  1. Well, I'm a Mosaic loving person. I feel they present a quality product, and that they do have a consistent format and structure to their releases. At this time I think they serve beginning collectors more than seasoned ones in a number of ways. Seasoned collectors will likely have a nice mixed media collection of one of the artists Mosaic may tie into a nice cd packet. A new collector can get all these in one whack with little to no duplication; a seasoned collector will weigh the cost of a set against the fact that a lot of the material already exists in his collection and play the speculation game as to whether what is remaining may appear on the parent label as a single release. . . .That can be a hard process for us old fart collectors to go through unscathed. Although I can see P.D.'s point better expressed elsewhere that Mosaic may be releasing material that is not quite the jazziest or the very best of an artist, I do think a lot of this is based on personal opinion (and a lot of the selected artists to feature are based on personal opinion of the producers I'd wager) and looks different to a collector with one decade or less under their belt than the collector with two or three or more. . . . Anyway, I've really been excited about the direction into the music of the thirties and forties that Mosaic has taken, and those are the only sets I have preordered in the last few years or bought immediately!
  2. At least you got an email! I've emailed them links to the former discussion on this board, some reviews etc. and gotten . . . nothin'!
  3. I knew that, was just qualifying my post. Sounding like Janis is not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion. B. B. King sometimes sounds like Aaron Thibeaux Walker to me. Not a bad thing. Love them both to pieces! But I agree it shouldn't be used just to be dismissive as I think it has been.
  4. I'm not disputing her abilities at all, just noting that when I did hear her there was a definite Joplinesque sound to her, maybe that comes out in live appearances and not on the lp? It was the way she embellished the responses in a "Call and Response" exchange that made me think of Janis, with that sort of "oh ooh whoa" whirl going.
  5. Yes, I think they did a great job with that album, and it's a nice cd. Let us know if you hear any specifics from them. They changed the format of their website, but I didn't see any new information. . . .
  6. I know the girl with the tattoos. . . and I know the girl with the piercings. . . but I'm not sure I know the girl with the tattoos AND the piercings. But say hello to her from me, just in case. . . Thanks!
  7. The best thing about it is how amazingly Led plays guitar lefthanded!
  8. Jewelcase. . . there may be a newer one but I didn't get it.
  9. I don't get it either as these are magnificent sessions. Not to mention the fact that it constantly amazes me how great they sound and they were recorded with ONE microphone! Truly careful and thoughtful engineering; the balance of sound and tone is wonderful!
  10. Alright! Just got a copy of the RCA France cd, cuz my Koch one skips badly!
  11. Probably. The Impulse series I have seen lately from Japan has been lp tracks only, nothing extra.
  12. I saw her perform a duet on a reallllllyyyyyy bad really bad Motown tv tribute. She did fairly well, reminding me of Janis Joplin, though I had to close my eyes to really be reminded of Janis!
  13. I try not to drink caffeine after 1:00 pm or so. But lately a love of chai, hot or cold, has made me have a glass or cup before dinner. And I sometimes pay for that with a restless night. . . .
  14. It was an early Japanese RVG cd. I like it better too, but really like True Blue as well.
  15. Hey I can understand that. . . . I don't have mine any longer, sold it to get the Monoblocks from the same builder that I now have that have about twice the power. .. five watts per channel! Sound almost the same, but drive the Decware Radial speakers better. I spent a lot but man I love the sound, and just when I got this system dialed in I inherited a Bang and Olufsen from my wife's aunt and now have a great living room system as well (which is totally different!)
  16. Those September 13, 1956 sides are probably from/recorded around the Hoagy Carmichael sessions. . . . Hoagy Carmichael (voc), Don Fagerquist, Ray Linn, Jimmy Zito (tp), Harry Klee (fl), Art Pepper (as), Mort Friedman (ts), Marty Berman (bs), Jimmy Rowles (p), Al Hendrickson (g), Joe Mondragon (B), Nick Fatool (dms) 13 September 1956 - Forum Theater, Hollywood * WINTER MOON PJ-1223 CP-32 5365 * ROCKIN' CHAIR PJ-1223 CP-32 5365 * SKYLARK PJ-1223 CP-32 5365 * BALLAD IN BLUE PJ-1223 CP-32 5365

Yes, anohter XRCD. . . .Good news I suppose. . . . My wallet is used to being empty.
  18. Not easy to listen to at all, I'll not deny that, and I can sure understand living without it. But I like to hear it now and then (and will bring it out again soon as the stereo is sounding great these days and that HELPS believe it or not). Man, Pharoah. . . it's just the energy that he unleashes, the feeling in his sound just washes into me and it's very catharctic! That's the main thing I have this one for. . . Pharoah and the cleansing!
  19. Can't wait to hear how happy you'll be once you get your amp Tony! Yes, I think that the simplification of the DAC that your Audio Note espouses (as does my modified Sony universal player from Decware to an extent) makes for great sonic enjoyment!
  20. My dad is pretty hip, thanks to mine and more importantly my jazz loving and trumpet playing youngest brother (who has been around the nest longest) leading him to some new directions. Of course it was his love of Gershwin and swing (and a few odd Ellington lps) when we were youngsters that are responsible for some of our tastes. My brother has recently gotten him interested in Jobim's music and somehow I feel that this recording by Schneider will be one that he plays a lot. . . I'm eager find out! I continue to wallow in the beauty of this release.
  21. I like it, a lot. Didn't expect to like it as much as I do. I'd recommend it, especially at that price (it has never been EXPENSIVE, but that's a good price!)
  22. hockman is right: audiophilia is a dangerous disease to contract. However, I find that judicious choice of equipment yields great enjoyment with music, and I have LITERALLY been spending what some spend on a car payment on stereo equipment and music (and going without a car) for nearly a decade now and my life is richer for it. I find it makes even the worst privately recorded live gigs sound a little better and the best masterings and recordings sound fantastic. I don't listen to just the good sounding discs, I don't own "Jazz at the Pawnshop" in any form! Hey, I've bought instruments too, so I'm attacking it from another angle as well. I respect everyone's viewpoint here in this thread. I'm stuck with mine, happily.

Personally, I don't have a problem with Steve Ellington's playing, but his ride cymbal's sound and its place in the mix distracts me (not in a good way) immensely! It's not at its worst on this recording, which is a good one. I don't mind Byrd here. . . I'm less of a Hubbard fan than many so I'm happy with Byrd.
  24. I have Feelin' the Spirit now ONLY in the JRVG, which sounds good (when you reverse the polarity!) so I'm eager for this RVG with the extra tracks!
  25. I have a few that are "XX" (they were promotional in nature, they weren't numbered sets). A poster here helped me immensely by pointing out that I could consider those "Number 20"!
