  2. Obviously John Peel was an British phenomenon , but I can't imagine that he'd have shaped my musical world if I'd heard him. Not saying that to be snarky - just an observation.

  9. It's been 90ish, humid and dry for the past week to ten days. Cooled off today and we're supposed to get some rain (finally). The forecast is 75-80 for the next week. I'm ready for that.

  12. A little while ago, when the Yankees played the Red Sox, Jackie Bradley Jr. was hitting about .150 and didn't look like he belonged in the major leagues. Now he looks like one of the best hitters in baseball. One of the Yankee announcers spoke to Chili Davis, the Sox batting coach, and he said that he had Bradley Jr. make an adjustment to his swing. Whatever happened, It's been an amazing turnaround and Bradley Jr. has become an exciting young player who's fun to watch.
  13. Clifford Jarvis was one underrated drummer.
  14. I thought that I'd be put off by seeing Holmes and Watson in a truly contemporary setting, but I've enjoyed this series - some of the best television these days. And interesting that at the end of the last episode Holmes seems to have become nearly as psychotic as Moriarty. I'm waiting to see where that goes.

    Ran Blake

To my ears, Ran Blake mines a small area very deeply. When I'm in the right place, his music moves me deeply.
  20. Perry Como: "Till the End of Time" - a song I can't ever remember hearing before now.
  21. Marion Brown/Elliott Schwartz: Soundways (Bowdoin College Music Press)
  22. Joe Gordon: Lookin' Good! (Contemporary)
  23. This may be relevant or not, but I'll throw it in. From Joachim E. Berendt's liner notes of Cecil Taylor's Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly!: "And the evening before the record date, we sat together in the beautiful home of MPS boss H.G. Brunner-Schwer, the first thing he (Cecil) wanted to listen to was Friedrich Gulda playing a piano concerto by Mozart. The records he chose to take along were Johann Sebastian Bach's 'Well Tempered Piano', The Singers Unlimited: 'A capella 3', and Supersax playing Charlie Parker's music." I've learned over the years not to be surprised about anything connected with Cecil. He's a man of surprises.
