his heart. It is my greatest joy to see his expressions, including tears, as he realizes he is respected, cherished, and loved beyond his comprehension. It is a deeply moving and humbling experience, challenging though it may be to expose ourselves and ask for help. Our deepest and heartfelt gratitude for your support, love, and light." We applaud Kenny and Katherine for the courage it took to share the details of their crisis. It has opened up a world of such goodness and generosity, which they so richly deserve. 4. I donated. It's the least I can do for someone who has given me many hours of enjoyment.
  5. And now, what is turning out to be a wonderful LP so far - Clifford Jordan - The Adventurer (Muse). Tommy Flanagan, Bill Lee & Grady Tate. Killer band. I missed this when 32Jazz put it out with their usual stellar artwork. Do I really have to buy this ugly-looking CD... sigh.
  6. It's just the feel of this particular record. It sounds like something Johnny's band would be playing coming out of a break. It just has that "70's Jazz" sound. Again, not a bad thing, but it's a thing still. I mean there's some 70's/80's Jazz that sounds like the Bob Newhart intro. There's some that sounds like the Love Boat theme. This ain't that. Next up, Robin Kenyatta - Beggars and Stealers (Muse). Produced by my friend Michael Cuscuna. No Jim - this does not sound like something the Carson band would play. Ha ha ha.
  7. Mickey Tucker - The Crawl (Muse). Jazz from this era sometimes reminds me of the Johnny Carson Show's music. This LP is one of those times. This is not a bad thing, but it isn't great thing either. Junior Cook is still Junior Cook and that's a very good thing.
  8. Yup, mono it is! Thanks for making me check. I never would have thought of that. I just saw the stereo banner wrapped over the top and figured it was mistake by the person pasting on the cover.
  9. Michael Cuscuna is looking into this and he has a call into Blue Note/Universal to see if they can do anything financially. He said that the Jazz Foundation is already involved too. I told him the Jazz Foundation should give the Burrells a lawyer to sue the bank that's telling them "Tough crap that somebody stole $60,000".
  10. Apparently no one here has heard Miley Cyrus' recording "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz", where she is backed by the Flaming Lips. Free on Spotify: No twerking involved.
  11. They increased the copyright protection to 70 years starting with recordings made after January 1, 1963, which just so happens to be right before the Beatles hit the scene. Funny fact - they missed the fact that the Beatles released a 45 rpm single before their cutoff date, so "Love Me Do” and its B-Side, “P.S. I Love You", are in the public domain in the EU. As such, a couple of PD labels have issued them on compilations. https://consequenceofsound.net/2013/01/anyone-in-europe-can-now-sell-the-beatles-love-me-do/
  12. It's too bad that no one ever figured out if the titles for several of the tunes on "No Room For Squares"/"Straight No Filter" were mixed up when they were filed at the Library of Congress. I found this thread where we talked about it.
  13. I thought all of Hendrix's performance has already been released? What 2 tunes are his family asking to omit?
  14. Add "in the US" to your post about Mickey Mouse and add "in the EU whenever the Beatles are about to slip into the public domain" and you've got it right.
  15. A lot of the older Japanese Blue Note CDs did have a sound signature. Michael Cuscuna used to joke that they had a special "hiss generator" that they used to soften the sound of their CDs. I don't know what it was, but I have always loved the sound of those old TOCJ CDs. Others have disagreed with me there and that's fine. I have the version of "Third Season' with the bonus track and I think it sounds pretty good. Malcolm Addey has done some great mastering work in the past, so I am not worried about the sound of this new Mobley box. Excellent!
  16. I wonder if Mosaic knows about that bonus track? Maybe someone should remind them. It would suck if they forgot.
  17. I'll have to spin it again to see. I didn't notice the first time as I sit pretty much dead center in front of the speakers so mono/stereo can get lost a bit.
  18. I know it's not "tonight", but later this month, there are 2 great looking shows coming to Boston's Scullers Jazz Club. May 30th - Carl Allen Quarter with Vincent Herring on alto & soprano saxophone, Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Yasushi Nakamura on bass & Allen on drums. May 31st - The Incredible Harold Mabern Trio (unfortunately, "Incredible" is not being properly advertised) with Mabern, John Webber on bass & Joe Farnsworth on drums. I am very excited to see both of these shows.
  19. Lester Young, Roy Eldridge & Harry Edison - Laughin' To Keep From Cryin' (Verve/Classic Records) Stereo
  20. Now playing: Chuck Wayne - Morning Mist (Prestige) - original VAN GELDER blue label pressing. Wayne on guitar with Joe Williams on bass and Ronny Bedford on drums. On my copy, the cover wrap is shifted upwards and the "STEREO STEREO STEREO STEREO STEREO" banner is wrapped over the top of the back of the jacket.
  21. Just finishing up, the Classic Records version of: It sounds very good. I feel it sounds a little better than my old "two eye" stereo LP.
  22. I don't know that I like this... It's like weird Monk or a cross between Monk and Cecil Taylor.
  23. Seems like it might be exclusive to Canada: https://www.thestar.com/life/food_wine/advice/2019/01/28/toro-bravo-the-new-spanish-red-under-8-is-sold-outfor-now.html
  24. My favorite Merlots from California are Shafer, Pride Mountain and A. Rafanelli, whose Merlot is only available at their winery in Sonoma. I like Rombauer's Merlot as well but it's over $40 these days, which is getting up there. Recently, I visited Sonoma & Napa wine country and became a wine club member at Lambert Bridge. Their Merlot was superb but it was also $65, so it really should be superb. If you get a chance, go check out Lambert Bridge. Great wines. Their single estate Chardonnay was one of the best Chardonnays I've ever sipped.
