  1. Rereading some Rex Stout, right now "Too Many Cooks."

    who's jane fielding?

Do you really think this is a "winner"?Her slavish copying of Billie Holiday really unnerves me. Nice backup but. . . .
  3. It is a McMaster; I really can't comment on the "sound quality." Usually McMasters bother me endlessly on my main home system. This system makes all cds sound about the same as far as that goes, pretty decent sounding, Bose's "proprietary digital technology" sort of homogenizes all sounds, iTunes isn't as anally revealing as my other sources.
  4. Personally I think it's great. I've enjoyed the album for a long time, but this is even better as it's "expanded." Some nice grooves and some more "complicated" playings too. It really has been hitting the spot for me lately. I've finally got some speakers for my lap top to make life easier for me here in temporary lodgings in Houston (bought the Bose "Companion 2"s and love them) and this cd has already made three complete circuits in my iTunes/iBook this weekend. . . .
  5. Christy/Lee, Christy portion. Listened to that this morning (via iTunes on my iBook), early this morning, and it was so soothing.
  6. Evan, I've seen her releases on the Buck labels and wondered. But. . . there are still so many twenties and thirties bands that I have been exploring that I haven't gone much into contemporary groups doing that sort of thing. . . . As you are into it, that gives them a big prop and makes them more imortant. . . .I'll try to sample something sometime soon. (I've other things to take care of lately).
  7. More like Maigret than that bizaaro world copy, Clouseau!
  8. I'm listening to a solo of his right now on "Alive! at the Village Gate". . . what a master he was!
  9. The search was it's own reward; no prize for me please. I don't know why she may have been banned. My guess is that when the old man passed away she didn't see eye to eye with co-inheritors/"church" controllers. Believe me, being hot is not UBIK--doesn't save you from all ills. And it probably was a favor they did her.
  10. I think Bird liked this saxophone, as Ornette liked his; they seemed to enjoy playing it. I read that Bird's was given to him sort as a promotional deal. I researched Bird and Graftons a few years ago and read among other things that for legal reasons he was not supposed to play it publicly within the US and so he is most often viewed with it in Candada and Sweden. . . .
  11. Offer him the limited edition lp facimile version.
  12. Yeah, I love "204 Blues" on this one; "Pretty Strange" is something else as well.
  13. I think the appropriate term is "painfully obvious."
  14. That's Taylor Hicks, who bested Katharine to be the American Idol. I actually lke Taylor Hicks. He has Ray Charles deep down in him.
  15. She would be shocked to read what we write. . . .
  16. I LIKE IT! Thanks for posting it.
  17. Hmmm. . . for me it's Relaxes. . . and it's got the edge because of Cyrille, who I am not always crazy about. Go figure. And excellent Carter as well. Who I am not always crazy about.
  18. Many many more happy ones!
  19. It could be not very good. . . and still be better than the Yadeon cd!
  20. I have to believe that the recent problems between the record comapny and the estate are as important to any delay or cancelation as BMG's reissue ideas. . . . I love these boxes to see the development of the music. I've bought boots of much of the material that later comes out officially; I'm always eager to buy the official version. This will be case with the material in the On the Corner and Beyond proposed set. I'm not that crazy about Bobby's OR Freddie's work actually, but I do support the work of some contemporary artists as well as more Miles and Monk et al.
  21. Admittedly, I've never heard the K2 release. I long ago stopped falling for the "remaster" hustle. In most instances, the original LP is best, and all the CD upgrades are just trying to get back to that. If your original LP is the mono version, it should be ok. In this case it is not just a question of different remastering of the same tapes. The K2 CD comes from the mono tapes, which used different microphone positions than the stereo recording. To me, the stereo version sounds odd, very distant and diffuse, whereas the mono recording sounds as immediate and dynamic as one is used to with Riverside recordings (both mono and stereo). In my view the mono recording should be the standard version, but it's the stereo recording that gets reissued all the time (OJC CD, Riverside set, SACD, now the new set). I recommend everyone to get the K2 CD while it's still around. I'm pretty sure that my regular OJC ( pre ZXY- German issue) release is mono and not stereo. I like both the mono and stereo takes. The most recent release of the stereo tape on SACD sounds pretty good to me. I like this sort of recessed sound fine. I know. . . I'm different.
  22. True. I have that one. But: I think they sound will be better on this release. And I think very few people have ever seen the Yadeon cd. I've only ever seen two copies in total in all my Miles scourings since the late eighties.
  23. You're welcome. I sort of have a comfort food addiction to electric Miles. It was the first music that really excited me and 'fit' when I returned from Africa as a seventeen year old, and I've just had an affection and geniune need for it ever since.
  24. Right. U.S. only. One perk for us. But then again, look at the government administration we have to suffer with.
