  1. Belden once told me that "Black Dahlia" was meant to be heard in surround sound. He spent many hours on those mixes. He was really getting into surround sound right before he died. He saw it as a great way to get his music into the hands of people who would otherwise never listen to it.

  3. It looks like he's a writer for Wired magazine: https://www.c-span.org/video/?513056-5/washington-journal-gilad-edelman-discusses-section-230-communications-decency-act
  4. Back in the late 80's, I got to know a jazz record collector who worked at a record store in Northampton, MA. He had a huge collection that included a bunch of rare Blue Notes. He told me that he had never seen an original of "True Blue".
  5. Jackie McLean - Hipnosis (Blue Note). The Moncur session. I needle-dropped this to mp3 years ago so I could listen at work on my PC. I hear this and can't help but wonder why it didn't come out when it was recorded. About the only thing I can think is that the cymbal sound is not quite right in spots. Really "phase-y" sounding, even on the Mosaic Select CD.
  6. Looks like a nice player. Half price is a good deal. Back when I did audio comparisons, I never really heard CD player differences. I heard mastering differences from CD to CD, but I can't remember a player making a certain CD sound good in one player and worse in another. I did use certain CDs to compare speakers though. I would just recommend using some favorites and see how they sound. You should have a few CDs that you know every note - for me it would CDs like "Kind of Blue", "Blue Train" or "Soul Station". I would use something like this.
  7. I picked up a Toshiba pressing from Stereo Jack's many years ago. Great session. The slow blues tune, "Phil T. McNasty's Blues" is my favorite track.
  8. My favorite Transition date is the Doug Watkins.
  9. Joe Harley knows that the master tape for "The Jody Grind" is a needle drop. I discussed it at length with him and Michael Cuscuna via E-mail. However, he did not say that this would preclude it from being reissued on LP, just that it might not be good enough for a Tone Poet (premium) reissue. The Japanese CD reissue program has released 2 alternate takes of "Blue Train" and one of "Lazy Bird" but they only clock in at ~25 minutes. Maybe they will release these on a 2nd LP?
  10. I was in a small produce market in Kittery, ME over the weekend and they were playing "Cousin Mary" from "Giant Steps" over the speaker system throughout the store.
  11. I've lost track of how many musicians have said that to me. In a few cases, it was close to the truth though.
  12. Well, after 6 days of negative tests, I assume I avoided it again. Hopefully this run will continue.
  13. Listening to disc 1 ("The Digital World") now. I get what she is trying to convey but not a big fan of it so far (on track 3). The packaging, while very nice looking, was not very well assembled. Both CD sleeves as well as the booklet were glued into the pockets. The CDs came out OK but I had to literally rip the booklet out. Luckily, most of the torn cardboard was inside the pocket and not the booklet.
  14. I am going to wait to hear a sound sample until I buy. If it's in good sound, I'm in. Bootleg quality - nah.
  15. On Record Store Day (4/23/2022), Reel To Reel is releasing a live recording of Pepper Adams with the Tommy Banks Trio titled "Live at Room at the Top". Blurb here: https://recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/14738 Only 1000 copies being pressed and I am not standing in those asinine RSD lines so I guess I'll have to see if any are left TDARSD (the day after Record Store Day) or wait for the CD release. Does anyone know if the CD release will have more material?
  16. I can't get my 2nd booster until May. You are still supposed to wait 6 months after the last one, right?
  17. Some bullshit? Only some?? I somehow mange to see a lot more than you then. Avoid the hardware discussions if you want to keep your sanity. There are some real loonies in that forum.
  18. Working from home today as my boss informed me that he tested positive yesterday and we had met yesterday afternoon for a bit in his office without masks albeit at a good distance (~8 feet). Tested negative today. Hopefully negative tomorrow too. I was supposed to meet a friend I haven't seen in almost 3 years due to Covid and now we had to cancel. He flies back to CA Friday. Covid still sucks.
  19. I pre-ordered Ben Allison's latest, "Moments Inside" on vinyl. Ben is an interesting player and on this one, he's gone to the mellow side. From the samples, it sounds like a good combination.
  20. If it bothers you, I have been told that these releases have not been licensed so they are technically bootlegs. If I see the music on a Amazon Prime or YouTube, I'll give it a listen, but they aren't getting any of my money.
  21. Curtis Counce - You get more bounce with Curtis Counce! (Contemporary/Analogue Productions). I've managed to pick up a few of these 33 rpm Analogue Productions LPs over the years and they have all sounded really good. This one is no exception. Nice mellow date.
  22. Spinning this one again. It's just OK. The funk tune 'Aurora' with the whacka-whacka guitar and electric bass remind me a bit of Sly & the Family Stone.
  23. I finally got around to ordering this. I got an e-mail from Artist Share about another artist and thought, "Shit... I never got around to ordering that Maria Schneider disc"!
  24. Herb Ellis - softly... but with that feeling (Verve). I have this on a 1981 Japanese pressing. Ellis with Victor Feldman on vibes, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Ronnie Zito on drums. I haven't spun this in a while. Polite jazz. I'll have to spin something a little more lively after this to wake up.
  25. In listening to this record, I was reminded of the many times I managed to see/hear George live. It also reminded me that as great of a tenor player George was/is, that circular breathing thing, which shows up a couple of times on this record, is kinda boring. It was really cool the first time I saw/heard it but by the 2nd or 3rd time, I was more like "eh". He basically does the same thing with it every time. No matter, it doesn't ruin this record at all and George does play his ass off. Higgins is pretty good too.
