Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
jazzbo replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
June Christy/Peggy Lee, Peggy Lee sides -
If I met her it'd be more like Barney Fife than anything. . . .
-
I can see it now: Jim gets to meet Monday. He breaks into song. . . "God bless YOU. . . You make me feel BRAND NEW!"
-
Alright! One of my favorites of his. . . very . . . mellow and uplifting. Purely beautiful.

The code of the jungle seems to be "we want the good looking ones and we're going to take them!" Weird plot where mother nature had a laugh by putting all the good looking women in one village with rather ordinary looking men, and all the good looking men in another village at the other end of the land with rather ordinary looking women. Once the grass on the other side of the fence is spotted, all's fair in war!

Sorry, yes, Solid State. I got it confused with another.

DRG is releasing this month (tomorrow maybe? maybe already out?) one of the greatest of the Jobims, never before released except briefly in Brazil, now called "The Unknown Antonio Carlos Jobim." http://www.drgrecords.com/details.asp?PID=31611 Fantastic stuff from that band with Paulo and Ana Jobim, the Morelenbaums, Maucha Adnet, Danilo Caymmi, etc. Now available on iTunes.

I watched a weird "B" movie on a really cheap dvd (two moves on one dvd for ONE dollar!) and at the end the credits said one of the actresses was Adrianne Barbeau. . . must have been one of her first movies. Total "guy" stupid entertainment movie with camp-ometer on 11. Oddly enough it had a pretty cool soundtrack in parts reminiscent of fifties Sun Ra.

Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Etc. Jazz & Other Concerts
jazzbo replied to kh1958's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Hey, glad you had fun. I wish I liked Bill Frisell. Try as I might I just don't enjoy his playing! I wouldn't have been able to say "hi" anyway. . . I've been in Houston on and off since March and nonstop since May 1 and probably nonstop through the middle of August. -
Your biggest (gasp) Mosiac order?
jazzbo replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
My biggest one was a long time ago. . . at one point the Quebec and Green and McLean and a few others were all going into "Running Low" and they sent out a little booklet of "endangered sets" and I think I ordered all of them at once. It cleaned out my then meager bank account and my wife wasn't happy when she discovered it but she got over it. That "getting over it" paved the way for my eventual fiscal insanity in the next decade. . . . -
I think what keeps me coming back to her is the laughter, the happiness I hear in her music. Man oh man. Anxiety and gloom suck. Take that from me. "With hope I just want to live." "In life I just want to give." (from "Play it by Ear", version on Recollections). Right now I HAVE to echo those feelings. If not my present situation would crush me. I'm learning to play it by ear. Thanks Monday. As she says, "Peace."

Well, I must say that I DO find things to enjoy on repeated listening, elements and details that didn't jump out at me at first. I love the fact that it's not this or that entirely. . . it's something else from this and that. . . .That's how it hits me. Listening to "Jazz Brat" right now. Really like the bossa nova elements of "Scat Attack."
-
Well there you go!
-
I think that Chuck was speaking of the sales pitch hype in the announcement. . . . And/or the "plan."
-
Oh yeah! (I haven't gotten the new versions yet, have old ones). Both are great, but . . . Cannon puts that one over the edge for me. More and I more I love that guy.

Complete Dinah Washington on Mercury / Question
jazzbo replied to kulu se mama's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I paid varying prices for these volumes over the years. I love these sets. Some more than others of course, but. . . man. . .what a singer! -
Man, I wish I had those Phil Napolean sides here right now. . . they would be perfect mood bolsterers. Hey, If I find I don't like these earlier sides more than I like later AEC, I'll probably give the set to one of my single friends so he can use it to play for all those hot young babes that just love AEC!

Thanks Ray!

I must have been getting some of those mental messages. . . . Maybe I got one meant for Dick Cheny or something. . . . I had a dream about Dormammu a few nights ago. It was creepy.

I'm tryin' but Disconforme is unhelpful. Offering the CD for 10.95 Euro then, when you hit checkout, you're redirected to Jazzmessengers.com, who are charging 11.95! The buggers! Are Jazzmessengers.com an American firm? If so, they'll hit me with big postage bills, too. MG No, jazzmessengers.com is a Spanish site I believe. . . it's European at least, not American.

Dusty Groove has it. Someone buy it and give a report and make us all jealous!

What happened to those Selects?
jazzbo replied to Edlock8718's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I see it that way, too... and I love the quartet, but still... if I listen to a Tyner solo as such, even in the context of the quartet and the overall great music, I often find nothing much in it that I like... the Garrison accompaniment is good, felt bass, sure, but the solos are totally off of the rest of the music, they don't have anything to do with what follows, just the poor guy who couldn't play loud enough needed to get his share of solo space, too, so he does his flamenco thing... true, when I heard one of those long intros for the first time, I was impressed, but it's just too much of the same for my ears by now... So back on topic: if "Cosmos" is that good and I also still miss "Expansions", I might eventually get the Select... Well, I just differ I guess. I like what McCoy does in the Quartet, especially some live spots, and I like him IN the Quartet a lot more than outside the quartet. And Garrison. . . he anchors that whole band, he's a huge centrifuge that keeps it all spinning but not flying apart, amazing talent in the Quartet and out. And there's much in those solos if you ask me, at least I hear quite a bit in the way he constructs them. I sincerely think that Trane knew EXACTLY what he wanted and he had it in these cats and Elveen. Without one of these ingredients, it wouldn't have been the same, and I've no complaints. -

BLASPHEMER! I don't agree about Tyner and Garrison in the Quartet, but you've the right to feel that way. I think they were necessary ingredients in the Trane stew, and their flavor was just the thing.l I like the "Cosmos" session best of the Tyners and have all the others on cd release so I too would rather see a single release!
