Maybe "Workin'" and "Walkin'" are someone's James and Jones. . . . I've preordered Walkin' from cduniverse; love this album.

I've missed all these, but of course I'll take YOUR word for it because I trust your ears and likes! Ray's work has long impressed me and it's a shame he's not a better known and more lauded performer. His touch and his energy and his swing. . . ah. . . he can bring such joy.

I agree that Malcolm has made what must be great sounding masters sing. Also, though I haven't been wallowing in this set for a while (and due to my personal situation away from home for hopefully only a few more months won't be grabbing it out and revisiting it) but I like this set just fine. You're right, "fun" is a big element in the listening and I have to believe the creation of these sides. I've been able to watch an old 25 minute or so TV show that showcased Gerald Wilson's Orchestra and to watch him directing the band reinforces this. He's intent and he's very detail concious and getting all he can out of the band, but his very posture and gestures and expressions show that this is what he LOVES to do, and all the band members are responding with an eagerness and attention that lets you know they're also digging themselve big time. There is another thread around here but the search function hasn't been working for me and my iBook lately so I'll just agree that we could talk about this set again.

Cool, nice that you knabbed another one! I agree entirely about Episodes in Color, and I bet there are other instances in this work. I think there's another possibility at work. . . the sort of "electric Miles" phenomenum. In my opinion some of the persons involved in putting together Miles' electric albums, and his live shows, played at a level or at least specifically in a manner that they didn't elsewhere. Not really the same exact sort of fusing as is going on in Monday's machinations, but the new situation they faced of making Miles' vision come to reality under his direction seemed to incubate some babolicious playing that was some of their best work (again in my opinion). In part a responsibility may lie in the charisma or "Yoda"-ship of the leader. Certainly many of these cats responded to Miles' personality and presence with challenged playing and inspired thinking. Perhaps Monday has the same leadership going on. SHE knows the elements that she draws from and stirs them in the bowl and perhaps these cats are just swept along with the strokes of her mixing paddle. I would not be surprised also to discover that both Miles and Monday had/have personal "presences" that are exciting and motivating.

Yes, pretty darned good stuff, isn't it. PEE WEE! I have it on vinyl for many years. YES ! It is pretty darned good. I'm curious about the 4 extra tracks, although there is no doubt in my mind I'll dig them. You will be diggin' them! I've had these on vinyl, but they're much better sounding here (vinyl not the best).

Search function is not working at all for me these days. . . so I'll ask: anyone listening tot he Joe Gallant (some of them are "and the Illuminati") interpretations of Dead material? I've been enjoying "Terrapin" a lot. Sort of a bass-directed big band . . . Fuses lots of jazz and rock and blues. I've ordered two others, Blues for Allah, and a cd of tunes from a number of albums/shows.

Montg, thanks for the note about the Lockjaw, I added it to my Miles and Etta order.

Hey that looks pretty good! (I still say you are da man John!) Maybe by 2015 we'll have a cd reissue! -
Oh you're going to like George on these sides. Also Hank and Stan!

I bet you feel like singing that pop song "Don't You Wish Your Listening Room were Great Like Mine!"

I agree, those are EXCELLENT reissues. Can't wait for the final two! -
Isn't it obvious? Jane Fielding and Terry Morel were both mentioned in the same review from allmusic. And both Terry Morel and Marilyn Moore had albums on Bethlehem! So that's the painfully obvious connection! Not only that but if you have four Margaritas from Jorge's in you, and either say or read "Terry Morel" really fast. . . it can read or sound somewhat like "Marilyn Moore". . . That's interesting about that other Marilyn Moore record appearance because on "Moody" she is definitely wearing Billie Holiday on her sleeve and everywhere!

I'm hoping to get mine today; it arrived at home in Austin some time ago, and my friend Dave mailed it to me Saturday. All items arrived, including a HEP cd I ordered, the Whiteman "Swing Unit" . . . . -

jazzbo does not have or need an aol handle name. Again, I repeat, no "prize" necessary. I had fun searching for it and reading the odd bit about Scientology, a fascinating read of this weird outfit. -
That's what I love about audiophile gear ; you spend a fortune , to make manifest , recording flaws that weren't previously apparent Diminishing Returns On the balance in my opinion my system has been worth what I've put into it in time and money. I miss it every day here. A lot of stuff sounds fantastic, best I've ever heard. Not McMaster stuff though. I work at it with speaker placement and using resistors on my tweeters (designed to be flexible that way) and they can sound decent. B
